I think "Good Love" would have been a nice addition to Lovesexy...perhaps in place of "Dance On",which I've never been crazy about.

I guess the reason I see them as part of this period is because the first Outtake cassette I got was The Platinum bootleg which was a mix of I'll Do anything and Gold era stuff.. So to me they are one and the same but always good to have a counter opinion on them.
I think Exodus would make a great double disc is because at the end of the first cd you could have had the Seque "to find out what happens to our heros" Would have given it a real 2 part comic book feel, Also it would have let all the songs go full length without the criminal editing to Hallucination Rain (although before I knew it was edited I loved it anyway)

Maybe Glam Slam + Good Love = too much of the same thing (ecstatic romance) on a 45mn album? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I see what u mean: habit make us feel some stuff belonging together. I mean I was listening to Crystal Ball (the album) today and I caught myself thinking of this thread and thinking "if I wasn't used to it I may find the notion of having "It" and "Slow Love" on the same album very disturbing The thing is that basically (IMHO) the I'll Do ANything tracks have a jazzy, broadway-like and somewhat cinematic feeling to them, + they're not very personal since they were composed for movie characters to sing (save Empty Room which was recycled). On the other hand the Gold/Come stuff, despite being overproduced in some ways, sound somewhat rough and agressive, and most if not all songs have very personal lyrics. The I'll Do Anything tracks were perfect for TVOF4S, that whole album's concept was kind of "Prince goes Donald fagen" and I happen to love it, but for totally different reasons than TGE/Come. You have a good point with Exodus. It could have been a true funk extravaganza. Let's hope one day P remasters it and makes some sort of a cohesive companion album with the outtakes (instead of a mere compilation of outtakes mixed with remixes and b-sides on the same CD's). The first 2 configurations of Exodus have leaked 2 years back, try and get them if you haven't already A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

The songs on Batman are,for the most part, very 'loud' and busy. There's alot going on in these songs,production-wise."I Love U In Me" is a very 'quiet',stripped down ballad.I think it would have sounded out of place on this project.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
In a way they're very much stripped-down and minimalist (the songs on Batman). A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

"It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" is not a "so so" track, for fuck's sake.

I should add that the use of the word "fuck" was necessary in this case.

That song never did much for me.Would have preferred a great studio track instead.Imagine if "Wonderful Ass" appeared in its place?

Bearing in mind Witness and Train remain unreleased, either would have sat perfectly on SOTT. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

I've always gotten the impression that people who say they don't like "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" had never listened to any jazz-funk type of music prior to hearing it, so its free form structure and all those changes went over a lot of people's heads. Once you decide that you "don't like" something that doesn't usually change.
For its own genre it's a landmark recording, especially the time period considered. I don't personally consider "Wonderful Ass" to be anywhere near its league.

Half agree with this one. She's Always in My Hair definitely should've been on ATWIAD but no, no, no, not in place of Tamborine (LOVE that song). I would say instead of Temptation. THEN that album would be flawless.

I have always loved Its Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. It totally belongs on that album. Although I like the thought of adding Joy in Repetition to SOTT...hmm....maybe in place of Slow Love? Or Hot Thing?

It's crazy how much of Prince's very best work hasn't been released. Hundalasiliah!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah, I agree. Somewhere on the first disc and on that side. He could have also made it fit the album by just trimming down the other songs a bit.

Replacing one of Prince's strongest album ender, and also sort of him making a point of the fact that he could do more than mainstream pop music by a pop song, no matter how good? No way! Honestly I think ATWIAD is perfect the way it is but if one sond shoulda been replaced by SAIMH it should then have been Amercia: replace a pop song by another, don't touch the odd tracks such as Tamborine or Temptation, which are just so necessary to the album's whole structure. You guys tend to want to replace the songs u don't like by the songs u like but u totally forget the whole cohesive structure of the albums. It's like replacing IGBABN by JIR on SOTTas mentionned by another orger here: just imagine the album ending with 3 goddamn ballads: The Cross/JIR/Adore: boring to death no matter how good the songs individually! I'm not too fond of "Temptation",either but it serves its purpose as a closing track for the album.
"Tamborine"? it just seems like a little filler track with silly lyrics."She's Always In My Hair" is pop perfection and would have worked really well on the album.

No,I listen to alot of jazz funk I'm not saying the song is terrible,I just feel that a kickass studio track (instead of a live track from a year earlier) would have been preferable (to me)...especailly considering all the amazing tracks that Prince was creating during that period.I think "Wonderful Ass" is a great song...classic 80s Prince, imo. I agree.I listen to alot of these unreleased songs and it almost makes me mad that it wasn't officially released I wanted the world to hear some of these gems

OMG...me too...that ending completely ruins the song for me. I've hated it since day one and never warmed to it...I can say that about only a few Prince songs. I have had the album since it came out in 85 and always stop it after The Ladder.
My playlist now includes 4 The Tears in Your Eyes in its place, then all the b-sides, 12" of RB and Pop Life, and live video version of America. Its one of my fave playlists that I have ever made.

Exactly. It opens up the album's mood by putting in a live party track. [Edited 11/13/13 15:03pm] My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
