if you have the sacrifice of victor video, you can hear, at the end of Peach, what became Chaos and Disorder. it's the same riff/groove and everythang. so that was 1993 - so maybe all the way back then.
by the way, i think Chaos and Disorder was Prince's best 90's album.

It was recorded pretty late in the first half of the 90's,
during a 7 day holiday or something. The NPG had some time off and everyone was supposed to be chilling when Prince called them up and told them to come down and record the album, see how fast they could put it together. So my guess is that they probably recorded 5 or 6 tracks in a few days and than the thing was fleshed out with a few other things here and there, like Zanalee which had been floating around for a bit and stuff like that. I think it dates from after The Undertaker and even from after some of the songs recorded for Emancipation, even though that was released later that same year. The exact recording date is in some interview from 1995 or 1996, I can't remember. BorisFishpaw is bound to know though, he usually had all the facts straight, whereas I tend to babble a lot and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

P has always been a master at writing great pop - Rasp. Beret, Take Me With U, TMBGITW, etc. C&D, I lIke It There rock like nobody's business and then the second half has songs that are a bit more structured like i Will and In To The Light - ahh, Rosie Gaines is on it. that alone is worth the price of admission. The Same December and Right The Wrong are so grand they seem to heavy to comprehend. Prince has never relased anything like those two songs ever. anyway, that's just my opinion. hey at least it wasn't a paycheck album like RAVE was.

i had chaos on just yesterday.
it got some really shitty reviews but i think it is superb. This is the Rolling Stone review; On the back of the CD booklet is a disclaimer by The Artist Formerly Known As Prince:'Originally intended 4 private use only, this compilation serves as the last original material recorded by 4 Warner Brothers Records.' His ongoing war of protest and whining against his record label is also reflected in the photos adorning the pages of the Chaos and Disorder booklet:a syringe with a dollar bill rolled up inside,a toilet with a heart floating in the water, and the master-tape vault inside Paisley Park Studio, framed by gold records. Before you hear a single note, you're prepped for a halfhearted transaction from a self-pitying celebrity. The whole album-its vibe, purpose and effect-is summarised in the self-aggrandising 'I Rock Therefore I Am'.Elements from the proverbial kitchen sink-blaring horns, funky, stuttering drums, police sirens,rap-cum reggae style toasting-bracket defiant lyrics that flash hints of social commentary to mask what is essentially 's taunting of his record company. The lyrics gracelessly confuse the personal with the political. Chaos and Disorder is distinguished by its confusion;even the title admits that the album's fractured parts never resolve into a thematic whole.Ai it's best, the record sounds like a collection of polished demos.More often, though,it seems like the work of a Prince impersonator-someone who has closely studied the star's moves and mannerisms but has nothing new or substantial of his own to say. It's a drag act that becomes a drag real quickly. sings the delicate 'Dinner With Delores' in a high register, his lead vocals backed by a breezy, softly cooed chorus.Yet the result is still a less attractive twin of Sign O The Times's 'The ballad of Dorothy Parker'. The title track has a searing organ,Rosie Gaines's fiery backing vocals and wild drumming that suits 's manic blasts of lead guitar. It's wildly energetic-but also generic. Whether he's just distracted by his record-company battles or has truly shot his wad,it's been a while since has really had anything important to say in his music. It doesnt matter what The Artist Formerly Known As Prince calls himself,Chaos and Disorder is the sound of a man repeating himself badly. as written by Ernest Hardy. that was a bit feckin harsh.. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Wow. That was a horrible review.
And compare that to some of the really positive reviews the album got (and there were some). I love Chaos because it was the most raw, demo-like album since Dirty Mind. Those raw, demo-like albums just fuckin' rock!
