Live Prince adlibs that come 2 mind... He is of course a great improviser and ad libs in all manners of ways live through his instruments, his vocal range , dancing..He is very instinctive.
But he is also quite talky at shows.So what ad libs stick out that Prince has said or done on stage?
I am listening to an oudoor paris show from few years back.He is doing a breakdown on musicology and he and Shelby are at Front of stage near crown, he tells Shelby to go back 2 the top ' Come on shelby ' and she obviously does haha. But he pretends to follow then stays down front and does a cheeky grin and gestures to audience he playin a trick.Then he sings
Shelby used to be a friend of mine, now i just take my time .;
Shelby is heard to say ' I'm still your friend ' Then Prince says ' Shelby , Its alright you can come back
Funny but also quite telling, i bet he does have that ' they used to be a friend of mine ' attitude then seee yaa.

i think "eric, shut the fuck up" and "get your cell phones and call somebody, we gettin funky" arent really ad libs, they were said many times on tour, so i consider them rehearsed. the one that comes to my mind is the most recent one i can remember. that was at the october 3 paisley gig. Before "Nothing compares 2 u" he did "An Honest Man" (i didnt see it reported in ANY setlists btw). now this is not the version on Crystal Ball, theres a ton of lyrics. After one lyric about finding a good woman, a girl hollered out something to Prince and he quickly replied "Not you baby, you crazy!"There's tons of thoses around. This thread should be boppin. | |

During the CELEBRATION shows he spotted a guy not dancing during a funky song. He stopped the band with "On the one" and asked why he wasn't dancing... Then he asked his name, the guy's name was Tuna. Prince didn't miss a beat, he just said "Tuna?? ...Tuna??? Well Tuna you best gets funky or we'll have to put you back in the can!" Then counted the band back in. Very quick. “Tuna, you better do something or else we gonna have to put you back in the can!” | |
