What is Prince's 'holy grail' - in your opinion..?

To me Prince "holy grail" is those magic albums from mostly the 1980s.

By "holy grail" I mean the masterpiece albums to which I WON'T ACCEPT any criticism, won't accept any negativity.. because the music is so bloody fan-tastic.

Here's my list of the most sublime Prince music, what is the "holy grail" to me:

Dirty Mind,
Controversy,
1999,
Purple Rain,
Around The World In A Day,
Parade,
Sign "☮" The Times,
The Black Album,
Lovesexy,
Come,
The Gold Experience.

Those are the "grail" to me, 11 studio albums, beautiful and wonderful music, and it hurts me whenever fans here are critisizing these albums.

Now tell what is your "holy grail" in Prince world.. question

Studio albums..? Or maybe bootleg recordings..? Or what else...?

Yet you're quick to slag off albums that don't fit in your particular era. If you can't take it, don't give it.
I WON'T ACCEPT...hilarious!

My favourite movie is JAWS. I WON'T ACCEPT any criticism or negativity of that movie or it's wonderful film making. It hurts me (yes ME! Personally!) when people say how fake the shark looks. Because the film is so FANGtastic!*

Maybe i'm crazy.

Sooo...What eleven things are your singular 'Holy Grail'?

What dozen or so films float your boat? and fuck you if they don't all match mine!

*should have gone with Dracula.

^ this thread is a reaction to the thread "Parade is only half decent", which is unbelievable, Parade is to me as holy as the grail itself... wink

robert aka bob:

why don't you tell which albums (or maybe dvd's, boots ), that you find sublime.

sorry for my bad english, but lets show a little love right?

The run of albums from 1999 to Lovesexy is unrivalled by any artist for me. Too many live boots to mention them all but the Parade rehearsal springs to mind, along with New Morning 87 (wasn't my faith!), he was really digging the Miles Davis vibe.
Irresistible Bitch/ Possessed from Syracuse...MF is on fire!
But I suppose the Holy Grail has to be Purple Rain, lyrically it's his zenith of image creating. The emotions he's invoking with just those two words is genius, the epitome of Prince's mindset he explored during the apocalypse celebration of 1999.
I think that he was so creative during this period that he kinda burned himself out, psychologically. Maybe the Simplicity of the Nude Tour concept was a way of him giving his brain a well-earned rest?

er

The whole myth about The Holy Grail is that it's lost, isn't it? So the Holy Grail of Prince music would be his best album that never was.
And that must be the original 3 LP version of Crystal Ball.

Yeah, I looked at "holy grail" as the album/song/video/whatever that DOES exist but was never released...and that nobody has been able to find.

Or... We could see the "Holy Grail" as recordings we know exist, but are not circulating. Looking at it from that perspective, it would be his sessions with Joni Mitchell or Miles Davis.
This is a good question, as long as it doesn't turn into a "what's your favorite album" thread.

Didn't he recently mention 10 completed cds that were ready to go?

And then there is Crystal Ball 2.

That's what a Holy Grail really is, sometning you desire to find rather than already have.

The Thread should have been named what are Prince's Sacred albums.

My Holy Grail is the Full version of Cosmic Day.

Knowing Prince, his "holy grail" is probably the actual Holy Grail

I think you mean sacred cow (something that is holy and shouldn't be mocked, questioned or criticized) not holy grail (something hard to obtain and almost mythical in it's elusiveness).

Yes, This is actually the meaning to me, too!

.

Then, mine would be the planned 12" of "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (Extended Version)"

.

Prost!

I guess the holy grail of Prince's career would probably be Wally, although seeing as it was erased and no longer exists it's not so much hard to obtain, as it is impossible.
