Ha, and this is why I will continue to support the bootleggers.Prince is bootlegging himself and selling it instead of pro-shot soundboard stuff he has and can control. He still getting paid for shitty service. No thanks Prince. The fans put much more effort in it than you do!!!!

I cannot argue that Prince's business methods keep the bootleggers in existence. At least, with respect to live recordings.

But, can you name me any artist who has driven bootleggers completely off the face of the Earth? None come to my mind. I guess Pearl Jam tried to do that a few years ago, when they made every single concert of their tour available for purchase.

I do not know how that turned out, though.

They still do. At the Pearl Jam official site you can order 'bootlegs' from every show. I do think it makes it less interesting for others bootleggers. It's great if you've been to a show and you can get a good live recording from the band.

But Pearl Jam is very good to their fans in general

Thanks. I wonder what their penetration rate is for each show? How many people that attended a show would buy it? And at what price?

Just wondering, not asking you. I think this is interesting.

They offer the bootlegs digital or as an cd, digitals are 10 bucks and cd's 17 bucks. I bought 2 bootlegs in the past of shows that I didn't even attend.

I think it works for them, since they've been doing it for years. Their official website is very 'fan friendly' in general. How they handle it, they keep a lot of control of their output in a way that fans appreciate

Just checked out Pearl Jam's bootlegs. Yep - years of shows there! All the way back to 2003, which I guess is when they started this?

CDs are $16.98 a pop; digital is $9.99 per show. Not sure how many people will buy a show after the fact - say, a week/month/year later. I imagine the most sales are done at, or right after, the show. Does Pearl Jam advertise this service to fans at concerts? I would.

I'm guessing a 75/25 split between digital and CDs, which gives a weighted average price of $11.74 per sale. Say 1,000 sales per show - let's call that $12,000 in "bootleg" sales per show.

If you do 25 shows, that's revenue of $300,000. I'd guess the net on that is, what? 40%? I have no idea what it costs to record and produce CDs, or transfer them to digital files, but I'm sure it's not free. Plus, there's advertising.

That's net extra revenue of $120,000 for the tour. That's a lot to me, but I don't know if Prince thinks so.

Anyway, that's just a stab at numbers. If Prince wanted to net say, $1,000,000 from this, and if my net profit percentage is anywhere near close, he'd have to sell 8,000 copies per show for a 25-show tour.

Anyone think that's possible?

ah we posted at the same moment. I dont know if Pearl Jam advertises the bootlegs to their fans but they don't really need to. Pearl Jam has a very loyal fan base (just like Prince) and the fan club was established years ago.

I think your figures can be quite accurate and this would definataly work for Prince...maybe he can call Eddie Vedder for some tips and you know, jam a little bit while they're at it wink

Both Prince and Pearl Jam have created a culture with their fans but the difference between the two is that Prince has created this culture of mystery and confusion and making his fans always second guess his next moves. If Prince was straight up and forth coming with his fans, then maybe we wouldn't see this kind of thing. To me, that's a negative. I get that he wants to create his own way of doing things and I love that part about Prince but it can be tedious at times.

Pearl Jam on the other hand have been very public with their altruistic decisions and that has carried over to how they treat their fans and those fans love them for it. They also don't play tricks and make their fans jump through hoops to get their music.

Prince is too large of a music star/performer/icon to have this kind of angro amongst his fans. It's not that difficult to plan and release a properly marketetd album these days. I'm not asking for a straight ahead hit album. Just make it easy to pay for quality music that sounds good.

I'm not sure what "mega new portion" means, but sure, we can get it back on track:

The audio is really poor quality and it's a shame that this is what Prince chooses to release, especially when the performance was in his own house, where he has the means to get a really nice sounding soundboard recording.

I think everyone that has an opinion on the video has already posted their opinion. Besides, offering videos for sale IS what we're talking about, and "video for sale" IS part of the thread title.

I'm a recent 'Prince-convert' so I don't have opinion if Prince is good to his 'fans' or not but I did notice some people on this site are very negative about it. I was just saying that I like the way Pearl Jam handles things without saying that Prince is doing it the wrong way.
I'm just still high up in clouds from seeing Prince live for the first time in August, I'm here for the music music

Awesome!

Don't let the negativity bother you. I became a fan in 1976, when he released "Soft and Wet", although it wasn't until "1999" that I realized how good hewas.

The thing I've learned about Prince in all that time is that you have to go with the flow. Prince is not much on advance notice for anything, and he changes his mind more than I change my socks. If anyone says they know what he's going to do, they are fooling their self.

So I just sit back, enjoy what he's released so far, and dig anything new when it comes.

All that said, this is still the best place to get Prince news.

Purchased 5 hours ago. Confirmation from 3rdeye, confirmation from Paypal I have been charged. No download link. No response from customer service after sending 2 emails now. It's only $2, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little annoyed. What's also funny is I originally tried to login to buy this am using my previous account info having made several purchases before, now they have no record of that email address even though all the emails I have received from them are sent to that address. smile
