To be fair- many artists DO release stuff like this, do NOT take down fan videos on youtube, finish projects they start and have a good rapport with their fans. I'm only responding becasue you are posting something untrue. You may not CARE about those artists, but there is SO much freebie and extra stuff that others artists follow through on with good quality, good marketing and awesome fan communiction. It makes me think you don't really follow much but Prince? (which is ok- just don't knock other artists with an uninformed post). I'm not dissing Prince by saying this. He is simply VERY scattered when it comes to the business and follow through of music.

Let me get this right...
Pay for a video that was posted on YouTube Pay for a sub-par song from an awful CD Pay for a awful video recording
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Won't hijack the thread - my point isn't the VOLUME of output - but the quality and avaialbility of cool fan only stuff as well as regular releases. Quantity should not be the only condsideration.

Okay, I bought it for $1.77 (it's not going to break the bank).
Let's face it. There are TONS of small independant artists (like me ) out there who are ptting out higher quality videos that what Prince does most of the time.
Great 1080p picture quality, but crappy camera audio.....
Thanks Prince for your subquality video.... "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Totally agree with that. While it's disappointing to just get one live track from a full concert, at least I can listen to the track. When it's a minute or two of a track, I listen to it or watch it once, file it on my computer for completist purposes, and never will listen to it again. Even live tracks that I kind of like and are more or less complete as a song (such "Chapters & Verse") fade away as soon as he starts playing a guitar solo. I mean, if he was going to put the edited version out for free and then quickly release a full version with the solo for sale, I could understand it. But all that happens when I listen to a song like that is I get really irritated when it fades at the beginning of what sounds like a great solo. I don't see any purpose in that, and I definitely have no use for 90 seconds of "Let's Go Crazy" live. Or even 30 seconds of "Big City." No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Don't people have opinions of their own? Not every Prince fan is going to love everything he does, to me that's not a true Prince fan, just a worshiper. Prince true fans cares about what he does and how he does it, and they are not afraid of voicing their opinions, whether positive or negative. [Edited 10/22/13 10:39am]

I was at the show last weekend and was about 10 feet behind the camera man who shot the "I Like It There" vid that was just released. They had that camera man and at least one more about 15 feet directly in front of Prince using a tripod in the middle of the crowd. Both had somewhat small digital cameras and the whole thing seemed very amatuerish to me.
All of the footage released from these recent shows have straight camera mic audio and what the mics are picking up is mainly the stage monitors so it is very unbalanced sound. It wouldn't take long at all to simply sync in soundboard audio to the footage and release it (I could do it in about 5 Minutes!).
I guess we can't complain too much because any footage of Prince is good footage...especially if its from a show you have attended.
Hopefully someday he will start releasing some soundboards of these and other concerts he has performed.

I think the main problem with selling this, is that here we are at just 2 pages. He's limiting his reach by charging for it, although he likely doesn't care, which is fine and I support.
But I won't support by giving up my financial info, so as long as he keeps selling off singles, throw-aways, live clips, etc. on the 3rdEyeGirl site, I ain't buyin'. If it were a live DVD or Blu-Ray (or a new CD/vinyl album), I may reconsider. I'd like to see a proper release with decent distribution.
So for Prince, it's a matter of principle, not money. Same for me.

well I won't spend a dime on this if it looks like amateur shot concert footage with bad audio quality, this is stuff u put on youtube 4 free, not selling. It's the good quality stuff Prince should focus on selling instead but apparently that's 2 much 2 ask 4. [Edited 10/22/13 15:38pm] Welcome 2 The Dawn

We all know why Prince releases low grade videos and live audio: he thinks people won't have a reason to come to his concerts if it gives it away in high quality. And I guess he's not crying himself to sleep every night over it -- in fact he seems to be having a blast.
As a fan, I am furious I don't have loads and loads of high quality videos and live audio from Prince. As a person and fellow excentric/artistic type, I'm glad for him he's still having fun with music. Perhaps your definition of success ia about topping the charts while still having that career sprawling boxset, maybe his is to be able to give awesome concerts that you can't hear and see in top quality that easily.
It will be good enough for double cochlear implantee like me, so there.

And that is one of Prince's biggest problems: his inability to prioritize. This scattershot is exactly what is wrong: frustratingly fragmented for someone who does not have the time to follow this up close (and often he/she is too late because the video has been taken down from YouTube an hour after it was posted or there is no archive for a stream), and downright inconsistent.
I don't get that this company he signed with is okay with him releasing two albums, and that there seems to be no plan in place. Just look at this latest concert: intended to promote a set of remixes for a single that does not seem to be releated to any of the upcoming records (the rock-oriented 3rd Eye Girl or the big band funksouljazz dreck of an NPG album), yet performed by 3rd Eye Girl and then capped by Prince playing the same sample-based karaoke set that has been boring audiences for years. Oh yeah, in the midst of that there was a short snippet form the song the concert is supposed to promote and some of the dancers from the horrible video came on stage. And afterwards Prince sells a video (with audience sound!) featuring a song released in 1996.
Compare that to Prince back in the 1980s, when he actually promoted the album he had just released -- a strategy which made him a superstar (it also helped that those albums were almost instant classics, whereas of course his output of the past decade is instantly forgettable).
Trent Reznor released a new Nine Inch Nails album in September. When he toured festivals this Summer he already included several tracks from that album, and from late September he is playing an arena tour with a set that is centered around his new album. You can clearly see that he is really proud of this record, and that he wants as many people as possible to hear it. Also note that several of those festival shows were streamed live online and that those streams were archived and are downloadable for free via the website Reflecting In The Chrome (a website that collects fan recordings of every NIN performance ever and makes them available for download). Matter of fact, there was a press release from the record company that linked to several YouTube videos that had been posted by RITC. There was even a leak of a rehearsal for the festival set (in soundboard audio) and this was freely distributed online. YouTube is full of amateur videos of these shows, and there's a guy who's made a surprisingly decent video of one of the festival shows using only fan videos. Trent has urged people not to watch them or listen to recordings of the show or even glance at playlists, since he feels that coming "virgin" to the shows will enhance your experience -- but he has not taken down those videos. (Also note that Trent's previous record companies are also not attacking fans who post live videos or live recordings featuring music "they control".)
Looking at Trent's approach I can only conclude that he is a guy who is on message. He's promoting his record, and all of the side stuff he doesn't care about. Whereas Prince is still in the "throw stuff at the wall see what sticks" phase, while at the same time obsessing over inane crap. Take the Serpan debacle: the problem isn't that he was doing such a great job (because he wasn't), but that he was still doing a far better job than Prince's camp.
The simple fact that the Org still cannot link to official videos on YouTube is beyond parody. That Prince's official mouthpiece is an amateur celebrity gossip blogger who cannot string together a sentence without a spelling error and whose posts often are nothing more than rehashed tweets (which he doesn't link properly, so people CANNOT RETWEET THEM EASILY): ditto.

I also follow NIN's career, and he's got the artist/fan balance mastered. Free albums (Ghosts and The Slip) and HQ videos on a simple but well-run website. Pearl Jam is another band who are about the fans. To this thread specifically: Prince has never been a video artist. Most of his videos - even the WB ones - were subpar compared to his peers. He was always about the music. In general, I think Prince wants to embrace this indie "underground" persona. Hard to follow, die-hard fans, obscure low-if releases that are only temporarily available. It's not working because it's not what anyone wants from him.

What I can't believe is that you haven't learned your lesson by now and ditched Prince completely. You seem to enjoy the pain. Ha, and this is why I will continue to support the bootleggers.Prince is bootlegging himself and selling it instead of pro-shot soundboard stuff he has and can control. No BVH. It ain't about his inability to 'prioritize'. I would label his inability as 'CONTROL'. The reason he was such a financial success in the 80's was his ability to give a certain amount of his CONTROL to Warner Bros. In the 90's was his fight to gain CONTROL by limiting the amount of 'CONTROL' Warner Bros. could exercise. Since his contract ended with Warner Bros, Prince has been burdened and blessed with CONTROL of his musical empire. Burdened by his fight to CONTROL marketing of his music, blessed by his CONTROL of creating music without the artistic oppression of a music label. Prince to me is beyond genius in terms of musicianship and poetry and fashion and is The Artist. Had he remained in school, it would have limited his artistic maturation. But from a commercial business stand point, his refusal to acknowledge he has not been formerly educated from a scholastic or business school approach nor should he wory about such things is evident by the obvious discrepancy between the marketing of his career with Warner Bros. and his marketing. Then again, why should Prince give a moment of thought to this divide?

Yes I agree that everyone has there own opinion and I have my fair share of songs or releases that I dont like. Hell I didnt like the "Screwdriver Movie" -____- My problem is the people who ask why he releases "X" and not "Y" or "Z" I feel like some people are just spoiled for lack of a better word. Let me let it be said that it has nothing to do with liking or hating this particular video.

3EG deleted the 5 Breakfast Experience videos that they shared on their YT channel...they are officially GONE! In my opinion Prince isn't in control anymore...a real strategy doesn't exist, the youngsters around him have a huge impact on what's happening. I still can't believe he gave them THIS much control, it's not leading to a legacy for 3EG while it IS destroying Prince his legacy and annoying his fanbase

This is as funny as hell, it's on the stupid 3EG Youtube page for a number of days, I simply downloaded it, now it's 'blocked' due to 'copyright' problems (WTF?), but in any case, it's PATHETIC! It's like some kid in the audience is taking images froma phone, just hit delete. Bad video, bad sound. I hope Prince get's all this current rubbish off 3EG and kicks their asses, I wonder if he even knows about this lot, it's just so bad.

I don't disagree with you about the poor quality of the video, but there's no doubt Prince "knows" about it; he's posting it on his site, for sale, and tweeting about it through his official Twitter account. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.
