UnPopular Opinion. Parade is only half decent. My take on this album is that it is really a 6 song album (girls and boys, Life can be so nice, kiss, anotherwateverheadican'tspellit, some times it snows in april, and mountains). Christopher Tracy's parade is alright and Venus Dimilo is nice for the 20 seconds it lasts but the rest of the album is very bland and forgettable. I feel half the album is like the batman album where Prince constructed 6 songs to accompany the movie but not really be featured in it but only to be used as inspiration from the story. And the other six songs were meant to kind of be music used in the movie as background noise or to add effect to a movie like normal movie music. Is it me or should this album been at MOST 8 songs.

No. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Couldn't disagree more... I love Parade. I just which it was longer! Had it included Sexual Suicide, All My Dreams, Others Here With Us and Old Freinds 4 Sale it would have been another SOTT level album for me. Hundalasiliah!

I Wonder U is one of my favorites, very classy but sexy, with there was a longer version of it, not some jam session, but more of it's steaminess . Love the craziness and color of Christopher Tracy's Parade . Yes a very upopular opinion

Parade is a great album. As an album. As a collection of Prince songs, mos of them seem half-finished and don't work without each other and the over-arching aesthetic they share. Which is what makes it feel very much like an album rather than a collection of Prince tunes. Not that others don't acheive the same thing, being able to cohesively hang together through sonics or theme, but this one more than any other falls back on it to make it what it is.

I agree with riocoolnes except I'd swap Life Can Be So nice for Under The Cherry Moon.
A fantastic EP.

I love that it has so much going on from one song to the next, but it all flows really well. I like the short songs as much as the longer ones. So yeah, don't agree with this one.

TheDigitalGardener said: What was wrong with posting this in the unpopular opinions thread? He wanted to get some attention! Having said that, Rio has a point. Say whatever you want, but New Position and I Wonder U aren't exactly the greatest songs ever written. But that's okay. The overall flow of the album, the sound, the orchestra all make this into a wonderful musical trip in which the weaker songs also have a purpose. If Girls & Boys is fantastic, then Life Can Be So Nice, with its nonsense lyrics about scrambled eggs and all (??), allows you to catch your breath. So the whole becomes much, much bigger than the sum of its parts. And that's what making an LP is all about. And that's what I miss in Prince's new music. But Parade...yeah...those were the glory days...

my thing is. U guys can't honestly tell me when ur making a Prince mixtape or showing someone P music u show anyone songs like CTP, Do u lie, I wonder U, . COME ON MAN. if ur ipod comes on shuffle and one of these songs come up u can't tell me ur not like "IPOD PUT ON A BETTER PRINCE SONG"

Unpopular because it clearly indicates you missed the point. Parade is delicate, intellectual and unique. The concept is so difficult to grasp, yet still so very clear to everyone who "gets" it. It's Prince at his very best.

depends on the tastes of the person
When I makes Prince playlists I can grab at so many pieces that fit a subject or a feel
I Wonder U is very sensual poetic chic simple
If I wanted to make a Prince in France playlist I can grab a good number of songs(proteges too) with Do U Lie? that would work

I love Parade so much that it is the only Prince album around which I have an established ritual. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Parade is only half decent?
Away 'n bile yer heid man, yer haverin'!! Parade is my second favourite album by Prince. When I listen 2 it, it makes me feel that childhood feeling I got in the 80's. Blue skies, warm sunshine, fresh air & fun... Oh & the feeling that u could fly to the moon, if u so wished for it!! It has always instilled a feeling of infinite optimism & limitless self-potential whenever I've listened to it over the years. People shouldn't need pills from the Doctor, rather they should hand patients over the Parade LP. It'd b a much happier world! [Edited 10/16/13 16:16pm]

I think this album is uneven. The first four or five songs sound like unfinished demos."New Position" has potential, but it comes to an abrupt end, just when it's starting to heat up! That has always frustrated me,lol
"Christopher Tracy's Parade" sounds like a pretentious Sgt.Peppers outtake
When it's good,it's very good ("Girls and Boys","Anotherlover...") but I don't think this album is as strong as most fans seem to think.

Don't get me wrong, I love Newpowersoul as an album, but it's the musicality in Parade that just lifts you up body & soul, in waves of multi-coloured bubbles! Ha ha I know that sounds nuts, but Parade's music is sooo colourful & bright & alive... it fills my mind with such beautiful pictures! Nps is way darker & more sexual & makes me feel other, more complicated images & emotions. Give me the happy, childhood feelings any day!

Some days Parade is in my top ten, and some days it's not. Man...I don't kno'. Life's a bitch.

I think I really got into this at the time because nobody I knew was listening to it. I was a pimple faced awkward teenage usher at a movie theater when it was released. It bombed but we still ran the movie most days until we got a new one (maybe about 2 months?). Sweeping up popcorn, usually alone, while watching the closing credits "Mountains" was what really turned me from a casual fan into a huge fan.

Yes, I can tell you that. "Do U Lie?" was my favorite from the album for a long time, and "I Wonder U" is also, in my opinion, a classic track. But the real problem with picking apart the album is the whole sweep of the first side (had it on cassette, still think of it in those terms)--it's really one song, and I can't break it up. "Christopher Tracy's Parade" and "Life Can Be So Nice" might bother me in isolation, but not in context. The second side doesn't hang together--it's just a set of songs--but they're all strong ones (again, I like "Do U Lie?").
