I LOVE that album. So underrated. One of the certain number I can listen to all the way through.

"Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Another excellent review...

Either I missed it, or no one mentioned, Still Waiting is about 9 or 10 seconds longer on the vinyl release than on the CD release.

wink

Concerning "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and the lyric "I ain't got no money." If you consult the 1986 birthday show before he starts singing he says "check the lyric change right here" then after he says the "I ain't got no money" line he says "that's a lie." So in a way he did address the good Captains critique of the song.

I love the live version of "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" from 1981-ish when he says "why you wanna treat me so bad...bitch!" and then goes in to an instrumental jam which features bits of "I Feel for You." There is some nice guitar in that jam.

The live version of "Still Waiting" from the Dirty Mind tour is much better than the studio version. I like the chant that he added ("wait, wait, love to come") and the instrumental bit at the beginning. This is an example of why I wish he would perform more "new" songs live ("new" meaning anything post Warner Bros.). Not every song can be "saved" but there are tons of songs from 1996-present that he could try doing a little differently live. He did it with "When I Lay My Hands on You" at Montreux in 2009, surely there are other recent songs that would benefit from similar treatment?

I think you guys may have missed something about "It's Gonna Be Lonely." For me it is clearly the prototype of the "classic" Prince ballad. It is clearly not as good as what would come a few years later ("Do Me Baby," "International Lover") but the pieces were there and it is definitely much better than the other ballads that he did on For You and Prince. It is hard for me to describe it but there is a "Princeness" to that song that is missing from his other early ballads.

Great episode, extremely entertaining and I am happy that you guys seem to have "rediscovered" the album. It does often get overlooked and lumped in with For You as not being a "real" Prince album. He did only get better with subsequent albums but the only real weakness in the album is that it features too many ballads.

Huh, it is definitely odd that MC missed an opportunity to tout the superiority of the vinyl over the CD. wink

Another great show guys.

Completely agree with you about how great and warm the mastering/production on this album sounds compared to what followed in the 80s.

MC, Playa, Toe Jam and Captain,

nice job on this classic album. I agree, this was the first true album where he was in complete control without others involved. I think For You was the ode to the future. Prince was the album that really showed what he was about. To already be making songs like Sexy Dancer and Bambi and I wanna be your lover and Feel for you at this young age, was something out of sight. I really appreciate the effort you guys put into this review. I agree with most although I think its perfect the way it is, including the slow ballads, because that was who he was and it was exactly the way it was meant to be. Prince is still an amazing classic album. Thanks for reminding me.

"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Another top review chaps, cheers.

Got to show my love for "When we're dancing close and slow". One of my favourite all-time Prince songs - ethereal, and just seems to float into your consciousness and swishes away in a breeze of gorgeous intimacy. Beautiful.
