Are the hornz too much? After Watching many of the livestreams and many of Prince's latest concerts, I'm beginning to feel like Prince is over emphazing his band and drawing attention away from himself. When Prince played Welcome 2 Chicago, his day 2 concert was his highest reviewed concert probably since montreux 2007. Yes he did have a 12 piece however, they weren't in use that much but when they came in they were powerfull. THe following night THe horns were in use a lot more however it still wasn't overpowering because it went from being used in 15 percent of songs to 30 percent.
Ik it sounds like i'm a heretic. However, When P has been at his funkiest he hasn't really had more than 4-6 horns. In my opinion if P wants to be as funky as possible he should put alot less emphasis on his horn section and alot more on his percussion section which is the basis for all funk music.
I think the part that scares me the most is prince is turning into a "SINGER" . In the mid 80s like during the parade tour he didn't play that much guitar but he did a ton of dancing and crazy moves which made him a Frontman. Frontmen are bad ass. But because Prince isn't dancing and jumping off pianos anymore. He's been stripped of the that title. But thats okay because Prince still can be bad ass with his sick as hell guitar skills and piano skills. But if he isn't playing guitar or piano all he is doing is Singing and Pointing at his band members .
What's ur take on this? | |

I've never been a fan of the horns...be it recorded or live. Rather I should say especially live. They are to messy and can't deliver his music with the same punch as a well played synth chop. I like the period just prior to 3rd eye girl where re brought back Mr Hayes for the synth...the versions of tracks were very true to the originals such as 1999 and this was all sold with the synth being on point.

Definately 2 many horns. I don't mind 3 or 4 at the most 2 add to the song but when the whole song is reworked around them it just ruins it. I have 2 say that this horn version of the npg is my least fav of all of the bands. I am at polar opposites. Dislike the NPG atm but love 3rdeyegirl sets.

Horns are the epithome of funk music and they add to the funk sounscape .but Prince always sounded better when he used synths insted of horns. more futuristic more tech.
The recent horn fiesta bores me very much because now days one thing is sure Prince and the NPG means overuse of Back vox and horns and Prince not touching an instrument whole night. Its like Prince is a guest on his stage.
I like when Prince tries new different things but 12 piece horn section and not playing instruments is not what i think by that. And the funny things Prince have so many ass kissing fans who would praise anything he does.
If Prince sings yellow pages sitting in a chair backed by 100 horns piec e band fans would scream in delight. fuck that [Edited 10/7/13 6:04am]

I went to paisley the other night and that horn section is tight, I love horns, I play sax, and those guys up there r great they r well oiled machine when they play together. Now the backing singers the other night sucked ass, Shelby j and those two other chicks, not so good, the girls were ok as solo, but having them sing together, man it sounded like three drunk chicks at a kareoke(sp) bar. But don't be hating on the horns, the were great!!!

the horns are the only inspired and energetic music coming from him today. Getting rid of the horns just makes him sound tired and bland.

Just listening to some early 70s Kool and The Gang - that's how you do horns.

Yes, they are. I went to the show this Saturday too, and the one in July. I'm not saying the horns sound bad, it's that they are all over everything and solos on many songs. Maybe I've been spoiled. When I see a Prince show, I want to see and hear Prince. As for the backup singers, I don't think I even need to go there. (lmao @ Stuart3121's comment...my thoughts exactly!) I'll take a 3rd Eye Girl show over a NPG show anytime. TRUE BLUE
