Disc II of Emancipation is probably the CD most responsible for getting me into Prince.

"Sex in the Summer" is one of my favorite Prince tracks from the '90s... Awesome! Aside from that, "The Holy River" is the only other song I'd put on a "Best of Emancipation."

disc 1:

somebody's somebody / get your groove on / courtin' time / white mansion /

.

disc 2:

one kiss at a time / soul sanctuary / dreamin' about u / joint 2 joint /

the holy river

.

disc 3:

slave / new world / face down / my computer / the love we make /

.

So you like 5 out of 10 songs on each disc.

That doesn't make disc 2 any better or worse than disc 1 or 3 biggrin

Personally, I suspect that you also really like Emale, the Plan and even Saviour. wink

lol

well, i must admit, "emale" is the one single prince song that i just don't know what

to think of. i seriously don't know if i like it or not. and i've listened to it many times

to make sure. so yes, i might just love it. biggrin

My favorite is 3. If prince would have done it smart he should have focused 1 at pop radio, focused and pushed 2 at urban ,and 3 at djs and clubs .
Disc 2 is pretty darn good. Lots of good grooves and not too terribly over produced.

Biggest mistake with this lip is not releasing" one of us" as a single.

i think the biggest mistake was releasing "betcha by golly wow" as it's first single lol

.

but he also had a spot of bad luck with the label going under just about when they

planned to release "face down".

.

than again "somebody's somebody" and "the holy river" didn't do anything chartwise

(well nothing too great anyway) either and those were just fine as singles imo.

Ok. My opinion on this disc hasnt really changed from the first time I heard it to my last post. To me, its the kind of record/music I would play when Im having a small to medium sized intimate dinner party at my multi-million dollar house overlooking the fabulous Hollywood skyline, none of which actually exists at this time smile But thats the kind of vibe I get from it when listened to in its entirety. Not that thats a bad thing, but just an album I wouldnt ordinarily listen to. Its refined, sophisticated, words I wouldnt normally use to describe myself. But for certain occasions, like the one I described above, it would work.

To think I used to pass up songs like Emale and FLSM/W though, yeah, shame on me. Joint 2 Joint is another jam.

It has The Love We Make on it. That's really all you need to know. shrug

I agree that first single was the wrong choice...and you hit it with the label folding soon after. But first and foremost was the death of the baby soon after the release and Prince and Mayte's reaction like everything was ok when it was clear it wasn't tainted the whole period. IMO, they should stopped everything and dealt with such a tragic loss.

But over time, I have come to love this album. There are a few songs on here I think would've been decent hits if they had proper videos released and proper promotion to radio...Sleep Around, White Mansion, In this Bed I Scream, Sex in the Summer, My Computer and Face Down to name a few.

Lars!! What about "Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife"?! That must be the epitome of Prince sweet balladery (incl. all the "cold" production)!

Agreed! What is Isten on?! Let's Have A Baby is SUBLIME, in a similar vein to the superlative nature of Silver Tongue. Saviour is a brilliant rock ballad in a similar vein to 3 Chains of Gold and featuring Michael B and Sonny T i.e. what is there not to like?! Just imagine that song on Chaos and Disorder after Into The Light/I Will. It would have been the perfect New Power Trio of rock ballad songs. Finally, I can't understand how ANYONE cannot hear the genuine emotion and almost desperation to connect through his vocals on Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife. It's seriously HEARTFELT. I think it's one of the best sections of the Emancipation set - The Holy River onwards until the end of Disc 2, which is why I was shocked when I saw Isten's tastes! He has much to answer for.

smile

I don't always agree with you but i love how the "spirit" is always a part of how you experince prince's music. Disc 2 is really prince at his most open and heartfelt. i'm amazed at those who can't hear and feel that.

It's sugary schmaltz just adds to the song's appeal for me. He was in love, there's nothing more schmaltzy than that.
And only Prince could admit to have being a slut and still turn it into something romantic. No wonder the little fucker got the pussy!
don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

Some of the strongest songwriting of his career is on this disc imho.

Btw, I rarely if ever see it mentioned, but does anyone else love the instrumental coda to Curious Child? Although it's quite straightforward harmonically, Prince's musicianship really comes to the fore with this kind of one-man-band orchestration.

This probably would have been one of Prince's top 3 albums had it been release as a solo disc. Some of his most timeless music. I even got into "Holy River". It initially seemed out of place of the disc to me.

The little acoustic guitar figure at the end? I think that's very tasteful too, but it goes for 10 sec's and then repeats on the fade-out. Nothing at all to do with the kind of instrumentation I'm referring to.

highfive I like every jam on that album except Sex In the Summer - which is the Prince sound I dislike the most: generic pap pop - like Breakfast Can Wait.

I would say it's very good.

Emancipation gets a lot of flack for its style of 'production'. But that 'problem' is mainly reserved to disc/chapter I of the album.

I believe disc II is not the very best of his best, but it is highly unique and of a very high quality, in every way - songwriting and lyrics, performance and sound production, with the exception of a few tunes maybe (the piano on Let's have a bay for example; great song but the piano is lost in some sort of hall playing effect)

Somehow much of the music on this disc has been playing in my mind for weeks already, so I feel a need to express myself positively on it, lol..

I especially like Soul Sanctuary, Email, Joint 2 joint, the Holy River, Saviour and Friend, lover, sister, mother, wife.

Disc 2..one of my favorites disc of P...it's probably the most record with the most open heart of P...too bad it all ended up this way for him, Mayte and their child...

it's a pretty solid disc up to and including "the holy river"

but after that it just falls apart. i hate everthing after it lol

we all know what prince was going for and for that, it's

a unique disc and really rather sweet. but i do hate the

last part of that disc with a passion though biggrin

journey 2 the center of ur heart and goodbye would've

been great choices for songs to include there imo.

ah....goodbye would have killed this disc..seriously?

As an opening song journey 2 the centre would have been perfect though...

it's as sweet as can be...but afterall P. is a pretty sweet guy...

Awesomely under appreciated cd. Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife is downright ethereal. His best unknown love song, IMHO. Well, one of them anyway. smile
