lol Admittedly, you're not wrong re that line in F, L, M, S/W, however, isn't that part of Prince's charm? It leaves you thinking, "No, he didn't, did he?" There are countless examples of sheer disbelief when it comes to his lyrics, but I don't think that detracts from an otherwise superlative display of vulnerability and yearning in this particular song. Even the beats sound like they want to connect, but I appreciate that lyrics are important for authenticity, and those particular ones do appear surprising, and I am being polite. As for Let's Have A Baby, I can't help but categorise that as a beautiful moment captured on record, regarding Prince's earnest feelings regarding fatherhood. It takes the snippet on Vicki Waiting to an entirely new and heartfelt level. But, again, I appreciate that it might feel inappropriate/difficult to listen to, given the tragic circumstances thereafter. I guess that only leaves "The Plan" as a redeemable for you, so I won't even try to suggest it's a quite melancholic and quietly beautiful palette cleanser between Saviour and F, L, S, M/W, since all my other attempts to suggest your tastes require questioning have been appropriately kicked up the backside. Still, I really, really do love this particular stretch of 6 songs.

Agreed! What is Isten on?! Let's Have A Baby is SUBLIME, in a similar vein to the superlative nature of Silver Tongue. Saviour is a brilliant rock ballad in a similar vein to 3 Chains of Gold and featuring Michael B and Sonny T i.e. what is there not to like?! Just imagine that song on Chaos and Disorder after Into The Light/I Will. It would have been the perfect New Power Trio of rock ballad songs. Finally, I can't understand how ANYONE cannot hear the genuine emotion and almost desperation to connect through his vocals on Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife. It's seriously HEARTFELT. I think it's one of the best sections of the Emancipation set - The Holy River onwards until the end of Disc 2, which is why I was shocked when I saw Isten's tastes! He has much to answer for.

oh please lol

as soon as he goes:

"if i ever shared a bed, it was only cause i wanted to live up 2 what the people said"

so either he's been fucking around because that's what people expect of him, or he

never did and just went along with the press and their stories because it was a good

commercial angle to stay in the news and sell more records.

either way disbelief and a totally off putting sentiment to put into a song like that

falloff

i don't like "let's have a baby" because i find it painful to listen to, for the obvious

reasons. plus, it's just too much already. as a private song for mayte it is just a

gorgeous intent, but shared on an actual album it becomes weird for me. i don't

want that look into their lives.

saviour, i just hate lol i'm sorry but i do. (yet i love songs like 3 chains of gold,

strays of the world, etc).

I just adore you Lars. mushy

Lars is a genious in making crazy opinions seem sound. He probably thinks disc I is WAY better than II wink

And my dear friend Ivy, she has no patience. She listens once in a decade to an album, superficially and then when it doesn't hit her right away, she thinks it's crap. wink

Be honest now: you didn't skip a song, you weren't busy doing something else more 'important' while "listening" but you actually took 1 precise, whole hour of your time to REALLY let it get to you?

I did not skip one song even though I wanted to skip two. I listened to the CD while driving into work and there was nothing about this CD that was going to get into me because I could not get ito it. I really tried.

i found the words for the most part to be corny. It was like a goofy love song not meant for anyone's ears but the lady it was written for.

There was nothing deep or anything to get into for me with the exception of Savior. That song spoke to me because I have been in love like that.

OK, so it depends on you being able to relate to the lyrics or not.

Honestly, maybe the songs on disc II are all about "the lady it was written for".

Yet, they aren't written like that. It's only because you know, because you are aware, that they were.

That you seperate yourself from the music, which is not exclusively meant for "her".

I don't experience ANY problems listening to this disc and not relating to it, because it has to do with "her". I can perfectly fine listen to it without having those connoctations.

Honestly, I find it unfair to judge the album on that basis.

The entire songwriting and performance is simply ignored.

Even the sound production is much better than on disc I and III.

But it's the lyrics...

Not to mention the arrangements.

There aren't really that many Prince albums that are on the same level as that.

But it's the lyrics about her.

I can listen to the whole disc 2 all the way through and find it enjoyable. The only thing I really don't like about it is the FLSMW lyric. They're kind of a clunkfest and often cringeworthy, while trying to be heartfelt. Apparently written in secrecy "while she slept," though it sounds as if it was written while HE slept.

Saviour lyrics aren't exactly high art, but that song isn't trying to be anything more than kitsch.

What's your perception is your perception and thus can't be "wrong". But only going by the lyrics may very well be judged as superficial and unfair "listening".

As was the case with The Rainbow Children, I initially hated the songs because of the words but upon listening years later, enjoyed the music. I do not feel the same way about this disc.

If YOU are judging my listening as superficial and unfair, that is unfortunate. i don't care what too many other people on here think bout it.

Just like others don't have to care about your opinions, but could, you don't have to care what others think of your superficial listening, even when you also could, since your experience with TRC proves to you that if you would get over the lyrics, you could actually ENJOY it.

You are not obliged to do or agree with anything, but you are the one missing out on the joy. Not those who take the time, will and energy to go deeper.

And who knew; you actually LIKED IT.

But to Emancipation disc II? shake
You listen to it only TWICE in 10 years and then still believe you have a fair opinion on it...

in a way, i do lol

emancipation is a weird 3 disc album. because looked at from a bit of a distance,

it falls apart into 3 different projects:

Disc 1: something like an actual 12 song prince pop album, covering lots of styles

and directions. a bit of everything, really.

.

Disc 2: his love ballad bouquet, a present celebrating his love for mayte, filled to

the brim with ballads and declarations of love. in it's make up, a unique album in

prince's discography

.

Disc 3: the experimental, self indulgent disc filled with absolute winners and some

questionable headscratchers.

.

as an actual album unto itself, disc 1 stands as the most harmonious for me, but

i think i like about an equal amount of songs per disc. it's a hard call.

disc 1:

somebody's somebody / get your groove on / courtin' time / white mansion /

in this bed eye scream

.

disc 2:

one kiss at a time / soul sanctuary / dreamin' about u / joint 2 joint /

the holy river

.

disc 3:

slave / new world / face down / my computer / the love we make /

.

i don't particularly hate any of the other songs, i kind of like most of them, but the

ones i mentioned are the ones i absolutely love. funny enough, exactly 5 per disc,

so i'm still not sure which one i like best.

.

thanks for baring with me through this labourious and really rather uncalled for

explanation. that will be all

biggrin

Disc 2 is definately the best of the three. The whole album is a little light and plastic, but I still reckon it could have made a great single/double album - lose the covers and the really awful songs like Da da da. I would have some mix of the following:

Jam Of The Year

Right Back Here In My Arms

Somebody's Somebody

White Mansion

+ In this Bed Eye Scream

One Kiss At A Time

Soul Sanctuary

Emale

Curious Child

Dreamin' About U

Joint 2 Joint

The Holy River

Let's Have A Baby

Saviour

Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/ Wife

Slave

New World

My Computer

The Love We Make

Emancipation

This is a really strong set when you look at it

Now we have something.

In fact, I might go create this playlist now.

Ok, just started it. The only hick-up is the transition from Somebody's Somebody to White Mansion, so maybe switch the order of it and the song after it.

So you like 5 out of 10 songs on each disc.

That doesn't make disc 2 any better or worse than disc 1 or 3 biggrin

Personally, I suspect that you also really like Emale, the Plan and even Saviour. wink
