I don't understand the question.

Nouveaudance understood it to be something quite amusing (partly it was intended as such) But you (or others) may perceive it differently.

Prince recites the prayer, "The Lord's Prayer", in the song "Controversy", and Tremolina is asking if you like it, I guess, or something.

I think you are referring to The Lord's Prayer and if so, at the time it was very powerful. What other artist was doing such a thing? To me, the more powerful reference to a higher power was the next album in Let's Pretend We're Married where he jumps from talking sex to talking God to talking profanity.

As a lot of stuff he did, it was wicked -in a good way lol . but I've described a lot of what he did in that period as 'dangerous' . like walking by a room with the door slightly open, and you wonder should you look in/go in

Controversy Album - I believe he's refering to: do I believe in God? Do I believe in me? Controversy.
And the Lord's Prayer. Which was riskae as hell. For Prince to put that on wax! That could've ended his career. Early. Before he even set the stage. For his massive catalog. Prince. Sex. And. Spiritality. Are one. And they are! I've had an experince to Do Me Baby. That I will never forget. A very unquie experince at that.Whewwwww.We all know how people think sex is bad in religion. According to society. It's an evil act. And the devil will try you. Tempt you. Temetations come calling. When in fact. It's a natural act. But putting yourself. Out there like that. Hittin Everything. And Anything. And lettin Anything. And. Everything hit that. Then that's a different story. Love. Intimacy. Sex. Go hand and hand. Different. Yet. The same. Another way of looking at this: From a lady like me prospective. ♡LikeTheGreatAndPowerfulOzButWaaaaayyyyyBetter♡ Witches tried to take my ruby slippers. Many a times. She ain't worthy. Is how they think. But they don't know God. And what he can do. I'm living testimony of that. In that in itself is controversy. To talk about God. Especially when you're sexual. Sensual in nature. And don't let ignorant people. Call you a ho for it either. It's a world. No. A whole universe. Of a difference. Between the intellctul and the ignorant !! Good to see my question provokes some thought. Of course the way I phrased my question seems like it's about "the Lord's prayer" But you could read it also as it was written with "Our Father" in mind. And then also, in my language for example the Lord's prayer is named as such. But the question really is how "powerful" he is. In Controversy The prayer, or the Lord. Or even your real daddy. Up to you really how you want to approach it. Just asking a question you could approach with sincerity if you want to. Or not.

Personally, I think it was a very powerful thing Prince did with that. meaning it was so bold and daring, so "controversial" but also so sincere and inviting, and so "vulnerable". yet almost even as if he tricks the listener into praying. Like a 'devil' would do... Even the one who doesn't believe at all and doesn't want to pray the Lords's prayer at all. Even he or she might just pray along. The song and the prayer in it is just too good, just too "funky", not to do it. Of course, many could never have done that. But who are they and tell us how you really feel?
Oh and of course those who did pray along, sincerly or not, consciously or not, you can tell how you feel about it too. --

Funny story, I think. I've never shared this before but I remember it like it was yesterday. Back in 1981, Controversy was just released. Everyone who was a teen in the urban areas, just a die hard Prince fan...period. The man was our pied piper, being able to speak the words we could only dream but dared to speak out loud. Putting all our pubescent fantasies and thoughts on wax. But that's another topic.
- * I was at a Catholic High School Dance. The single was all over the radio, so of course it had to be played. However the "teen" DJ had the album version on the wheels of steel. As the nuns (chaperons) paraded around the gym, I'm looking at the turntable and thinking, OMG what is going to happen when it reached the Lord's Prayer?
*- The anticipation was killing me. Right before the part, the DJ faded the music down, moved the needle forward and finished the song.
I'm laughing as I type this because it was just hilarious, I think more so now. Thanks for letting me share. I needed the laugh.

The best thing is the way he performs it. He is praying on the beat, almost like he is rapping it. But then in some super funky Prince way... Give us this day - bang! our daily guitar and forgive us our synthezisers

It's threads like this that lure me back much as this song does as an irresistable force... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato
