Prince felt that the Black Album was born out of his self-doubt, and a spiteful answer to critics, maybe he was regetting breaking up the Revolution for the first time, believing some of his critics that he wasn't the same Black Prince any more, or he was past hit.

So he's looking for inspiration, trying to create something hardcore, to show them they were wrong.

He tries E looking for inspiration/release/escapism, and the bad trip he interprets as punishment for his self doubt in his own music/spirit.

So he goes about creating something that is like a musical drug - Lovesexy.

Saying I don't need drugs, music is a drug!
