Prince, Sex and God

Prince's music embraced sex before the eyes of God. Do you think he is repenting for his past actions?

pray

Do you believe he is repenting because of that threesome?

he's always been repenting - and sinning - and repenting again, all within the span of the same 45 minute album.

Remarkable, that.

Now it seems he's leaving out the sinning part... "70 minutes of repenting", a/k/a "The Rainbow Children".

That's why I dontr get it about the spiritual fervor that people claim about Lovesexy..I guess it wasn't strong enough to stop Gett Off, Sexy MF etc...

I wonder if there is anybody that does not want to see Prince get nasty again. More importantly, will it really be to the detriment of his music if he decides not to sin again?

I don't think it'll be a detriment to his music if he stops being nasty, but ENUFF with the new Larry Graham versions of old songs,example...
Days Of Wild pre-LG "She's a motherfucking liar, and I'm a set up kid".
Days Of Wild apres-LG "She's a big old liar, and I'm a set up kid".
That old man has alot 2 answer 4!

That depends on what you mean by nasty. Some people here consider that little innocuous, albeit suggestive snippet in "Mellow" nasty.

Prince is capable of making his own choices as to how he'll lead his life and work through his beliefs. Surely Prince is to answer for, as you put it, not Larry Graham?

Mellow is suggestive, not nasty. Interestingly, when I initially listened to The Rainbow Children, I didn't miss anything from Prince's sexual repertoire.

i would like it, personally. Just because it adds a little spice. But I can live without it. Sometimes - like on Orgasm - he just gets silly while trying to be daring and shocking and sexy. It's not 1981 anymore, and nobody will be shocked by anything he does, so...

were they? shocked about what? how unlistenable 30% of the album is? Shockingly pretentious?

TRC needed some serious reigning in. I made a killer 9 track version of TRC... rocks.

But.. of course... all this is just my opinion. smile

..vanessa bartholemew reports a shockingly bizarro career move by Prince! tonite at 11!!

Listening to "Mellow" it sounds to me like he still has a very healthy view of sex.

In the past he’d lay Kim Basinger down with one breath and use the next to champion monogamy. Now he’s just consistently breathing in the latter context.

Which is why he has no problem singing “Do Me, Baby”, but he won’t touch “International Lover”. One is going “9 1/2 Weeks” on your wife while the other is a fling with a flight attendant.

true that

I think that he was taking "love is god, god is love" pretty literally during lovesexy. I think he was, to some degree, rejecting church-style religion in favor of joy-style religion.

And then life got bumpy for him and he caved. sad

interesting point... i never thought of international lover being w/ a flight attendant... i thought it was more metaphorical, like LRC

That's a very good point, Brendan. I actually think Do Me, Baby sounds sexier than International Lover.

Another very good point. What exactly got bumpy and how did that make him reflect upon his own beliefs?

I meant that somewhat humorously. wink

Metaphorically he is of course talking about a fast, adventurous woman. But clearly this song is about a fling and that’s why he isn’t singing its praises in concert right now. Really hard to pass this one off as sex with your wife, you know? wink

I think he's tried many a time to "change".

First time was Purple Rain (84), then Anastesia (88), then Holy River (96)
then Rainbow Children (00).

Each song refers a certain "change"
he is aspiring to.

closer to my higher self, closer to God,
voice inside ...THIS time I was listening
...covenant will be kept THIS time etc.

Do you think Prince felt that he was 'failing' to make the neccessary transition towards his higher self, his God? Do you think he felt that he needs discipline to 'succeed' in his quest?

Maybe he's not really denouncing the sexual. I think he was just concentrating on something else in The Rainbow Children. I don't think it was contradictory for him to go from Lovesexy to Gett Off or any other "dirty" song--his songs seemed to be saying that you could have sex and believe in God at the same time. And I think it makes sense that it then progressed to "Sex between two people is all right, if all the love in the world is what they got." This is just my opinion, but it's one of the things that made me like Prince in the first place: You could have sex if you wanted and still make it to heaven. That was what was pretty revolutionary about his music to me and really drew me in as a fan. That was a spiritual vision very few people had the courage to speak about before him.

I suppose he lacked a certain disipline
on each of those occasions as he sort of
"slipped" back to his old ways.

It might have to be examined further
to see if specific conditions permeated
him at the time. Maybe drugs, dissapointing relationships ...

also I've noticed he has even questioned
the existence of God.

Not at all!!prince never thought sex was dirty or sinfull. if he did things that he feels he need repent 4, it's HIS personal business.i do feel he always connected sex with religion/spirituality.ALOT of his SEX antics on stage were a gimic imho. the FANS loved it. he was "different".however, his music and lyrics are definately sexual & sensuous, right up to this day, but one must listen and carefully analyze the meanings of his music. what may seem sexually oriented, is really meant 2 b spiritual. he connects them closely. if u r asking if prince is more religious now than in the past? yes. but not bcuz he feels like he's a sinner, and needs to repent heavily so that God accepts him. 1st; he ALWAYS was religious in one form or another. (meaning different kinds) NOW, he is more so. imho, i feel he's also still not connected to any ONE denomination as some ppl feel. he studied many different religions in his past. what he has embraced & what he hasnt isnt all that clear to anyone but HIM. i really doubt he converted to any "certain" one, no matter that he hangs with larry G. he believes in ONE God though, and that we were created by him. going off subject, sorry, but we ALL have things we regret doing. God 4gives us ALL. i'm SURE prince knows this.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses

Hold up! Who said gettin' nasty was a sin?
If you gotta wife, and you wanna get nasty with her, more power 2 ya!

The last show I saw, he projected a VERY sexy vibe, (I just love his hands).
Prince doesn't need to grind his organ on his piano to get the point accross!lol!
MMM...his eyes, his lips, his fingertips...ouch! too hot!
