September 11 in Prince History 11 SeptemberRecordings
I had to laugh at the high concentration of rubbish emanating from Paisley on this day. YIKES.

STFU, Schlomo! They are amongst my favourite P songs, especially Something Funky (This House Comes) and The Flow (the original), not to mention Schoolyard. These are the kinds of outtakes that I would love in pristine quality. I can only imagine if Diamonds and Pearls, the album, had been expanded to a larger concept, to include the superlative songs from his catalogue at the time, such as Allegiance, Open Book and I Hear Your Voice.

I can't tell if you're being serious right now. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

Semi-serious, Schlomo. C'mon...

I'm imagining him looking at the completed song list for the day and high-fiving Tony M. "Wow, we really got a lot accomplished today!" "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

Afterwhich Tony then gets together with Carmen, behind P's back...and P gets together with Nona, behind Carmen's back...all before they regroup in the studio to record GoldNigga.

And on that note, I like PrinceVault's description of Player, recorded in 1991: "The track is a mellow track with some falsetto vocals and rap-spoken vocals, in which the narrator suggests that he is tired of being a player and want to "check out the settling down". The track remains unreleased."

I like a lot of stuff from that era. Player is nice. I love Get Blue and Allegiance. Hell, I even like Schoolyard, which seems to get dissed a lot. It's the Tony M. collabs that I still refuse to accept. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

The MUSICALITY of GoldNigga is actually quite hot. I hear you regarding Tony, but I actually kinda dig it in a train crash way, in a similar vein to why I thoroughly enjoy the T.C. Ellis album. It's almost so bad, but produced and mixed in a way that "they" believe it's good, that it actually becomes good, to my ears. There's nothing quite like 'belief' when someone is doing something; and I think P and Tony fully believed in their work together. It was in your face. And it was ballsy. And although it was almost entirely devoid of hip-hop authenticity, that did not matter to them. They believed in their schtick. And I dig that. Cue the music: Call The Law. Now, Schlomo, you tell me, is that guitar solo not off the chain? The beat, the rap, the bravaddo, the guitar solo, it all works. But it's for a very niche audience. Hardcore Prince fans ONLY.

I will fully admit that the music was fantastic then. I like a lot of the Goldnigga stuff. It's specifically Tony's contributions that irk me. And Tony's influence on Prince. They certainly were "ballsy" and "in your face," as you say, for better or worse.

Regarding P's headspace on JUGHEAD, you make an interesting point, Schlomo. I am guessing with all those tracks, like Something Funky, The Flow, Schoolyard, Horny Pony, Gett Off, Violet the Organ Grinder, Gangsta Glam, Clockin The Jizz, Push etc, it just sounds to me like P was simply jamming and jamming with the newest incarnation of the NPG (Michael B, Sonny T et al) and looking for more and more jams. He even makes a lyric to that effect on Daddy Pop, "I got grooves and grooves up on the shelf, deep purple concord jams...". So, at a guess, I strongly believe Jughead came about as a latest idea, which he then got the band working out and jamming to, reworking it into a studio cut much like FUNK N ROLL appears to have come about. It is not the best thing ever; it is just the latest thing he is enamoured by, unlikely to be revisted again in future eras because it was/is just a jam (and not a song in the same vein that Little Red Corvette is a masterfully crafted song).
