Make sure there is a dress code. Dress as Prince, no matter what era, or Prince associates.
Most important is that people feel welcome and at ease. When they feel they 'have to' participate or be funny, it's no fun. I want to create the perfect atmosphere: have a good time, be yourself, even if that means you don't want to talk to anybody, 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

When I turned 40 a few years ago, I did a Prince-themed costume party. The invitations said, "It's My Party, I Can Prince if I Want To"...
Unfortunately, since my birthday is in August (102 F that day), the week before Labor Day, I didn't get the turnout I expected, but the ones who came had a ball.
My friends who dressed up came as: Jerome (2- one carried a mirror), Vanity, Apollonia, "The Gold Experience" (wore all gold), Larry Graham, Candy (she brought a sax), Dr. Fink, Dorothy Parker...
I had started a thread, but the pictures have been deleted or removed due to changes on Photobucket. Here are a few:

Hope this helps... Have fun! "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Everyone brings a CD with a Prince mix on it... and they put them on a table and everyone picks one and takes it home. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Ha ha thank guys sounds great , I've already organised purple balloons , 80 prince masks for the tables and blow up guitars , now looking for stuffed doves we also called a "mini man" to dress up as prince and serve purple rain cocktails but he's busy that night !!!! Damn !! I am sure it will be fun though ( also tried booking a prince tribute band but they wanted £2000 !!!

When I read this, I immediately thought of those little word magnets that you combine and make your own poetry, lyrics, etc. Maybe you could print out a lot of random Prince lyric words and cut them up. Then have people try to assemble into real lyrics on the wall. I'm thinking each word is about the size of a business card . . . maybe you put them in a big purple box and have everyone grab a few on their way in.
