Why I STILL Even Bother?

I've been asked that more times than I can count but I never could give a definitive answer because I really didn't KNOW myself...until just now.

I was cleaning off one of my very first external hard drives and a video of Love Bizarre - LIVE - 1986 just randomly started playing...and it hit me like a brick

I really and truly wish I could share the video that I was looking at, with the rest of you but I can't - because of Prince - himself!

The utter and absolute irony in that, is just BEYOND freaking ridiculous!!!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

They aren't illegal.

They say they are illegal.

Rentseekers made everyone believe that stuff to be able to extract money.

Lately I have to ask myself the same thing. Teaser this teaser that. It's really a teaser because 99.9% of it will never see the light of day. I'm 43 years old not 15. I still dig the music but the games are just plain ridiculous and petty.

Ironic that I've always admired him for not doing what everyone else does. Now I wish he would as far as the business side of things go.

I know it's been said here before over and over but I swear he pisses his fans off deliberately. Like I said I have no problem with the music. It is what it is. But honestly everything else is so much of a irritation anymore it's starting to overshadow the music for me. For example the first 2 months of this year I was an excited giddy fan. Over the months that excitement is gone. I'm tired of thinking to myself what in the hell is he doing? All that talent pissed away by lack of common sense. Sad but true. New album? Sure I'll be happy but not nearly in the same way. Not that Prince gives a rats ass. But he should.

As far as "sharing" being illegal let's cut the shit here. He probably thinks by pulling videos, taking down fansites, and taking legal action that he's creating more of a demand for his material.

Oh well this is just one of hundreds of posts pissing and moaning about the way he operates. It's his life to do whatever the hell he wants. I get that. Problem is that I'm really starting to believe he's more whacked in the head than I thought.

Sorry but the paragraph breaks don't work for me on this site anymore. No clue how other get it to work??? headache

Probably should consider changing my avatar. I don't want the Org to be taking down or me getting sued over it. nuts

I love when stuff like that happens biggrin

Got to agree with Smiggy too. I'm 39 and all this teaser stuff is getting really boring. If there are teasers that result in something sensible, i'm happy, but all this nonsense has finally just become irritating. The video for breakfast, also looks a bit 'make sure you don't show your friends' out of touch.

An album on the other hand of 9 - 12 songs all in one place at one time, now that would be worth getting excited about. I still like the music.

I think some of us still bother because every now and then we see or listen to something we might not have come across for some time - like your A Love Bizarre experience - that just smacks us between the eyes and reminds us of his sheer brilliance !!

A brilliance that as fans for decades we often just take for granted. Take the recent Fallon TV performance for example. Like a recent post and subsequent comments, I too watched that and thought "yep, v. good performance, P ! " but actually upon several repeat watches it just hits you how funkin' cool it was !

His brilliance is easier to appreciate when we do compare to other artists, whether they be his contemporaries or younger artists of today. Take Janelle Monae for example - probably amongst the best of today's artists - even Prince is a fan and tweets links to her TV performances. I watch and try and try to get into her....but it's just not there......when/if compared to Prince.

Sure, I get that she should be enjoyed / appreciated in her own right, but it's hard to not compare when you've experienced something else on an utterly different level. It's like having the very finest wine and then drinking an £8 bottle from Sainsbury's ! Difference being is that no-one in Sainsbury's is suggesting their wine is the new "finest of wines" yet Janelle, Kanye and the like are being mentioned in the same breath as Stevie or Prince - as creative geniuses !! Come on - get real !

I'm not hating on Janelle in any way - I can see she has her image, mission, talent and force and is far better than most "pop" / chart acts, but she is almost 28 - by that age we were on a Parade with Prince - look a the songs, albums, films and tours he had done then - just think about that - simply mindlowing in terms of volume, diversity, quality, passion and integrity. Her voice is nowhere near as good as Prince's (I just can't get into her voice at all - it does nothing for me), her moves are like someone doing 3 of Prince's / JB's many moves......badly......yet she genuinely is a talent of the day.

Bringing me back to why we STILL even bother with Prince - it's because we know so much of his work - too much - we can easily become blaze about it but then we watch The Cross from the Lovesexy Dortmund concert or that strut and dance (in his yellow suit - Detroit 86) as he leaves the organ and hits the centre stage during Mutiny......... and our jaws hit the floor....again !!!

Sure, at 44 teasers for this n that can frustrate and I am sorely pee'd that as a massive fan of almost 30yrs I have to have my laptop to hand a 4am to maybe catch a live stream because he likes it "to be in the moment" !! That is simply ridculous! I think if he is going to do them - and it's really cool he is - as supporters of him do we not deserve the chance to be able to miss the full excitement of not seeing it there and then but still enjoy them the following day or week on one of his online sites/formats ???

But we never had the oportunity for any such surprises / frusrations back in the 80's or 90's because the web etc didn't exist. At least we now know more about upcoming stuff than we did back then. Problem is, with someone like Prince who is spontaneous creating all the time and thus changing his mind about projects, (particularly without the expectsnt hand of a label "guiding" him), we now get to hear of something that he then does a u-turn on....and that change or seeming lack of co-ordinated approach pisses some fans off. It's us and changing technology - the instant / know everything world that pisses us off. Has he really changed?

All of these changes of plans would have happened in the past - whether it be of his or Warners' doing - but we never really knew of them at the time. We just knew when a new song and video and album were released, when concerts were announced and when they would be in store / available to buy.

KEEP RIGHT ON believing !! They'll never be another.....

Just get it sorted out.

Prince is a God on stage and a weirdo off stage.

I wouldn`t want him as a friend, but I would never miss a concert that is in my reach.

Maybe it is not suitable for a pop star to grow up. Sadly his followers have.

Same here. I haven't been motivated to go find a new Prince song since Screwdriver. I'm taking the 'wake me when there's a new album' approach. These days, I only really come to this site to check for news about remasters.

Is this the roughly 10 minute performance by Prince and Sheila backed by expanded Revolution with Gregory and the guys as dancers? That performance is awesome. Pretty much any performance with both Prince and Sheila is gonna be great.

Hell, I consider A Love Bizarre to be a Prince track (in my mind). It's that good.

.

I used to have a footlocker full of Prince paraphernalia. Tour books, bootlegs, magazines, videos, sheet music, metal symbols and stuff like the Batman can and prince gold box. Aside from my SOTT and Lovesexy tour books and a few boots (which are on the rack with everything else), it's all gone.

.

After a while, you find yourself fascinated by new bands who are more "accessible" than Prince and seem to genuinely love the fans.

.

But yes, when I listen to that opening of 17 Days or the first few drum beats of SOTT, I get the same exact experience I did when they first came out. Those are locked into my being for all time -- hopefully when I'm old and gray I can still listen to the SOTT album and remember what it was like being 16 years old again and hearing it for the first time.

.

I think Musicology is the last album that I will have fond memories of. That whole era coincided with a new relationship for me. That was the year of the Grammy performance with Beyonce, the R&RHOF, I saw him in person on the Tonight Show, and finally in concert.

If you look around on line you can find that clip. I have watched it a dozens of times over the last few years. No matter what Prince tries to do (he has the legal right to pull stuff after all none of those sites are paying him or anybody else) performance clips and bootleggs are not going away.

But you have to be looking for it specifically. Yes, I eventually find something - whether on some random Chinese site, random blog, or whatever. But you have to know what you're looking for because you had seen it before and have a hankering to see it again.
What about a new generation of fans? If it's not at all available in the usual innocuous places, not many will ever see these clips.

The younger generation can use this thing called Goggle to find anything the want about Prince. Including album titles and songs. I am tired of young people whining when they actually have to look for something.

^But they have to KNOW the album/song titles in order to look for them! Who else but Prince fans even know about A Love Bizarre? Yet if you search Bob Dylan (my other musical favorite) on youtube you get all sorts of videos from the early 60s until now and a whole lotta cover versions. Now I'm not saying Prince should be like Bob or anybody else, but he is making it hard for young people who think,"Prince? Yeah, I've heared about him, lemme try to find something..." to find anything more than Kiss or Purple Rain.

P is really into image control. He's a control freak. On one end of the spectrum he wants to release his music w/o bootlegs or leaks. That's understandable. On the other end of the spectrum he doesn't want people to release photos or video of him. If I was worth $300 million and had that much talent and that many adoring fans I probably wouldn't care, but I don't know because I am not in that position.

So what. If you are really interest in something you will find out what you need to know.

I did not grow up in a house were anyone listened to Reggae. I stumbled across it on my own before the internet came along and I managed to obtain a lot of Reggae music mostly old school.

I think if as a teenager I could find what I was interested in young people can do the same.

If not then they are not really interested in the first place.
