Just missed the Cut
Crystal Ball 3121 Black Album
[Edited 9/2/13 16:54pm] [Edited 9/2/13 16:54pm] That pretty much covers it. I might change the order of the top 10 a little but not much. And instead of 3121 & TBA, I would put the love symbol and musicology on the just missed the cut list. And I agree about TRC, but ... if you delete the first 3 tracks, it becomes a bearable. Yay! Someone else out there holds "Dirty Mind" as dear as I DO! Besides, it's the album my father stomped up my bedroom stairs, screeched the needle across the record (when he heard "Sister") and busted in 1/2 over his knee! LOL! That's MY #1 TOO and then:

I was smart enough not to play songs like Sister, Head or Jack U Off around my parents. I did make the mistake of watching Purple Rain on VHS when my dad walked into the livingroom when Darling Niki came on. He looked at me, stopped the tape and took it. (I got it back later) "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Great stories. Thankfully my parents never did the same. Of course, the albums that came out when I was in high school were Sign of the Times, Lovesexy, and Batman ... not a lot of shock value there, except for the one album cover of course.

And much later for me, I came on the bandwagon a bit later with Diamonds and Pearls, but when I was 15 that came out and I wa sinto Prince. My parents did not like him as they thought he was gay and a bit too sexual for their liking. Things got worse with Sexy MF, unfortunately living in New Zealand, we are subjected to regular "Moral Panics" of our right wing media.
In Jul 1992, there were news stories about (Their words not mine) "Negro musical artists with obscene lyrics and themes" as a result Delthafunkee homospaien who had a one off hit with Mr Bobdobalina in early 1992 had his ass searched for drugs at the airport and called NZ racist. The Ice T Bodycount album was banned and Princes single was restricted to 16 year olds and over as it contained the "obscene f word". A year later a story had a mother in histrionics when she discovered her 12 year old son listening to Doggystyle and it showed an image of a boombox playing the lyrix "If you give me 10 bitches and I fuck all 10" and a poll showed 98% of the people wanted the music banned for "extremly obscene and influential themes of rape". There was a similar moral panic over "Put them on the glass" by Sirmixalot and until about 1997, sexy and rude rap songs rarely stayed out of the news.

Time for an update after 46 lists, a couple more mavericks ensruing the rise of a few more diverse albums. Now we have 35 albums on the list, no real change with leaders, but the 3rd and 4th places are close now, people are voting in 1999 and forgetting Parade in the process. On the whole theres more movement in the middle albums and the top ones have increased slower than usual.

^^ I loved Planet Earth from the moment I first heard it. I was disappointed with Musicology and even more let down with 3121, so admittedly, my expectations for Planet Earth weren't that high.... but it really exceeded all my expectations.
Where do I start? The title track is beyond epic and is probably the best opening track to any Prince album IMO. Guitar and The One U Wanna C are both masterclasses in pop/rock perfection and would almost certainly be considered all-time Prince classics had they been released 20 years previous. All The Midnights In The World is just a gorgeous simple little ballad, Resolution is cheesy with naive lyrics but the jangly guitars and sweet harmonies redeem it and Chelsea Rodgers is Prince's least contrived funk/disco outing in some time. The only real clunker is Mr Goodnight and even that has "guilty pleasure" status in my book.
Add to that the wonderful memories of the 21 Nights shows and you have on your hands the last truly exciting Prince era. | |

Ok. Sorry. Dont mean to fuck up the official tally count or anything, but Ive been listening to a lot of Prince lately, got back into albums I forgot how good they were (like Parade). Originally, I tried to make a very unbiased list and very by the numbers if you will, but even that wasnt right. Lets be honest, Prince just has way too many good albums and to even limit that down to a top 10 list, yeah, thats obviously not an easy chore. Anyway, I think this might actually be my list. Screw "by the numbers", I had to really take into account the look and feel of the albums and their respective eras as a whole. But thats just me. And this is how much my opinion can change in a week. LOL. I'm glad I asked people their favorite ten, becasue with a couple exceptions (like SomebodysSomebody1985's list) the top five contain pretty musc the same albums... "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

1999 is the best. After that PR. After that it gets difficult. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

For the record, 1999 is the desert island album. If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
