Simon Pegg, The World's End & the dropped Batdance scene

Listened to the Empire (UK film magazine) podcast today. It was a special on the new Edgar Wright film, The World's End. Anyway, during an interview Simon Pegg mentioned that they'd discussed filming a scene where his character would mime to the entirety of Batdance in a pub. Astutely, they summised that P wouldn't have let them use the track.

I'm guessing it was a knowing reference to the LP throwing scene in Sean of the Dead (which always makes me smile)
All of my hang-ups have gone. How I wish you felt the same.

Interesting, would P really have had a say though, doesn't WB still have Batman?

I'm no expert, but these kind of things still need Prince's permission (It's a publishing issue I guess?) Otherwise don't you think WB would put that back catalog to work?!

Ah ok, wasn't sure if P had any say whatsoever over the WB catalogue.

On The Voice here a couple of girls did the worst resisting of Purple Rain, and I have noticed that another one of those talent/singing shows is doing another of P's songs on Sunday night, I am guessing they don't need his permission to perform the songs.

I'll claim the same no-expertise, but I thought Prince didn't have a say on Batman stuff and that was the reason that there's never anything from that album included in Best Of albums. Even with his stuff, wasn't he upset that Baby I'm A Star was used in a Target commercial a while ago? I don't see him giving permission for that. All this legal stuff makes my head hurt.

It has to do with the actors' voices used throughout the album. To use them on another release, those actors would have to get a cut. The deal for the Batman album is already in place from 1989.

That's why he used only B-sides on The Hits, and only the guitar riff from Batdance on Purple Medley.

I understand it as Prince has say in the batman stuff but so does WB. If anyone nixed it i bet it was prince. I hope they put it on the exras sans music... (that is if it was fillmed)

But there is an issue with the songs being tied to the movie.

and trivia! what sample from the Batman movie/album was used in a latter in a offical relaased prince song and what as the song?

really? I never noticed that. What part?

I was thinking of one of the mixes of "Thieves in the Temple" (i think Thieves in the House") has the joker's laugh.

I didn't know your reference either! I'll have to check it out later.

In New Power Generation, before the more urgent "pardon us for caring" verse, there's a part that goes like this:

Small keyboard progression
"We Are The New"
*sound like 2 swords sliding against each other* (sounds like shoo-shoo-shee-shoo)

It's that sword part that is from Batman. The scene where the Asian swordsman makes a dramatic show in front of Batman, and Batman dismisses him with a front kick.
