"Glam Slam" (music video)

Was it filmed in the tent on the grounds of Paisley Park, where he held a one-off (professionally filmed) performence? ...

If all the footage is of that quality I would dearly love to see it!!

I so love this video clip. And it's a shame I never saw it in 1988 whe it was current, although I watched MTV day and night.

Dumbfounded that the single and video weren't huge hits for Prince. shrug

No. The video was filmed on the 7th May, the gig in the tent was on the 15th September.

I remember reading a blurb in the Star Tribune that extras were treated to a performance after the filming of the video, with Prince taking audience requests.

There was indeed a performance after the video shoot. http://www.princevault.co..._May,_1988

Would have been nice to attend such an intimate show.

I love the video, but I can see why the song wasn't a huge hit. It's just not a very exciting song. The title track should have been the second single, but that's another thread lol

It fits perfectly within Lovesexy, but as a stand alone single perhaps not.
Apparently Prince tried to withdraw it's release but was unable to.
I wonder if he had another song in mind to replace it. I would have loved him to go the whole hog and release the title track. The mind boggles when imagining the 12" remixes!

Actually, the title track was the song he originally chose for the second single! There were even remixes completed for the 12",but he changed his mind at the last minute and picked "Glam Slam" instead nuts

Agree with that. Great track, but an uncommercial single choice, or at least not particularly suitable to follow up Alphabet St.

Would've picked these for the singles:

Alphabet St.

Lovesexy

I Wish U Heaven

Anna Stesia / When 2 R In Love

Not sure. I don't know if the band that was using the soundstage at the time of the tent concert had their own stage set up or not.

Seems like they were filming a Muppets movie there at the time. Might be thinking of another time though...not sure.

Have read that after filming the video Prince took requests from the crowd.

Don't know if the cameras kept rolling though??

... also great fun to see both Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss playing the violin in this video ! wink

Just love this great high class performance of Prince and The Band.

I think it's also one of the few life performance videos where we can clearly see band members singing, like Dr. Fink, Bony Boyer, Sheila E...
-
Great song by the way.

Just a two minutes classic single with lyrics and then, a very long (1:30) extended synth solo added. Quite bizarre if you think about it being released as a single.

-

By the way, what happened to Miko Weaver ?

I notice that,in the video, they omitted the entire 'middle' part of the song, where Prince is saying alot of nonsensical stuff like "soda fizzin' on the lawn...come a butterfly straight on your skin" lol

I read something from Eric about that part in the video, they didn't really play violin

The title track of Lovesexy is massively overrated on this forum. From a songwriting point of view it's probably the least impressive song on the album. The melody is nothing. If you heard that chorus being sung acapella you'd quickly see how clumsy it is. And the synth riff is a contrived attempt to repeat the excitement of 1999. He's pulling the same trick, but it just doesn't work as well. The beat's good and I like all the weird tricks with the voices at the end, but the basic song is not in the same league as most of the rest of the album (that includes "Glam Slam").

"Glam Slam" features the album's blandest melody. As a single, that song didn't stand a chance on pop radio in 1988.The title track is dynamic...everything you would expect from a Prince single. It's raunchy, danceable, provocative and infectious. There's just no way it would have failed as a single.

Please. I've got news for you. The quality of a song is not what determines a song's success or failure in the charts. Prince had been on a downward slope of popularity ever since '85. It was only Batman (his weakest album in over a decade) that put him back on top. You are way, way too obsessed with charts anyway. Who gives a fuck what chart position it achieved? GS is a far, far better song than many of the songs which were hits at the time.

I agree, even though I love Lovesexy the song, It's not a strong Title cut,

Positivity to me is one of the strongest cuts on the album
