The reason for no reMASTERs MASTER is in the word remaster ....

But my understanding is that the HD remasters have been done with Prince approval?

wether or not prince knows about or approved the HD releases, i don't think he would finally start releasing remasters this way. . there's still a lot of money to be made from remastering all of his album and a project like that would at the very least get a lot of promotion/word of press. . if anything he could get a good deal somewhere shopping the remasters about for distribution on cd. especially if he would be adding some bonus material, which he has more than enough of.

That's my understanding also. I'm satisfied with the HDTracks issues so far. They sound really good. I would still like remastered reissues with deluxe packaging. I don't have to have bonus material, but it would be nice to have the single versions, b-sides and 12in mixes all on one package for each album.

Like everything else he's released in the last 10+ years, more than likely any remaster will be highly compressed and/or hard limited and/or brickwalled. In other words they will sound like dross. Buy the original vinyl or 1st pressed CDs and be happy.

More than likely any physical remasters will come via kobalt deal. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

TyphoonTip you say "1st pressed CDs" Could you explain your thoughts on this? Thanks.

He's got to own the master recordings for that to happen. I don't think he owns them yet. The HD Tracks reissues of "For You" states it's still owned by WB/Rhino. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Less and less each year. We should now be on the third round of remasters: - first one should have been straightforward remasters: the albums, but remastered with care, using the latest technology. - second one is those same or improved remasters of the albums plus bonus tracks (remixes, Bsides, outtakes,...), perhaps including a DVD of the videos plus some unreleased stuff. - third batch would include deluxe packages which would include an entire concert from that era, more outtakes, perhaps a reproduced tour book, etc. All including HD audio of course, for those that want it. And deluxe vinyl.
(Note that I did not mention 5.1 mixes: most of the time these are a waste of time unless you're the likes of Pink Floyd. I'd rather see that energy go to proper remasters. Moreover, Prince never showed much interest in that kind of thing. Listening to his recent output I'd even say: au contraire.)
Prince could have been raking in the money each time, while preserving his legacy (instead of tarnishing it with releases that are at best instantly forgettable or insultingly awful).
Hell, we could be at a fourth round. Imagine: unreleased album projects, e.g. Dream Factory or Crystal Ball etcetera. Not to mention the dozens of associated artists sets: I wouldn't mind a The Family box set, deluxe The Time releases, Jill Jones with all the trimmings, etcetera. Or how about Purple Rain before it had to be trimmed down, e.g. a full-length "Computer Blue",...?
Or look at Nirvana, whose In Utero is soon to be re-released in a NEW MIX! Why not release a version of Parade where you can add or remove Clare Fischer's parts? Or a Lovesexy that sounded closer to the album Eric or Alan Leeds raved about?
Or how about something alike to what Peter Gabriel did on the recent deluxe box set of So, where there was one disc that showed the evolution of a song from demo to final mix (although I doubt such archive material is even available WRT Prince, since plenty of times there was no real demo)?
Less and less. Each year there are less music mags, each year the people most likely to spend money on this kind of release are fewer and fewer.
Should have happened long ago (as part of a deal with WB to regain the rights to his masters), ain't gonna happen soon. © Bart Van Hemelen

you're quite right bart. i truly wish things would have happened the way you described them above. it's really a sad state of affairs, prince's 'legacy'. . on a sidenote: Parade without the clare fisher parts. i suppose you did get the parade testpressing that was released a while ago, right? it's the one that has "others here with us" and "all my dreams" and "old friends 4 sale" on it. the early configuration of the album. the soundquality is very good and it's all pre-clare fisher orchestration. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Bart--
You are absolutely right. That's what we should have gotten--and that Parade idea would have been great. I'd like to hear what all Fisher had put on those tracks. The "I Wonder U" full orchestration that made the rounds was certainly interesting.

This is all Yahoo's fault. At least I think it was them, or another Internet giant, that waived around a $10-100 million dollar or so offer for the rights to stream Prince's music and videos about 10 years ago. Supposedly he refused. Now he's sitting on that bish hoping another big payday comes in. That's the main reason I think why he blocks so much Youtube content. I think he wants them to pay him. Meanwhile his career is pretty much unknown and inaccessible to most teens, tweens and 20-somethings.

Never heard about the bolded part.
I do agree that Prince is pretty inaccessible for young people, which is really a shame...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I totally agree with you here, Bart, this is the way things should have been done... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Is there any truth to the rumour that he re-recorded his entire back catalogue??
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This shit about what we should have had, is nice and all, but nobody is giving any REASONS WHY we didn't. Or maybe he simply doesn't want to give fans what they want anyway. Perhabs it is all about control and profit. Or perhabs it is not all about that. Perhabs WB and associated artists play their part too. Or perhabs even others. Nobody is really getting into that. Just the same old complaining of what could have been, if only....

rap said: Is there any truth to the rumour that he re-recorded his entire back catalogue?? He said he did. That means it's not a rumor. It also means it's probably less likely to be true than a rumor.

Your take makes perfect sense, therefore it won't happen! How big is the market for Prince's remasters? Like you said, less and less each year. Most of the music-buying public downloads their music and listens to it on earbuds or in their car. Not exactly the best place to hear the subtle nuances brought out by remastering. Us older folk already have the stuff and may buy one or 2 of the remastered stuff, but really, the only ones who will be all the remasters are the hardcore fans, and who knows how much sales we're worth!
