Why does he tour before a new album? 2013 was supposed to be big. We are getting a tour and let's hope he hits the east coast soon. We got a lot of social media. But the year is almost over and we still dont have an album. The live performances and social media blitz will be winding down before we get an album, which has never made sense to me. I know we are getting some new songs here and there, but most of those songs are nice but are not album worthy. Release it.

Interesting cos I was thinking the same. Last few album that have dropped before a tour he has hardly played, but this time other way round. Lots of new songs an no album yet. I kinda get a gold experience feel when lots of new tracks were heard live and the album didnt get released for a while.

. I think it was after Lovesexy, starting with GB Nude tour that he started touring before an album released, and it seems to be almost consistent through his career after. . In the 1980s prior to an album he would feature or perform songs coming on next album, and sometimes, nothing until the album rel and then followed by tour. . Prince(album) - Lovesexy a lot of unreleased songs and new songs performed.

Not a criticism, just a fact, and not just for Prince.

Yes, it's money. As much as Prince loves music, he seems to love money even more. Very sad.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well he has people to pay, so it's probably not as much about loving one over the other, videos musicians technicians, stage hands, etc

I'm not saying one or the other. I'm saying that if you are not doing a greatest hits tour, then release the album and tour behind it. The 3rdEyeGirl tour has been on the cutting edge compared to recent tours and it makes no sense to not have an album behind it.
In other words an album and a tour would rake in even more money because they woujld both promote each other. The casual fan is looking for a new album to buy after they see him. The west coast casual fans are much more likely to buy the new album if it was out when he was out there.

apart from an album or new music (P or 3rd Eye Girl), i think it would be cool to sell a Cd at the concerts (it would A. make money on it's own, B. Make some people go to the concerts just to get the album, C. He could use up the songs he's not putting on an album - the Reloaded cuts for instance could be made into a live studio album. Diamonds and Pearls tour was after the album dropped, and also had new songs Sexy MF, Damn U, and My Name Is Prince. Act 1 was after dropped, and had Peach and sometimes songs off Gold Nigga and Come. That 80's trend continued into the early 90s. TRUE BLUE

All musicians have people to pay, even those with less financial resources than Prince, and they aren't as obsessed with money as Prince.

You state "all musicians have people to pay....they aren't as obsessed by money as Prince".
I disagree!
1 - The Rolling Stones charged up to £1000 per ticket for their O2 shows last December. They are musicians. Therefore, logic dictates that some musicians are as obsessed by money as Prince. 2 - Prince himself has stated "money don't matter 2 nite"
Seriously though, what wrong with someone looking out for themselves financially - be it you, I or Prince?

OK, this is my opinion: Prince is giving more importance now to playing live than to recording because he sees that the money in the music industry nowadays is in the live venues and not in the recording studios. I see it like that and that hurts me, because the last Prince album dates from 2010. What we are getting these days are songs totally disconnected and available only for download, that aren't part of a consistent artistic project. So: I'd love to have an album and I guess financial reasons are behind him postponing it time and time again. ------- Like I said, this is only the way I see it. ------- And yes, I think Prince is particularly obsessed with money, as can be seen in the way he treats his former protegés, or even his own fans. So I don't see nothing wrong in looking out for oneself financially, but I think Prince's case is somewhat pathological.

Well Prince did say in interviews for Emancipation that one of the things he was a slave to was the idea you had to make an Album
I think the idea of a consistent artistic project is sometimes something that was enforced upon him for financial reasons... .It's cheaper to relase an album than 10 singles with physical releases. That's no longer true with digital distribution.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
....which I suppose is my original point - playing live is the only way to generate serious money in the music industry nowadays...and the corelation of this is that the album - in the sense of the concept I've grown up with - is increasingly redundant in todays world.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, there are people making fantastic albums nowadays, although they can't make so much money with them as before. That makes me wonder: why Prince has spent three years without releasing one, considering his usually prolific output? Because he can't make a great album, or because of financial reasons? What I argue here is that it would be sad if the reasons were financial, since, like I said, awesome albums are released these days every single week, by people maybe not as financially obsessed as Prince.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well maybe it's neither... Maybe he didn't want to release an album but had some songs he wanted out. Before you would have to release them in the format of an album for financial reasons (even if they didn't fit together) but now he doesn't

isnt it just that he wants to keep trying new avenues to release his musioc and see how well it does...its not becasue he cant release great music or wont

i can barely see myself ever paying prince for a new record again .. i certainly wont be buying any mp3's even if they don't suck .. i think it is great he is not releasing much official recorded music .. ideally he will test new songs out either via his website or live before he puts together a new cd .. i am hoping he is acknowledging that he needs a strong return if he is gonna do a record .. and not another collection of ideas hastily finished with a few modern tricks thrown in to make him seem in touch .. some of what 3rd eye girl does is great .. i really love their version of so far so pleased .. or their jamming guitar on sign o the times .. even the max is kinda fun .. the originals tho .. just suck .. i think a really great live record with reinterpretations of some underappreciated recent jems would do him will with the 3rd eye group .. hopefully the singles will sell so poor they never find their way on a cd and hopefully prince will keep testing the waters till he finds his mojo again ..
a live cd would be welcome with
dance electric mutiny dark extraloveable people pleaser so far so pleased sign o the times she's always in my hair old friends for sale big city act of god colonized mind the max question of u / u will be with me
somethin like that .. but realistically it would be something horrible like
days of wild dreamer bambi cause and effect screwdriver fix ur life up lay down endorphine machine and some horrible honky tonk piano reinterpretation of electric chair or something in the water
but yeah .. hoping it is so he can weed out the bad songs for the next record cuz we need a good one from him this time with all this waiting going on

because there's gonna be 3 albums released. 1 from 3rd Eye Girl, 1 from NPG, and 1 from Prince.
all featuring the expertise of Prince, but he will be more in the background on the 3EG/NPG releases.

Well he said he wasn't going to record at all, so keep that in mind.
In actuality, bands used to tour to work out new material, or would start playing out new songs live during the previous albums tour.
Prince did that with Purple Rain, and Parade, didn't he?
Around the World, and Cherry Moon didn't get dedicated tours either, if I'm not mistaken.
