The very idea that prince is releasing 'singles' doesn't really apply right now. He's got a website selling some music, the songs have some artwork with them. Sometimes he releases a video for download as well. Before that he released the occasional song on itunes. His last single was Rock n Roll Love Affair and all the heavy lifting to make that a single was done by the record company who presumably just threw a wad of cash at him. The last REAL prince single.... Fury? Guitar?

A single is a single, back in 1980 some indie bands released 7" independently, sold them locally or at concerts, there was virtually no promotion, and still you'll find them on Discogs as singles, and they'll be considered as such on Wiki if these bands knew a later success and have a Wiki entry. To avoid the physical vs. digital debate, we can take singles such as "2gether" or "Supercute" or "NYC" (the 97 cassette): they were sold only at concerts and/or thru the website, and at the time of release Supercute and the few other singles released alongside weren't related to any album (TCI and The Slaughterhouse were released much later) and nonetheless they are now considered singles. I keep that position that an album is an album even if it wasn't released thru traditionnal channels (20ten) and that a song that's released on its own or with only one or 2 other songs packed with it is a single no matter if it's a CD, 7"", cassette or digital file. If not we'd have to find a whole new definition: if Breakfast Can Wait and the other recent songs aren't singles, then they're certainly not albums or EP's either, so what are they? They aren't "nothing" are they? They do exist. So technically they're singles. Independent singles with a low profile and virtually no promotion but singles nonetheless. So of course if Prince starts releasing one every 2 weeks that's gonna be a hell lots of singles by the 1980's standards but hell, John Zorn or Bill Laswell release an album every 2 months or so (on CD's) and still they're considered albums.

Nah you've absolutely got a point but I still don't consider downloads like this as 'singles', they're just tracks to me. There's an entire cultural meaning inherent in a single that's lost imho. But at the end of the day IT'S ABOUT THE MUSIC MAAAN so it doesn't really matter

Thing is, with the current business model of music, in a world where u can buy any track of an album separately, singles don't exist in the same way they did. What makes a single now? I'd tend to say that what makes the visibility of a song is having a promo video on YT, and that more and more often happening to album tracks that never get released as proper singles. It's confusing and it's gonna be more and more confusing. It's very likely that more and more tracks won't be released as proper sngles anymore, because the cost of a single CD equals the cost of an album (but can't be sold for the same price) and because any album song can now be purchased on its own in its digital version. What we may keep having is non-album tracks being released as singles or EP's, and album tracks not being available separately (physically) unless they get a collector vynil treatment. So the question is: what will our children call a single in 20 years? Only they can answer that question and that won't be before a while. In the meantime we are free to call songs tracks or singles, I'll give u that, as as u say it doesn't really matter as long as we get the MUSIC
