Remember that interview with Bryant Gumbel. Gumbel was asking P and Mayte about reincarnation and Mayte said there was a connection between her and P in Egypt. I think P said that they were the same person in Egypt in a previous life.

Someone confirm that?

Wow, I forgot he fronted like that. But, she could've passed you know. smile A long time ago I asked a classmate a question about a spanish word, and she told me that she was Egyptian. Prince seems to like the exotic-looking types.

I remember watching a clip about Mayte and she was on the "That's Incredible" show when she was like 8 or 9 years old. Anyways she was dressed up like a little belly dancer and was balancing a huge sword on top of her head. So she was into all this middle eastern stuff since then. I think they mentioned that her dad was in the army and her family was staioned in the middle east so this is maybe where she picked this up?

I think Prince obviously likes women of a light skin tone - Vanity, Mayte, Cat, Sheila, Mani

Maybe he feels threatened by dark Black women, and inferior to White women?

Make her seem 'exotic' in some way, but that's not a good reason anyway...rolleyes

Maybe he liked to think that just for fun, you never know, and just wanted Prince fans to play along! biggrin

Cause at the time,

He was leaving Egypt!

(metaphorically speaking: Book of Exodus in the bible)

I always thought that was pretty plain after hearing the words from the song "7".

Look at it this way:

Bellydancing (particularly classical, which was the form Mayte specialized in) originated largely in Egypt and the surrounding countries.

Whenever you participate in an artform that is deeply imbedded in a certain culture, you inevitably immerse yourself into an appreciation of that culture to a degree.

It's a schtick and an image that helps perpetuate your aura as a performer. Bellydancers VERY often adopt Arabic stagenames to perpetuate the image and the exotica.

Michael Flatley (that Lord of The Dance/Riverdance guy) isn't actually Irish, you know. He DOES, however, adopt that persona as a performer.

The "crown princess of Cairo" character that Mayte played on the eek(+>: album was just that: a character.

Besides, Prince has twisted and bended the truth and contradicted himself so many times about his OWN ethnicity in interviews and such over the years, hasn't he?

Yeah but still it doesn't give him the right 2 play with some1 roots smile

LOL I wish he presnted "The Princess Of Cairo" as a "character" tho,,it would be alright in HIS music but in real life and interviews?? Sounds a bit corny and disrespecful 4 her and her family wink

Overall, I kinda see yo point.

It was part of his fantasy that she was an Egyptian Princess.
Also he said he met Mayte when she was only 16.
No other had had her and he molded her into what he wanted her to be like in the Greek myth Pygmalion. He does seem to like 'em young.

Exactly. He named Carmen Electra "Carmen" (she chose "Electra") Also, he named Vanity, (he wanted to call her Vagina (gee-na).

Naming something or creating a fantasy so that it will be your own reality is practiced by many people.

Why do some people have to make things so complicated?
It's pretty obvious that the Egyptian thing was centered around the 3 Chains Of Gold act.
I heard early on that Mayte is Puerto Rican and Black.
No big mystery.
But I guess when there's no new Prince news, everything is a conspiracy. lol
Also, since Prince is light skinned, it's no big deal that most of the women he's dated/married have been light skinned. Actually, I think Mani is a little bit darker than Prince.
Oh my God. The horror. The horror. lol

Wonder what was Prince opinion on all the mesapatanians (I know I spelled that wrong) If that was any of his interest at all...

he was really interested in pyramids... why was his interest high in the egyptians at one time (I think he still is)

WTF?!?
Why can't it just be that he likes a certain type of woman?
Everyone has a type or types. I get so sick of people judging someone because they like a certain thing.
Let me ask you a question, Why is that the 1st thing a person of color says when they feel discriminated against is "we are all the same on the inside"? But when you see a brother dating a white woman or anything other than black you go nuts? Isn't that racist?
Be like water my friend.

The way I see it, you're the only one who made this thing complictad. Being Puerto Rican doesn't have anything to do with being Arabic and I've neva mentioned anything about his "dates" or their races in this thread.

I simply asked why did he fronted about her roots, was that complicated? eek
