That needs to be a whole song

Have you ever found yourself saying that when Prince changes directions in a song? The section of "3 Chains O' Gold" that starts with "You say you'll call me..." is a perfect example. It's such a beautiful piece of music; I'd love to hear it developed into a whole song. The same goes for the end of "Dolphin."

What are some snippets of songs you feel should be a song unto itself?

I love songs that has multiple movements. It keeps the listening experience more engaging & fun.

My choice would be when he let loose at the end of "Good Love" when he yells "Thats how I like it, c'mon".

Maybe he tried and didn't know how to finish it or felt it was not good enough so he decided to mix it all together which would explain why this so-called rock opus is such a mess.

I also love when Prince records suite-like songs with several parts. It's one of the things that puts him in a category beyond what most pop artists do or are even capable of doing.

However, it doesn't always work. Songs like "Crystal Ball," "All My Dreams" and even "Joint 2 Joint" manage to stay interesting without sounding indulgent, whereas "Love 2 the 9's," halfway through, goes horribly awry. Simplicity would have benefitted that song so much more than trying to incorporate every thing including the kitchen sink!

I think that ending of Circle Of Amour with that sweet, sweet melody feels like its just put in there and left forgotten. I would love if a own song got developed with that melody in the chorus or something. Love 2 the 9's, to me is a very interesting song. Just shows you what a genius Prince is in his music-making. 2 song put into 1 and it's still (to me,anyway razz )interesting and funky. ( Just love how he goes back to the starting melody in the end.

I agree about "Love 2 the 9's". However, I would have supressed all the Tony M-Arabia bullshit. Well, maybe not completely bullshit, but it shouldn't be on this particular song. Without it, the track would be among my ten favourite Prince songs, no doubt.

And good point about "Circle Of Amour".

Not a good introduction of Mayte, I would say

It was a period in his career where he over-produced his music, and while I agree that it took away some of the charm & simplicity, the essence is still there. I can imagine how great this song would sound in its infant stages.

I assume he was attempting to present his own "Bohemian Rhapsody" with that song, who knows.

I had to listen to "Love 2 the 9's" again and I could still do without the change up. Perhaps it would've worked better (for me) with a purely instrumental section in the middle and then pick back up with "...Would you hug me on a crowded street..." I still love the song though.

I would love to hear where Prince went with Sexuality. That tantalising drum snippet during the fade out suggests the song still had more jism in it.

Bravo, I totally agree with you! It's a question of how organically the parts are connected.
Most of Prince's new material sucks at it. It sounds like different sections put together instead of the natural flow of a song.
