I was wtaching Purple rain today agin for the first time in about a year, and I was reading an old Org thread about funny shit in it. Someone called Miss Pickles drew my attention to a part at 24 minutes in, showing Dez Dickersons group doing their song "Modernaire".

The guitarist in the red suit next to Dez is clearly faking it, he does some crazed air guitar and nearly drops it, he is doing everything to this guitar (Which I suspect is a Fender Stratocaster) except playing it. It funny and sad all in one.

Does anyone else also see it and find it funny, its a shame as Dez and his bassist to the left are clearly playing their instruments. I have a new funniest moment in the movie, this guy over does the chord changes on the fretstock and nearly drops it. How did it get into the movie??

What do y'all think of it, did anyone know the name of this cat and wether he could play his guitar or not.

No one in the movie is actually playing. All of the performance scenes were lip-synced.

Fine, they were "mimed" to the pre-existing studio/live recordings.

I think you're reffering to Oliver Leiber. Oliver is badass guitar player, currently on tour with fDeluxe. That seen was just Oliver being his "crazy" self. He is a bit of a manic, even with the guitar!!!

Oliver brought the Funky Minnesota Prince sound to Paula Abdul, launching her to stardom with the hits "Forever Your Girl," "The Way That You Love Me" and "Opposites Attract." These days, he's writing songs for the likes of Adam Lambert and Ke$ha. If his name looks strangely familiar, that's because his dad is Jerry Leiber of the famous songwriting team Leiber & Stoller. We'll get into that later... it's complicated.

He was also in the band Tamara & The Seen (first guy under the letter M).
