From Metro Weekly: Prince's "Lovesexy" album revisited: 25 years later

I'm in awe that this album is 25 years old! Love every aspect of it. This is a great article detailing all aspects of the album, especially the status of his career. Check it out...

Prince should have been riding high towards the end of 1987. He had ended his association with backing band The Revolution the previous year, immersed himself in the studio, and the resulting double album - “Sign o’ The Times” – was universally hailed by critics as a triumph. It was also a commercial success, yielding three Top 10 hits in America: the stark, socially-conscious title track, the funky duet with Sheena Eason “U Got the Look”, and the searing guitar-rocker “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man.” “Sign o’ The Times” even earned a nomination for an Album of the Year Grammy. Prince and his band had enjoyed a successful summer tour in Europe in support of the album, and in America he released an acclaimed concert film in select theaters. In early December 1987 he was set to drop an underground-type funk album that was to appear mysteriously all in black, with no credits or label. Dubbed “The Black Album,” the project was generating significant buzz. (Article continues)

Wow. We have a writer here who actually knows that eye No was based on The Ball. Excellent piece. Lovesexy was a hype in Europe and a flop in the US. So be it. I guess one HAS to be a Prince fan to dig it. I'll never get tired of showing my love for this one. Prince at the top of his powers. Unbeatable.

As much as I love Lovesexy, I can remember baing confused by it as a 17 year old. Whereas being younger, I was conscious of Prince's spiritual passions, with Lovesexy, for the first time, I sensed a leaning towards religious or preaching vibe. Eye Know baffled me. As with previous releases, Lovesexy should be viewed in the context of the time and amongst Prince's entire catalog. As for me, I understand the myriad of vibrations and accept Prince for who he is. We're all on the same groove foundation just at different points; it's important we accept others for where they are, as we grow at our paces.

Glam Slam is one of my favorite songs!

Great read. I'll have to give my untracked version the full listen this article begs that it deserves. I was never able to spot the "don't buy the black album" msg in the A-St. video. This tour was also great!

Great review of a fantastic album! I would also advise to listen to the Peach & Black review of Lovesexy, it is spot on (though a little more love for Positivity would be in order smile

Great article.

But...

Prince has often straddled the line between sexuality and spirituality in his music, trying to marry love of God with the ecstasy of sex. “Anna Stesia” is the ultimate expression of this tension."

I have to disagree with the end of this sentence. Since Anna Stesia is my all time favorite Prince song, I do not hear any tension between sexuality and spirituality, in this masterpiece. Yet every review I have ever read about this song, is always off the mark in some shape or form. Whether they do not understand the song altogether, or it's a little miss, like above...people just do not fully understand this track. I guess it just goes to prove, everyone hears everything, different than everyone else.

It seems people would rather look for some strange, mystical meaning into it, as opposed to what the song is actually about... achieving spiritual enlightenment.

You need to listen to it again - especially the line

Have you ever wanted to be with someone so much you'd take anyone boy or girl?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So let me get this straight...even though that line is NOT sexual, you have interpreted it to be sexual?

Thank you for the clarification. Now I see why people do not understnad this song.

Kind of presumptious there about the meaning LovesexyIsThe1. It can be taken a lot of ways.

Overall to me it's about loneliness.

Fair enough. For me personally, it is a song about overcoming loneliness, through spiritual enlightenment.

I have always felt the lyrics were straightforward about this, (but again) thanks to Genesia, I see how people can take the opening verse to mean different things.

If there were additional lyrics throughout the song that said something along the lines of: 'I want to have sex, for the glory of God,' then I could agree with that sentence in this review. That would make it more obvious the song is about tension between sexuality and spirituality. Since the song does not include any lyrics even remotely similar, I have always taken the actual lyrics and their meaning, at face value.

Holy mackeral, the author of that article got me revved up to go listen to "Lovesexy" again from start to finish.

-

I was on board with this album from the day I bought it. I must have listened to it five hundred times that summer, as I barreled through a questionable and stressful period of my life and prepared to enter my last year of college. And then it continued to give all through the next year.

-

I preached about "Lovesexy" until I was blue in the face. I don't know if I ever converted or convinced anyone, but to me, it didn't matter. I loved it.

Thanks for the nice comments all. I appreciate them. Interesting discussion about "Anna Stesia." I view it as a moment of crisis and epiphany - his "save me Jesus, i've been a fool.. how could I forget that you are the rule?". And a defintite attempt to reconcile the sexual and spiritual ("maybe i'll learn to love her - i mean the right way - i mean the only way - perhaps you can show me baby")

But the meaning is certainly open to interpretation. I think we can all agree (or mostly, anyway) that it is one of his finest moments. "Lovesexy" has always fascinated me as an album and I'm glad I was able to do a piece about it. Thanks for reading!
