1)Maybe it's the painting from "When Doves Cry" Video. I think the artwork is in The "Purple Rain" CD booklet as well.

2)Gemeni symbolism.

3)It's just himself.

I'm not sure what these lyrics mean to him personally and exactly. It may be because I have not lived his life.

I will say that this song continues his revelation to his listeners that "all that glitters ain't Gold".
[this notion continues through "Emancipation" CD in the songs, "White Masion", "Style", "Slave", and maybe "My Computer"]

One eyes stares forward defiantly focusing on the next "game", woman, jam, influence, material toys, hip style...

This "eye" also looks out for ones more immediate gain. Short-term love. Instant self-gratification is sought in the form of fame, money, popularity, ego, etc..

This stern "eye" probably represents this "half" of Prince that failed to acknowledge and deal with issues that eventually brought more problems than long-term pleasure..

Look at the video.. I've only viewed it once or twice. I'm sure that Kirk Johnson and Morris Hayes were pulling Prince away from a bar full of drinks. It seemed as if they were concerned, but he was in some sort of denial..or refusal

People can make assumptions, but Prince knows for sure.

Look in The Emancipation CD Booklet. Prince seem to give little hints on songs such as "Holy River". He does so in the prince CD Booklet.

There was another recent topic of this song... You may want to search for it.

Prince has/had a painting of his eye in Paisley Park.
It's in the video, although briefly.
I also caught a glimpse of it during the Oprah
interview.

"U can still see the picture upon the wall
1 eye staring at nothing at all,
The other one trying to focus thru all u're tears"

A story of a mans interstruggle with himself...
God is the answer...

Beautiful song!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
