Are these albums classics?: For You and Prince...

My hypothesis is, YES. ABSOLUTELY, YES!

Are they classics, or merely a prodigy flexing his youthful chops?

^ Agree! Never really got into these albums. They haven't aged very well either, imo.

agreed. there are some cool songs on "for you" but i hardly ever listen to

it as a whole.

but "prince" is a classic, imo. good from start to finish and lots of great

songs that fit in well with his setlists to this very day.

I've never really got into "for you", but "prince" is one of my favourite albums of all time, so in my eyes it is certainly a classic!

It's classic in the sense it lays down what was to evolve into The Minneapolis Sound. I listened the other day and was quite surprised just how inventive it was.

What stood out for people with "For You" was "produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince". It inspired other musicians to lock themselves in a room and play all the parts, even though McCartney and Stevie had already been known for recording most of the album themselves, but it took them a decade before they were able to.

If "Songs in the Key of Life" hadn't happened, hard to say if Prince would have been able to pull off "For You" the way he did, or SOTT for that matter.

They are *to me*. wink

I heart the vocal layering, and harmony. It sounds beautiful. I love it when Prince does his own background.

Great introductions to Prince. But Dirty Mind is the first true classic for me.

No...

clas·sic

[klas-ik] Show IPA
adjective Also, classical (for defs 1–5, 8, 10).
1.
of the first or highest quality, class, or rank: a classic piece of work.
Competent works, laying the groundwork for the greater glories that were to come and containing some classic moments....but, as bodies of work, neither (in my opinion!) compare to DM/1999/PR/Parade/SOTT.

The question is more: does Prince own the master of 'For You', and by next year the master of 'Prince'?

Prince is my fav album-it is the first album that you really hear prince's vocal ability. It is a classic cd with some of his best songs on it.
