Prince & swearing!

Can anyone tell me the last song recorded that prince actually swears? I understand he stopped all that along time ago...

June of 2006 at the Webby Awards when he accepted an award and played "Don't Play Me" and sung the entire song including the word "ass". And this was years into his faith as a JH.

"Ass" is not a swear word.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Uhm, "Shoo-bed-ooh"? He says "bitch" in it in a way that I think counts as swearing.

I don't really remember if there was any cursing on the NPGMC tracks.

"U Make My Sunshine" was one of the later-later ones.

The "not swearing" is silly... for all his wacky ideas (chemtrails, "illusion of time"), he sure puts lot of weight on random combinations of English letters.

Plus it's a cop out to "pretend swear", like in 1+1+1=3 - we all know what you're saying, so just say it.

Nah

there is a version lifted from an exclusive radio play and they blank "ass" out from it.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Prince began talking about not swearing in late 1997.

Around the same time he began prefacing "The Cross" with a speech that questioned whether Jesus really died on a cross at all (JW teaching), although he kept playing it live.

By early 1998 the Cross was now The Christ and he claimed he was "off swearing".

Crystal Ball was assembled before early 1998 so there are plenty of expletives on that; NPS has "bitch" and "ass" and "damn".

These are probably the answer to your question.

The last song I recall is Sadomasochistic Groove July 2001, there is a dub on the offending part when it was released in 2004 on The Slaughterhouse.

.

I dont really care much if he doesn't swear anymore, though I do have an issue with revisionist lyrics.

If there are songs that he doesn't want to sing anymore due to explicit lyrics great, but dont go singing "23 scriptures in a one night stand" or "duck".

The original art as it was developed should not be retouched under any circumstances considering the efforts that he went to back in the day to not be censored.

This holds even truer when talk of any eventual remasters is bandied about.

.

Towards the end of the 80's the gangsta rappers had hit with ferocious lyrics, Prince increasingly swore on his released material though he was never going to be able to keep up with them.

...and to be frank why would you want to, it's not like he was from the hood. (...even if Tony M gave him heaps of street cred pimp2 falloff )

.

.

Prince really only started swearing consistently on his released songs from early 90's. There was Let's Pretend we're married and the B-sides Irrestible Bitch, Erotic City as exceptions, Black Album recorded in 87 released in 94. (may have missed a couple more)

It was more lyrics on sex rather than swearing that gained him his notoriety as a non-conformist, ultimately resulting in the foundation of the PMRC.

.

As we get older our perspectives change, and to me the context that it is used is important too.

Personally when I got the Sign O' Times concert video I thought the swearing on it was so cool, now more than 25 years later I find it gratuitous even if it's very minimal.

By the same token something like "Face Down" even though it contains more swearing than the example above, I accept because it is accenuating the message and sentiments of the song.

.

.

Of course he did use swearing in concert from as far back as 1981....Why you wanna treat me so bad - BITCH!

So he swears in this new song. Kind of happy he isn't restricting his self. After all they are only words created by humans to express themselves I really don't see the harm or evil in them just words.
