Referring to "The Future" as "cold funk" doesn't miss the mark that badly in my mind. It's the same type of stuff as "Erotic City", just done with the production standards of the late-80s. I'm reminded of a lot of the stuff that George Clinton, Rick James and others were doing around that time (or a few years earlier).

Militant said: The Future is brilliant, as is the remix done by William Orbit and Mark Moore. I agree! The Future is simplistic at first listen but with attentioned given to it, one can hear the multiple layers of dance and funk that is dark in tone and brilliant in it's composition. It's a wonferful track. Darling Nikki is essentially a rock compisition. I do not consider ita funk track. It's more in your face rock with slight flavores of jazz in the verses. It builds to a climatic rock oper-esq explosion...quite good! I do love tone and musical feel in The Future. It has a heart pounding driven beat with splashes of funk layers in the rhythm. I also love the string arrangement as it gives another texture of sound that flows nicely. Dad. Cartoonist. Illustrator. TOPPS Star Wars and Walking Dead Illustrator. Film Illustrator. JEDI. whereas Darlin Nikki is the worst song on one of his very best albums. However if Darling Nikki was on NewPowersoul it would lift that thing up
Put the Pipe down now and leave this site...surely to god you can get banned for posting shit like this?

Sorry I have just always found Darlin g Nikki very average, sometimes I skip it and go straight into Doves from Computer Blue and I just don't really like the Newpowersoul album much.
But I love "come on", that thing is my jam. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

regardless of funk or not...Darling Nikki kills everything ahead of it and after...JUST F***ing listen to the two songs back 2 back...
can not actually believe U made a thread about this... If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Darling Nikki (with a G at the end, not Darlin'!), Prince 4Ever.

so when Prince described it himself as the 'coldest funk"
what he should have done is pop on the net and run it past you??

^ I believe it was the album "1999" Prince himself described as his most "coldest" record.. Prince 4Ever.

It´s like he´s always in a bad mood, he must have a very hard life.

Maybe its because like me, he lives in New Zealand which is about as far away from the Prince as humanly possible.
Thank god for some of the hardcore Aussie (And Kiwi) fans I have met in the past few years. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

. Lawson...has a troll like personality doesn't he?...hence the title of this pathetic thread, which of course you have to lower yourself to comment on....purposely using the word 'funk' so he can cause trouble later. Dude is so pathetically transparent it's beyond boring...and tiresome at the best of times... . Let everyone take note HE brought up 'race' first, FOR NO REASON...thus playing the race card...thus purposely seeking conflict. . Maybe he's feeling particularly impotent and insecure today. (More than usual).

There is no irony in white dudes discussing funk. It's just you enforcing racial boundaries. Very shaky ground. Explain the irony. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

Another lol for you! Are you sure that Prince is black enough in order to be able to talk competently about Funk? What is more important to be qualified for Funk competence the colour of your skin or your age? As we all know Prince isn't as funky as he used to be. Would it be possible to compensate the lack of black skin with age-related youthfulness? [Edited 8/5/13 4:10am] [Edited 8/5/13 4:12am]

Right, he's so black that he is able to create one funk masterpiece after another. Never old school James Brown lite, people are tired of, always up to date brand new avantgarde funk grooves. Eye like funky music! lol [Edited 8/5/13 13:59pm]

OMG! The sacrilegious things I am reading here!!
Both The Future and Darling Nikki are grade A Prince, Darling Nikki being more legendary due to being on Purple Rain.
Are they both funk?
DG is rockfunk with an heavy metal vibe, on its own it is one of those delicious songs that is hard to classify except as a "classic Prince take on two or three idioms". It is cold and very warm at the same time -- in fact it is steamy like good porno.
The Future is straight futuristic funk, a warning about the cold hard world out there and beyond. It's perfect as it sounds exactly like what it should have sounded like for what it had to say -- crisp, electronic, with just enough humanity to let you know a human is behind the controls.
Both songs are dark and unsentimental to the extreme, but only Darling Nikki has leftover passion, while The Future tries to defend this contained passion with its cold, hard groove.
