A Few Questions About "Extralovable"

First off, in an interview about the "updated" [disbelief] version, didn't Prince say that he recorded it in the '1999" sessions? I find this odd, being that he said "Hey Dez, Don't you like my band?" in the song. I'm sure I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the song was actually recorded during the "Purple Rain" sessions [@ least some time in '83]. I feel this way, because him referencing his dead daddy [wasn't the father suppose to die in the original script to "PR"?] would make more sense from a "PR" standpoint.

I'm sure I am wrong about what I THINK he said, & I'm sure you'll correct me & probably talk shit to me for being wrong [fuck you, in advance smile ]. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I don't need a bunch of shit talk to come with it. I CAN admit when I'm wrong, unlike some of you lunchboxes here. neutral

Also, I think I would like the update version of the song better, if he would have kept multiple vocals on it [like, his high registry, his normal registry, & his occasional deep registry, like it is in the original]. Does anybody else feel this way?

Dez left after 1999's tour. The song was recorded in 1982, so it was probably during some discord with Dez, which caused Prince to comment on the turmoil in a way only Prince can. I'm sure it was meant to be a "funny" and not actually mean, which is why Dez was still in Purple Rain.

Tittypants--I can admit when you're wrong, too. biggrin

I agree that I would have liked the mix of registers in the re-recording too. One of the major charms of the original.

^ Princevault adds: "It is possible that the track was worked on further in 1983, as some of the lyrics could be interpreted as referring to Dez Dickerson's departure from the band and Wendy Melvoin's arrival."

So basically ur guess is as good at anyone's, but the original recording date is from Per Nielsen's researches and therefore can be trusted to be true.

It is 82, Dez was disatisfied long before he left. Hed actually did most of the Triple Threat Dates and I think Wendy played a few dates, but she did not be come a band member officially until the benefit show in August 1983, the one that gave us Electric Intercourse.

I also read, Dez was having doubts from 1980 onwards when he had his dream where God was talking to him and he was getting uncomfortablke about doing the songs Head and Sister on stage, by early 82, Dez was probably not liking his band and he may also been smarting about the lack of credit for giving him the credit for various solos on Controversy and the Time and of course "After Hi School".

He may have been disgruntled with Andre leaving as well, and Prince's increasing Napoleon complex.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Nonetheless, there was no grudge between Dez and Prince. Prince asked the bandmembers to commit for at least 2 years when he started the whole Purple rain thing and told them "if u wanna go solo it's OK, my management will help u, but please just say it now". Dez quit and according to his book Prince held his promise: his management really tried to get Dez a record deal and that's also y he's got a cameo in the movie.

But the lyrics about the dad being dead & stuff are just out of nowhere?

I assume so--just fiction or humor. It certainly isn't something that I think we're supposed to take seriously. I mean, do people joke like that about their actual dead parents--especially if, as in Purple Rain, they either just died or its a major dramatic plot point. I don't think "The Kid," in any version of Purple Rain, ever had much of a sense of humor--and don't bring up that stupid puppet.

No it is not true that Dez played guitar solos on Controvery album
It 'a all Prince and his Hohner. Privete Joy is done by Prince also but with Fender Strat. And no Wendy never played on a 1999 tour, but yes Wendy did replace Dez on a few rehearsals.
