"Jaguar" can you imagine if prince had kept this for himself instead of giving it to mavis staples?
coupled with electric chair, and "time waits for no one" in there somewhere.
dude, 1989. those beats were all so deliciously fine

Eh, I dunno. Jauguar's never really done it for me. It reeks of tossed-off giveaway material, even if he'd kep it for himself. PS: has anyone ever been able to tell the difference between the extended version and the "ferocious" version? I never have. Or maybe I just couldn't force myself to listen to it long enough or often enough to figure it out.

Was this one of the songs intened for the second album by The Family? I seem to recall Susannah making a vague reference to a track that sounded like it might be this one.

it was written for sheena easton iirc, but then given to mavis instead a bit later.

I was told that Sheena Easton recorded this track in the fall of 1988 with Prince at Paisley Park Studios for her The Lover In Me album. MCA Records ultimately rejected the track for the finished project which came out in November.

After checking some online sources, it appears that if Sheena Easton was indeed involved with laying down vocals for this track, it would have been in the early months of 1987. Thus the track would have been intended for her NO SOUND BUT A HEART album for EMI Records (along with Eternity) OR for an abondonded Prince-produced album project. Prince predicted the future, but using the wrong cat name. Should've been titled "Cougar".

haven't heard the full Mavis version, but the DJ Foefur mix I have that includes it in there makes it sound QUITE lovely indeeed. Because of that snippet my curiousity has always been piqued about that album and if the rest was of the same quality of the delicious few seconds of Jaguar.

me too, it's cool. but not the greatest Mavis version. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

I always like 'Come Home'. So Prince, so late eighties, so nice. "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Prince wrote the song "Jaguar" for Sheena Easton. A 'Jag' was Sheena's first car!!!

I think the Family song making reference to cats was probably "Feline," a rehearsal of which is available, but I don't think a studio version is circulating--or is it?

Sounds like a Mazarati outtake to me.

There are some great songs on that album, Come Home, I Guess I'm Crazy, Time Waits For No One, and Jaguar I really do like. It probably isn't a song she ever performed, it is kind of beneath her dignity. The Voice was a better "Mavis" album, her style and the history she has. Jeff Tweedy has been producing really great music for her, with the kind of message she represents. I love Mavis, she helped Prince grow up some. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I always really liked this song. This album was decent, however I was never a fan of Jaguar.

I love that electronic percussion sound he was experimenting with during this era. I think he also used it on The Future, and maybe even Rave. Any producer types know what that was? "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."
