So Prince will not play instruments with his large band Prince will not play guitar and piano with this oversized overproduced mess of a band. I like Prince 's singing but concert without his guitar playing is a wasted oportunity and whats with 12 horn players on stage? Does he really need 12 horn players

According to Michael B. Nelson, who wrote the arrangements for the horns, a lot of the stuff they recorded recently requires at least 10 horns. They also sometimes did 5 horn arrangements (Extraloveable), but with 2 passes to get a fuller sound.

Paul thank you for your contribution but i still doubt he needs 12 horns. 3 horns can cover everything.12 is extravaganza

Ditch the back up singers. It will bring the down the size of the band from 22 to 19. I don't want to hear Shelby J screaming and drowning out the horn section. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Thanks in return But if the music, as on Boyfriend (don't know if it will be included on the setlist) is written for 2 separate 5 piece horn section passes, where one is muted brass + alto and tenor, and the other is open horns with bari replacing alto, then it is not enough with 3 horns. I JUST CAN'T WITH THIS! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

everything in his band. he is not a big band type of music is he

I would like him to perform some of his new music, and some of that music was written and arranged specifically for a big band. The fact that his trying something new with his line up is a good thing in itself imo. But if you don't like that type of music, that is of course ok too The wooh is on the one!

NO Paul i love big band stuff, and i would like to see Prince performing with symphony or big band ,but this is not a big band. the thing is i think like this More players on the stage ,less music u will get. He spend decades full of horns and in 2007 or 2008 i think he started experimenting with smaller band formations ,getting back to his roots as a performer.
remember 1978 until 1984 a very stripped down band and did they bring magic or what. With 20 and more people on stage there will be less Prince. yes he will sing but tell me you wont miss his guitar playing or keyboard playing. And dont get me started on a sound mix problems. do you know how hard it will be to get the right mix for those live concerts. And even if Prince plays guitar on those concert it will sound muddy because of the sound mix.i hope i am wrong on all accounts but ... no way. you're talking like someone who hasn't heard the horn section in action. i did last weekend. he's got them waxing poetic on arrangements that call for sustained, bluesy jazz chords, you know like that train you hear in the distance sometimes on a lonely night? that's why he needs the horns. big, full rich chords filling out that snappy beat.

You were there? Cool! Did the horns stay on for the entire show? The wooh is on the one!

yes i was lucky to have been able to go!! thanx to our hero prince, who generously opened his doors to us.
because it was also a dance party DJ Dudley was spinning tunes as well. the horn section is really quite impressive, imo, but they weren't featured all night long as i recall

I was also astonished by his work last Saturday, at least I was thinking so, but all the horn arrangements are not by Prince? Is there anything I could read about B. Nelson's commitment to the work with Prince? Compared to the recent years Prince is never absent even for a second despite the number of the musicians and him not playing instruments. And he sings like before, say, like in '80s and '90s. I, as the one who can't play any instruments nor sing, am very curious about it. Is it technique or spirit? [Edited 7/10/13 23:17pm]

Wouldn't this (12-piece horn section) be something new?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
To clarify, I don't know what's on their set list, so I don't know which of my arrangements they are using, but if they are playing any of the new stuff we recorded over the last year and a half (which I can't discuss until it is released), there are many instances where 10 horns are required for the arrangement to be performed properly. Also, just because he's using 11 horns, it doesn't make it a "big band" sound. Plenty of the old Motown acts (Four Tops, Temptation, etc) had 10 piece horn sections live. The sound and style are going to be determined by the way the horns are used, not simply by the number of players.

Thanks for the clarification! When I wrote "big band" I didn't have a specific genre in mind, although I see that it could be perceived that way. I was simply referring to the number of players. [Edited 7/11/13 18:40pm] The wooh is on the one!

I think the operative word here is "rehearsal". Maybe, just maybe, he wants them to "rehearse" so that they will be as tight as possible. The more parts everyone learns, the tighter the band, correct? So why would Prince, in a rehearsal for a new band, with horns, take away opportunities for them to rehearse? Just sayin'.

Why do I have a feeling that prince KNOWS what he is doing as it relates 2 being a band leader?

You almost just described the Parade tour...
Prince only played guitar for like one song and a short keyboard lick here or there mostly, And that tour is a fan favourite so you can't really tell just from the size of the band alone.
Also The live stream last week sounded awesome with Ain't Gonna Miss U, Courtin Time.
Awesome work MrMoops - I for one am looking forward to hearing the Montreux gigs this weekend if he ever releases them

A big hello to Mr. Maps. I 'm not dissing the horns, i love horns.i just think that larger the band it will be hard to get the right sound mix and Prince will play less. Parade tour is a first Prince tour with medleys of the song.it was a good tour but far from his best
