If you hate to say it, then don't say it. It's like when someone says, "I don't mean to racist..." you know they are gonna say something racists. We don't need a disclaimer before you say something stupid. This is a great period in Prince's career and he's having fun. One mic, 3 girls and him proove he doesn't need a 22 piece band to sound good. It's his cataloug he's trying to fill and I love it.

The OP isn't saying "something stupid".He's saying what alot of us are feeling.

"This is a great period in Prince's career"

Enjoy it while you can, because these girls and this project will be forgotten/discarded by the end of the year wink Just watch.

Apparantly some folks cannot even stomach one year of it. Poor fans.

But I could care less about 3rdEyeGirl. If Prince wasn't involved with them, they wouldn't even register to me @ all. I have nothing against them whatsoever, I'm just not really into them. Does anybody else feel this way? Why does Prince do this crap? I wish Prince would link up with a Flying Lotus, or someone like that, that would actually stretch his sound out far beyond what he's been doing recently.....but I forgot, it's "Real music by real musicians".... rolleyes ....GTFOH.

I don't agree that TP shouldn't be allowed to speak his mind. When he said, "I hate to say it...", it could have just meant that it won't be a popular opinion, or that as a Prince fan he doesn't like feeling this way...

Why does it have to be the same as a racist statement? confuse

And why is it stupid not to like something because others do?
If you think it's a great period in Prince's career and that he's having fun, then cool. Go ahead and love it...
We don't have to agree.

Here's a thought....another perspective.

I care, I really do. Even though I sometimes say I don't, I still do. I think the fans who were there from the beginning still care a great deal. That's why we're all here on this site..right? eek

Yeah, 3rd Eye Girl...does nothing for me, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the art of it.

I agree with boring and uninspired, but I ask myself what is it going to take to perk up my ears again? I don't have an answer. sad What is it that I want to hear that I haven't already heard?

The man has (had) a basic formula and it's run it's course. Let him go. He has enough money and time to do what he wants...and all we can do is criticise.

What am I waiting to hear??? I've consumed so much music in the past 30 years (all genres and previous decades) that it's hard to listen to any new music without being critical.

BTW - MJ "Thriller" was the #1 album this week in 1983. 30 YEARS AGO! eek

Ask yourself, how much have you listened to since the release of Thriller...Purple Rain...etc. What are we going to saying when Purple Rain turns 40 years old? eek

Pop culture as we knew it has changed drastically. Prince was a huge pop culture icon and still is in a way..but it's not the same.

If Prince was still at his peak (1999/Purple Rain era) in pop culture, would the music sound any different? Would the hype fliter the way you listen to his music? Now that he's just another musician, are we more critical?

Popular culture is the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emergingglobal mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society.

Popular culture is often viewed as being trivial and dumbed-down in order to find consensual acceptance throughout the mainstream. As a result, it comes under heavy criticism from various non-mainstream sources (most notablyreligious groups and countercultural groups) which deem it superficial, consumerist, sensationalist, and corrupted.

The abbreviated form "pop" for popular, as in pop music, dates from the late 1950s. Although terms "pop" and "popular" are in some cases used interchangeably, and their meaning partially overlap, the term "pop" is narrower. Pop is specific of something containing qualities of mass appeal, while "popular" refers to what has gained popularity, regardless of its style.

I actually agree with a lot you're saying. I just seem to notice a trend in where Prince only works with people he can control. I really dig the idea of Prince working with others....it would just be nice if it was others that was actually more of a challenge to him [from a creative standpoint]. If he worked with other producers, that are dope themselves, I think we could really get some seriously great music from Prince now days. But, I know he wants all of the glory ( & money lol ) himself. I would love to hear Prince co-produce music with the likes of Thom Yorke, Van Hunt, [Brook Dleau] J Davey, Little Dragon, Flying Lotus & Thundercat, J.U.S.T.I.C.E, Daft Punk, ?uestlove, Vampire Weekend....shoot, I could think of quite a few others that spark my interest too. But, it's just my opinion. lol

We interrupt your regularly scheduled program of bitching about how Prince has lost it for this PSA: For my money, from the Dakota Shows to the LOL Tour, this is the most enjoyable tour this summer. (I hate to diss anybody because I think that I can show love for Prince while not talking negatively about others, but I'm so glad that Prince is not trying to recapture his 80s youth like Madonna. I saw her on the Billboard Awards show, and she looked like a joke, half dressed and trying to be irreverent. Not to be disrespectful, but she reminded me of the old person at the club who doesn't know she's too damn old to be at the club.) With that said, with these stripped down rocking and funky shows, Prince has been kickin' ass this summer! Who else can give you the variety of "Screwdriver" and "Adore" in the same show? Man, please, Prince is still the stuff! My iPod is filled with gems from this tour, and I'm spending almost every night on my terrace bobbing my head to these excellent shows. Also, I dig a good deal of the studio stuff that we've gotten from 3rd Eye Girl. So, far, for me, 2013 has been a musical blast! I now return y'all to y'all's regularly scheduled program of bitching still in progress.

Hang on a minute - it's one thing to say that you're not into 3EG but quite another to start complaining and speculating because he doesn't do what you want him to do. How do you know he is uninspired and unchallenged? Just because you don't like the music? Then find music that you don't find boring and inspires you.

Prince constantly changes musicians and also musicians move on to do other things which forces him to find replacements and he collaborates with artists all the time. This has happened over his entire career and just look at how many people he worked with in the last 12 or so months. They are not the artists that you would want him to collaborate with but isn't that up to Prince to do his music whichever way and with whoever he wants? Any artist who cares about their art operates like that, it is their perogative, it's their creativity and they make the choices. Prince wants the music to sound a certain way and so he tries to find musicians that help him bring this sound that is in his head to life. There are plenty independent artists out there that operate in the same way. They are not as famous as Prince but they are in control of their music.

Ultimately, threads that complain about Prince should do this or sound like that have been here before. It would be more constructive to discuss what exactly it is that makes us connect with a band or not. So what is it about 3EG or the NPG or any other configuration of bands Prince has had that makes us feel to care/ to be attached? I don't know the answer by the way. And don't do the hate fest.

Perfect! This means Prince's plan to get rid of all his purist fans is working like a charm.

Honestly, I prefer 3rdeyegirl to yet another line-up of the NPG.

The 3rdeyegirl material might not be memorable every single time, but I do feel it is more interesting that what he has put out there lately.

If you compare a song like Cinnamon Girl to Fixurlifeup, there's no contest -- CG sounds so light, this is a better rock band and closer to what rock is supposed to sound like.

Things like Octopus and Menstrual Cycle are just generously shared, they are not meant to say this is his next single or anything.

I'm not here to hate on you, or anybody else for their opinion. I just know that, if 3rd eye girl is inspiring him with this new music he's been coming out with.....I'm really not hearing anything all that worth-wild. I listen to far more than Prince, but, we all here now that he's far more capable than what he's been doing. Ultimately, I think it's all over....I/we just don't want to admit it.

I honestly never cared for the NPG @ all. lol So, I agree with this. nod

You make them sound like The Original 7ven. razz

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Everyone should be aware that all of the members of 3rdEyeGirl are in the current NPG lineup. Along with the backup singers and the horn section. not sure who else is in there but more than likely some keyboard/piano players and a dancer of some sort.

lol THIS is exactly why I don't post much in this area. This is just as bad, if not worse, than the P & R section. disbelief

No, I've NEVER been a fan of the NPG. I still think The Revolution is the best. razz
