I like it, everything except tracks 3 and 4. Went to the brixton academy gig, all good. I remember my uncle bought a bootleg vhs from that tour where prince did the one eyed bass version of mad sex and was wearing all shiny black with a shirt cut short around the arms. until youre in my arms again sounded good at the time but it was the late 90s despite that i didnt listen to the radio at the time because a lot of garbage like master p and mystical was blaring on the stations and so compared to what was going on the radio, ill understand vibe magazine reviewing the entire project and calling it "certified masterpiece" which prince stated in the interview with tavis smiley because a lot of people forget that there was a lot of garbage like master p and i never really cared for dru hill either.

it really surprised me when the war cassette was sent out to all the fans as a thank you for buying the crystal ball set that year. I remember that cuz i purchased a few items from 1-800-NEW-FUNK.

Welp, close the thread. Jonylawson knows everything about music. We had a good run, guys.
I guess Prince doesn't know anything about music either, since he released the damned thing. I guess we can say you KNOW nothing about punctuation based on one shitty post, right?
Seriously, though, this album is far from horrible. It's like most of his albums since, say, Gold; 2 or 3 great tracks, 3-4 OK ones and 2 or 3 turds, in line with Come, The Vault, Rave...even Emancipation had the same hit/miss ratio.
I've noticed over the years and during my time on this forum that a majority of the members here don't like Prince's dancier, disco type stuff (NPS, MPLSound, and especially anything with rap) as much as the rock and pop, which is fine, but I find myself in the other camp.
I love people on the internet telling other what they should like. You like anchovies and hate olives and goat cheese? You KNOW nothing about eating food!

It's labeled as such, but besides the horns and Marva's magnificent backup vocals, it mostly all Prince... and I've always liked this album.
'Freaks On This Side', 'Push It Up', 'Come On' and 'Mad Sex' are killer.
The horn arrangements and vocal arrangements are big and complex, and I like his drumming/drum programming as well.

Good thing I said SINCE Gold and used it as my benchmark. A lot of people hate several songs on that record (Now, We March, Dolphin) but that's beside the point since I didn't include it in my cut off.
Come?
Seriously? "Papa", "Solo", "Orgasm". Those are bad.

You still haven't. Nobody said that. The guy was answering your questions about whether there were turds on Gold. A question to a topic nobody posited. You got called out for claiming that someone who said they liked this record "knew nothing about music" and you never defended it. You're writing sucks too, by the way. Oh...I mean OMG! BTW!!!!
Can I listen to some of your music? Do you have any YouTube links I could check out? I want to see if they're better than NPS.

I thought for the time, it was very nice. I got drunk to it a lot back in the day with my headphones and have nothing bad to say about the album. Much better than Diamonds and Pearls.

nice retort! Herb4 is not a newbie. S/he has been writing insightful, intelligent (and grammatically correct) posts for ages. And your reading comprehension skills are atrocious. To go back to your original post, aside from the fact that taste in music is a personal, intangible thing, do you really find it shocking that someone might like NPS more than Rave or PE? I find it to be not among his best, but with flashes of brilliance and lots of fun, which I don't hear much of on either Rave or PE. But hey, taste in music is subjective, so I get irked when people claim that it's not. Relax and share your opinion and let others do the same. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Ahhh come on now, he did say he was sorry & that what he wrote was a bit 'wanky'. People on here make strong (subjective) statements about music & other subjects all the time, rarely do i see anyone say sorry for anything. There are no such things as NPG albums (or Madhouse albums, or Vanity 6 albums, etc.). Gold Nigga and Exodus are Prince albums as well as Newpower Soul and The War, but officially they are all NPG albums nonetheless. Indeed. I file my albums by the name under which they were released so for me a NPG album is a NPG album and if tomorrow Prince releases a solo album under the name "The Big Alcoholic Bicycle Of Mr. Potato" then for the life of me it'll be filed under that name But on the other hand I know who did what on these albums anyway and I consider Prince's discography as a whole more than 2 co-existing Prince and Side-Projects discographies, because there is an artistic progression that can be analized on a more subtle level if you see it as a whole (with the side-projects filling many gaps). But who gives a shit anyway? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Now look at this:

I've got 8 years on you, sport, and was listening to Dirty Mind while you were reading "Hop on Pop".
Do you want to shit up the thread while posting from your phone as you fly your plane, debate the merits of NewPowerSoul, address a single thing I said or just lecture everyone about why their taste in music sucks? At least my retort had, what do they call it? Content.
BTW, your poetry sucks. As well as your diction, punctuation and grammar. NPS has it all over you.
Maybe Reddit or Yahoo! comments are more your speed. Or texting your bro's while driving on the highway. Post something worth reading or get out. We get it. You know everything about music and don't enjoy NewPowerSoul.

When this album came out, I didn't think I would like it. And then the first track played and I was bobbing my head. Each subsequent track was either funky, strange, or beautiful. Right through to the end. No, it wasn't Purple Rain, but it's DEFINITELY one of Prince's lightest, funkiest "side" albums ever. Come On, The One, Until Ur In My Arms...seriously people, these are strong P tracks.

nps is way better than that shitty gold record .. prince (c)rapped all over gold .. belonged in the chaos toilet .. nps is the last gasp of the great prince .. production is ok .. some of the grooves are superb to anything that has come since .. come on .. the one and wasted kisses are classics .. nothing since has touched those songs .. better than emancipation rave rainbow musicology 3121 .. all that shit ..

I like NPS album a lot. I like funky music and freaks on this side are the two songs i like least. I really like wasted kisses, shoo-be-doo, title track, until ur in my arms, the one, come on. All classics. I consider it a "prince" album and label it as such in my iTunes and mp3 compilations.
