BORN AGAIN
Years after Prince suppressed it, his fabled Black Album appears

BY DAVID E. THIGPEN

.

Rumors spread in 1987 that the Black Album was kept from release because it was too raunchy and violent for radio

Bob George is the fifth song on Prince's sixteenth album "The Black Album" (originally planned for release as his tenth album, albeit with no artist credit). In 1989, a live version was included on the Lovesexy Live 2 VHS, taken from the 9 September, 1988 live TV broadcast.

.

Initial tracking took place on 7 December, 1986 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (on the same day as the gospel-tinged Walkin' In Glory, which engineer Susan Rogers said may have been "to compensate" for Bob George, two days before 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton).

The track, along with 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton and Le Grind, were recorded for a birthday party Prince was hosting for Sheila E. on 11 December, 1986.

.

Although unreleased at the time, Prince played Bob George during every show on the Lovesexy Tour as the penultimate song of the first, darker, half of the show. At the end of the song, the character Prince played was shot, before Prince was 'redeemed', playing Anna Stesia to close the first half. -PrinceVault.com

The Sheila E Birthday Party song

"Actually, 'The Black Album' began with some tracks that he cut specifically as party music for a birthday party that he was throwing for Sheila E. Some of that album was designed as party music, which may or may not mean that he had ideas of ever releasing it. So there was nothing really dark going on in his life; the album started out as very innocuous dance music for a girlfriend, and his dream building, his facility and his company, was growing by leaps and bounds."

Spooky Electric was talking, Camille started 2 cry.

Tricked.
A fool he had been.

In the lowest utmostest.

He had allowed
the dark side of him 2 create something evil.

2 Nigs United
4 West Compton.

Camille and his ego.

Bob George.

Why?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Music

FADE TO 'BLACK'
SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS CREATION, PRINCE'S MUCH-BOOTLEGGED 'BLACK ALBUM' MOVES OUT OF THE BLACK MARKET -- BUT SEEMS TO HAVE LOST SOME OF THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC.

Review by David Browne

.

At least time hasn't diminished "Bob George," an experiment that's spooky, scary, and funny, sometimes all at once. The beat is stark, chilling; Prince, playing someone who sounds like a crackhead coming down from a high, barks out complaints and accuses his girlfriend of sleeping with Prince's manager ("Prince? That skinny motherf---er with the high voice? Please!"). Guns go off, the police arrive, and he shoots at them too. "Bob George" unmasks the black-humored side of Prince we rarely see,

Think I won't? (Oh no! The nigger's got a laser)
(Let's get the hell out of here)

Is Mr. George home?
Hello, Mr. George? {Note: The high pitched voice}
This is your conscience, motherfucker {that responds to his call, when}
Why don't u leave motherfuckers alone? {slowed down to about 2 rpm,says}
What's wrong with u? {"Operator, what city please?"}
Well, why can't we just dance?
Why can't we just dance?
No, fuck that, fuck that

Wit' yo' little almond-shaped head ass
Who the fuck do u think this is?

Q

Prince
The Black Album

.

But the standout track -- until now, the great missing Prince song -- is the claustrophobic, sadistic, bleakly humorous Bob George. Of all the things he's done, Prince has rarely scared; Bob George changes that. For anyone who's ever had any interest in the strange little fellow, Black Album is a near essential requisite.

Then under 'MUSIC' if ound this:

"Samples of "Bob George" would later show up on an official promo mix of Madonna's 1989 "Like A Prayer" but were since been removed." eek

WORD?! Anybody know if this in circulation?

I think it's just like Cloreen Bacon Skin. He's just making shit up as he

goes along. It's funny and a little insightful. I mean Alfred was his

half brother, but I wouldn't read too much into it.

Amazing track Bob George, and what a funky brilliant album it is: The Black Album is really one of my faves, almost a personal "top 10" Prince album, imho.

Lovesexy live... The extravagante and flamboyant outfit was soo cool, reminds me of Liberace or Elton John, in concerts.

Oh it was such a great time back then 1987/88:

1. to discover the Black Album on a copied cassette tape - in 1988, in very bad sound. It was still soo cool.

2. to find it on vinyl bootleg

3. finally finding the CD bootleg with some Camille tracks as bonus... also in '88.

4. finding the Small Club aftershow on 2CD bootleg

5. >> then, the Black Album: FINALLY on official vinyl and CD in the fall of 1994.

-- so many memories. cloud9

Actually if you listen to Do Yourself a Favor the latter half of it, he changes his talking voice and turns violent, saying similar things on Bob George

Uh, yes
U like that?
Then come here, sit down
Let me talk 2 U
U hear that?
That's a 50 dollar bill
When's the last time U seen one of them?
That's what I thought
Let me tell U somethin'
When me and U used 2 be... me and U used 2 be 2gether
I didn't have no money in my pocket
That's all different now, that's all different
Now U wanna play, now U wanna play crazy
U're not crazy
U're no crazier than I, don't play, don't act like that
U didn't try 2 understand where I was comin' from back then
Why U tryin' 2 now?
Cuz U know I got that money, that's why
Uh huh, yeah
Sit down, don't talk, come here, sit down!
I'll kick your ass
What, U think U bad now?
I'll kick your ass
Come here, good God
.
Mmmm
Oh yes
Somebody call up the Colonel, I hear some chicken scratchin'
Pow!
.
If U see me walkin' down the street one day, baby
Don't say nothin'
U used 2 do me wrong, baby
That's back when I was doin' bad
But now, baby, now, baby, I got more money than I ever had
Oh Lord, yes yes
Do yourself a favor, baby
Take it on down the road
Let that sidewalk hit U where the dog should've bit U, yes baby
Oh Lord
Oh Lord, eh
.
I'll kick your ass
Don't U play crazy with me, I'm...
U... U not crazy, I'm crazy
I'm the one that's crazy {fade out}
U're not crazy
Come here
Don't U walk away from me
I don't care what I told U, come back here
U hear me talkin' 2 U, baby?
Come here, come here
I'll kick your ass
