I am SO surprised at the number of suggestions!

I agree that When You Were Mine woulda been a logical choice. I guess P and WB knew DM wouldn't be a hit anyway due to its hardcore lyrics and decided instead to capitalize on the hype it would create among the tastemakers and gatekeepers (Dez explains all this pretty clearly in his book), therefore they favored singles that sounded new wave/postpunk, one with sexual lyrics and the other with hippie utopic lyrics.

Private Joy could also have been a success, it's true, it's a gem of a pop song.

I remember Girls & Boys got a lot of radio airplay in France (where it was a single), everyone was familiar with it and it's one of the first Prince song I heard and enjoyed before buying Batman.

As for Housequake I never understood why everyone (including Alan Leeds) say it could have been a hit. Don't misunderstand me, it's a classic and I love it to death, but there's no melody, no chorus, nothing that makes it easy to grasp. I always thought it was too weird a song to be appreciated by mass audiences. Forever In My Life could maybe have been a good single for SOTT?

I never really understood why Prince decided to skip videos for so many singles, or decided to chose live footages for promo videos. Obviously the live versions of his songs were too different from the studio versions that were on radio for being a good promotional tool. It was cool having them as fans, but a bad marketing move IMHO.
