i think part of the reason that so many prince fans rag on his music is

because of his diversity

please don't get me wrong... this isn't a prince constantly shits gold nuggets thread

but i think many people like a certain style that prince does... or maybe a couple of different ones.... then when he goes in a completely different direction they seem to get mad

i'm loving the current guitar-centric prince... but i get it may not be where it's at for some

although, let's face it... he's been flipping the script since atwiad.... people should be used to it by now

there... now i've sorted that for you, there's no need to bitch about where he's at musically... you can get on with life and play something you dig

nice huh?

you're welcome

For me it's not about styles, but about creativity. I can fully enjoy every style Prince has ever approached, but only when I feel like he's really reaching for something. Let me try and drum up a few examples:

R&B:

Come = good, Hot Wit U = bad

Rock:

Last December = good, Guitar = bad

Balladry:

Adore = good, Satisfied = bad

Experimental:

East = good, 777 Beverly Park = bad

PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

You could be right about the diversity of his music, but it seems since his earlier days, he never pigeon-holed himself into one, particular category of music, so to be honest, I really don't see why fans who are aware of that would get mad or angry when he does. I have always enjoyed the diversity of his music.

That being said, As far as younger artists today and diversity in their music, the only younger artist I see doing that is Bruno Mars, as he doesn't seem to stick to one, particular style of music.

For me, it's more about the lyrics and how he delivers them. So many times, they seem tossed off and passionless and never a second or third run through to sell either.

Often when I hear his newer stuff, after about 3 listens I come up with minor tweaks of his lyrics that would make them sound a little more poetic or clever. I wish he put that effort into them from the get-go.

And he just sings so much of it so bloodlessly. He doesn't deliver a lot of it in a convincing way, with no soul or passion.

Fixurlife up is a perfect example of both of these problems.

That said, I do genuinely enjoy most of what he's put out in the last decade. shrug

I have to give a nod to all that too. Completely agree.

Can someone explain to me why there's so much hate for 77 Beverly Park? I know it seems a little out of place on that album but that is a beautiful song. The guitar work is excellent and so different for him. I don't know, hate on it all you'd like, more for me to love.

Prince USED to have his own style. This is why he was great.

In my late teens and early 20's, I would frequent all types of night clubs, and P was never played at any of them.

He was never R&B enough to play at a black club

He was never Pop enough to play at a gringo club

He was never Rock enough to play at a grunge club and so on......

And yet he was all of the above in his own way!!

Like I said. he had his own style.

That all died, when he started replicating rap, and hip hop, and R&B (grrrrrrr)

He then just became another R&B sheep.

Dont get me wrong, some of the music was still funky, but it wasn't Prince. It couldve been any other R&B artist, and you wouldnt have known the difference.

He has since tried to re-ignite his old mojo, but.................................... nah.

He's still the best, IMO. And he's certainly my favorite.

Honestly I was wondering about that the other day. How come some people like me still enjoy Prince's music, always have had, and some are like stuck in 1995?

I have no definitive answer really, it's kind of a riddle to me, but my conclusion is that I REALLY love Prince's music, as a whole, no matter what Prince does the ingredients that made me love him during his "classic" years are still there for me, I just enjoy his latest albums as much as I enjoyed Parade or 1999.

On the other hand some people just love a particular era of Prince's music. This is not unthinkable: for example I really love the first years of Gary Numan's music but I'm kinda bored by what came after 1983. I'm also much more into David Bowie's music from the 80's and 90's than into his early, so-called "classic" stuff. I'm totally in love with Eurythmics' more electronic albums but kinda bored with their pop-rock material and most of what Lennox and Steward released afterwards. I love Stevie Wonder's work from the 70's but his 60's and 80's recordings aren't so much to my taste. I'm in love with most of Bill Laswell's catalogue except for his free-jazz and metal albums, which aren't to my taste. I'm crazy about Bruce Springsteen's first album but I really don't care about a single note of what he's recorded ever since. My reactions are not so extreme, though, I don't DESPISE the works I'm less interested in by these musicians, and I'm certainly not gonna rant bitterly on forums about them doing whatever they do that I may dislike, it's every artist's right to do whatever they feel like doing. I guess some people here have emotional problems, or don't have a life...

But yeah, I love certain eras by some musicians, while I'm into almost everythin some others will record (not only Prince, there are several others who managed to seduce me all along their career).

So in the end: the people who keep complaining about Prince's music after 1995 are not Prince fans, they're just fans of a certain era in Prince's career. It's a different thing. They don't love Prince's music as a whole and for its most fundamental elements (the ones that always were, and always will be there), they love Prince's music for certain elements that were there at some (quite short) point in his (long) career and aren't anymore. They should just be happy with this and stop being mad like this because there's no reason Prince should do the music they like: he never dis, fundamentally, it was just some aspects of what he did at some point that they liked.

So why don't they move on to another artist? IDK, there's some joy in being bitter I guess...

This is really on point and is exactly how I feel about Prince. I still enjoy his work and don't begrudge any of the changes. There really isn't a "golden" period for me. There are songs i love from the very beginning of his career right to songs released last week.

I feel sorry for those folks you are always looking backwards with Prince. it must be a sad place to be.

Agreed-

At some point Prince decided to become a follower of people that aren't even deserving of the chance to shine his shoes.. confused

Oh, 'hate' is too string a word here. I don't hate it, I just feel that this particular piece isn't really much of a stretch... like something you might hear on a generic 'Sounds of Italy' cd. It's redeemed slightly by the possible indication that it's a message to Manuela that we're not allowed to know the details of.

Compared to East though, as an experimental piece, I find it to be pretty by-the-numbers.

I didn't mean to suggest that you hated the song; it's just the populace on this site seems to dislike it. I agree that East is a musical stretch for Prince. Actually the whole of N.E.W.S. is a radical shift for him. And while 77 may be "generic" sounding to you, to me it is a bit of a stretch, particularly in the guitar style he presents, which is not really anything he had put forth on a recorded piece before.

no no no no no .. diversity? really?

no

its because most of prince records are garbage .. same style as his good songs .. just not good songs ...

if a song is good it does not matter what style it is .. i love all of prince styles as long as it is fucking great music ..

prince music has turned to pure shit .. thats why people rag on it ..
