I can't say I've never really "understood" "Purple Rain" either...I've recently thought that it was like a cleansing of forgiveness? Like bathing in the Purple Rain would wash away the sins? Help me on that one too!

"Hello" is pretty much an accurate account of what happened with Prince after he passed on the "We Are The World" recording. He passed on the recording and got ambushed in his limo(with J.Jones) by fotogs and his bodyguards got physical with the fotogs and in the end he got bad press for the whole deal. "I was sitting pretty with a beautiful friend , a man tries 2 get in the car...", "U call them bodyguards but I call 'em my friends...", "I hate cameras by nature..."

Also references the offering of "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" instead of singing on "We Are The World".

He goes on to point out about hunger at home in the USA and that they(Prince and The Revolution) do care about it all.

"Dolphin" was basically telling Warner Brothers that if Prince died and came back as a dolphin would they still tell him how to handle business. "how 2 swim..."

The Holy River is about baptism - washing away your sins and your past (ie, being redeemed).

He talks about the pain, loneliness and emptiness that some of his past decisions have brought. He comes to an epiphany that he had lost his focus on the One who brings all that is good - God. So he goes to the Holy River to be baptized (washing away his original sin). At this point, he can commit to a better life – with the woman he loves. In so doing, he finds joy.

It's pretty simple, really.

Forget being American, it's all about perspective Genesia. Violent room could have also meant just a hectic life in general. The bath could mean him cleansing his mind and soul of all the stress. I was just never positive about it. And yes I'm American but nor did I have Symbolism 101. Thank you for your take.

When Genesia referred to "taking English" she meant English class not English lessons. In English class you learn about metaphors, similes, etc. I would assume that each nation teaches their youth about their own language and how to interpret phrases and such.

Music and lyrics are so subjective that if you are not in his head, how would you be able to interpret what another person is thinking, writing or implying? Unless he pulled you to the side and said, 'Hey, this is what I'm saying in this record." We are all "figuring it out" but do you think disrespect and lack of common courtesy necessary?

I took English classes in high school, undergrad and grad school; did we cover EVERY metaphor, simile, and symbol? No. That’s what makes music so amazing, you can take it and fix it to mean whatever you need it to mean in any phase of your life.

I thought this forum was for fans joining together to discuss the works of an amazing artist, not to bash, ridicule and belittle one another. I guess not.

I did have intentions of asking questions about a few lyrics I was pondering, but I think I'll keep my questions to myself. I because don't tolerate nudeness, disrespect or offensive language, so my best bet would be to keep my fingers quite.
