Let me be the first to say:

Ecstasy.

Although, I don't believe it.

I just wanted to be the first to say it.

Only the cover. It's not as dark as it's mystique makes it out to be aside from Bob George but thats kinda in a comical tone. Come is far more moody and depressing.

The album sounded "blacker" and more sinister because most of us heard it on a fourth generation cassette tape in our brother-in-law's car -it sounded forbidden (remember this was 1988)

I still maintain that the whole episode was a publicity stunt.

The content is very dark, it's an album of anger and vicious sex.

And also let's not forget that it was a reaction to some critics accusing Prince of not being black (as in "negro") anymore, recording too much pop material, and Prince wanted to show he still had the funk in him, so I think the title really had a double meaning: dark and afro-american.

Except that happened after the album was finished.

and there was still nothing 'black' about the music in general. It was still Prince music, I don't know. It obviously wasn't an issue because the next album was hardly anything that would fall into a "Black" catagory

.

It's sad when artists of any genre feel that have to play along with some sociel/political bs

The Black Album lacks the pop songs that were in the previous albums, though: everything on is pure R&B. The critic was ridiculous in the first place, though, because despite the pop songs PR, ATWIAD, Parade and SOTT also were full of terrific funk songs, so in the end these suckers just considered cross-over to be "white". Shame on them!

As for an artist playing along... It's sad indeed but believe me, and this is first hand experience, sometimes when you are younger (Prince was only 29) and you hear several people criticizing you on some specific things you produce or don't produce you're like "I can do it the way they want, I didn't chose to so far but if I want to I can and I'm gonna blow their mind!". I did it several times when I was younger so I can't blame Prince, it's a way of proving oneself and the world that one can do just everything lol

Yeah I understand, but by 1987 with his back catalogue that shouldn't be an issue, he knows what he's done and can do...

.

And he started out on the premises of not being catagorized as a 'black artist' or doing 'black music' Prince did everything, just like on that Black album.

.

It's hard for me not to see Cindy C & ROck Hard in A Funky Place as not 'pop' in the veins of Prince music, nothing was directly commercial friendly

.

black people LOVED Purple Rain, the small minority that took issue with him like they owned him is generally just that, a minority of people.

.

I also think though that a frustration on what was happening with him by then had a bit to do with his 'black' feelings the change of tide fame personal relationships.

Its funny because all of the black friends that I have that like Prince hate this album and the white friends I have love this cd(even the ones that dont like Prince like a few songs on it). Im not sure that makes it very black but I do find it interesting. The black friends I have like everything up through Sign o the times and then its spotty after that. The Black album is pretty close to the bottom and I have had this conversation many times. Its pretty interesting indeed. It seems more like The Black album for the white guys who want a "black" experience at least in their own eyes. lol. Its pretty white indeed!!

being a "white guy" who was 18 when my best friend bought this as a boot at a record store, I had a mixed reaction to this album when i heard it. it sounded funky, but i couldn't really tell as the boot was pretty horrible. years later, when it became available to buy, i picked it up. not so sure to this day how i feel about the album itself, but in retrospect, it seems to be the turning point in his career. watching his face as UFUCKING2 won the best album of the year grammy over SIGN OF THE TIMES, you could just see P giving up on needing to prove that he was the best on album. maybe im reading into it too much, but it did seem to be the moment where he said to himself "fuck it, ill just put out what i want to from now on, and if they get it, they get it." a few hits on radio besides, not much changed after that. there's still quite a few gems to collect here and there(even being an old fart fan, i still get pumped at some of his recent output) tho, and i'm happy he is still trying to hang in there and put out some good shit from time to time. wink
