Name A Song Where Prince Is NOT The Victim

I tend to see a lot of dislike for Princes newer releases and I think a big portion of it is because Prince isnt being honest or vulnerable anymore. Aint Gonna Miss U is an example of Prince being the victim. With his track record its hard to believe he doesnt have more records where he is apologizing

Can you name some tracks where Prince is apologizing or saying hes sorry? Ill start with the obvious.....

I never would've thought that this would happen

But baby, pretty baby, we're gonna work it out, yeah
I love you, I love you, can't you see?

"I know living with me baby is sometimes hard" - Nothing Compares 2 U

But seriously - do you expect him (or ANY artist) to create a catalogue of songs about how bad a person he is?

Strange Relationship

I came and took your love, I took your body
I took what self-respect U ever had
I took U 4 a ride and baby, I'm sorry
The more U love me, sugar, the more it makes me mad

Prince used to always be the wronged party and
the women who wronged him were usually vixens
of a particularly one dimensional, whorish type.

Then prince grew up and started writing about
real women and more realistic relationships,
that were based on more than ducking and in
which the male and female would be more or less
equal.

Sadly in later years prince regressed back to
his older themes of women being either culprit
or overtly sexual.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

lol of course not. This is more so an appreciation thread for those songs that Prince is more vulnerable. In particular, the songs where he says sorry or expresses regret.

I appreciate when people are able to explain and have this kind of insight into Princes music and maturation. More opinions like this please. biggrin

I would say that's still a cop-out lyric as far as accepting fault goes. He's saying he didn't intend the pain with his actions, but that doesn't necessarily mean his actions were wrong in any way. I'm sure when the military dropped the A-bomb on Japan they would have preferred to avoid all the civilian casualties, but they felt it had to be done and couldn't be avoided.

I think admitting fault and accepting responsibility for something would go against his manufactured fantasy/entertainer/inspiration figure persona. He may have written songs and expressed such feelings in private, but I don't think that kind of thing fits with the Prince mythos and I can assure you that he's been very careful to remain consistant in his public character's life.

That's my guess, anyway.

When I read these lyrics I do percieve an acknowledgment of incompatibility/mistakes but not necessarily wrong-doing but not necesarily mistakes in the moral sense.

It does seem that way doesnt it? As if he is extremely careful and putting on a constant performance. Hes mastered the veil. Which is what made me want to ask every one to name songs that hes said sorry and taken off his mask. If Prince were more honest in his song writing these days he would probably get a more grateful reaction.

A Million Days bheart

eye didn't have the heart to say eye'm sorry

Now eye haven't got a heart at all

eye could tolerate the pain if eye could talk to my best friend

But you won't even call, won't even call...

This song really sounds like it's heartfelt sorrow. What I don't get is that if he was sorry, why he didn't he just call? The lyrics make the song, so I guess it could be that he liked the way the words rolled together and left it at that. But still, he's saying she won't even call. And from what I've gathered here and from other Prince fans, Prince values his privacy. Imo anyone, guy or girl, would really need to wait until Prince calls them. I've heard it said that some artists make their best music when their hearts are breaking or are in a bad relationship. My wish for Prince is that he finds his heart again.

In This Bed I Scream, comes close, especially since we know a lot of the story of their breakup

Not about 'romantic' situations, but friends and musicians

Definately a song of regret...and not a lot of hidden language,

it's pretty straight forward what he's talking about

that 1 line reminds me of what Lisa said, that when she realized she wouldn't

be coming back to Minniapolis, she broke down and cried too

.

2 these walls I talk
Tellin' 'em what I wasn't strong enough 2 say
2 these walls I talk
Tellin' 'em how I cried the day U went away
.
How did we ever lose communication?
How did we ever lose each other's sound?
Baby, if U wanna, we can fix the situation
Maybe we can stop the rain from coming down
.

In this bed I scream
Lonely nights I lay awake thinking of U
And if I'm cursed with a dream
A thousand times I feel whatever I've put U through

maybe he called and called but she wouldnt return his call. or maybe she wronged him but he was willing and able to forgive her, but she wouldnt give him the chance.

Nope, I strongly doubt. His fanbase are largely nostalgic whiners whom he can never fully please and today's music listeners are the most undiscerning EVER as it relates to lyrical content. So this is presumptuous and speculative at best. Current output isn't that bad IMO, but I don't think the masses GET or LIKE "spiritual" or "message oriented" Prince

^^ Exactly. It's easier to write a song after you'd been wronged, not after you've wronged somebody else. Also, easier to identify with and enjoy as a listener. I mean, how often do you really want to hear a song about what an a-hole somebody is/was? "Strange Relationship" is great because it's uptempo, but otherwise it's a hard sell. "Criminal" by Fiona Apple was good too, but again it's kinda too downbeat and dark to listen too often.

Actually, I do think a song about feeling ashamed and sorry about what one did, would be expressing the feelings of many. Life is not just a one dimension emotional journey.

Unfortunately, not many artist seem to be that scrupulous honest with themselves.

That's a shame, though.

Let me help you find your way. Im referring to Prince showing vulnerability in his songs. This is an appreciation thread for songs where Prince apologizes or shows remorse in his song writing. His most recent that I appreciated was "Breakdown" but he is not apologizing, just showing heart. A lot of fans have been complaining about his current song writing and the lack of innovation. My suggestion was that perhaps he would get a more grateful response from his fans if he showed more heart instead of writing silly lyrics about "rubber tatas" and lyrics that seem forced.
