Warm Up Gig w/the Red White & Blue band 9.23.1984

September 23. 1984
Bogart - Cincinnati, OH
Purple Rain Warm Up Gig

Sept. 23, 1984: “Prince had been to Bogart’s to see James Brown (in 1982), and obviously he patterned some of his dance routines after James. When he did his dress rehearsal date for the Purple Rain tour, which was in all the major venues, he did it at Bogart’s. They came in as the Red White and Blue Band. It was 5 bucks, and I guess the word got out that it was going to be Prince, because this thing was sold out in advance. I’ll never forget standing there next to these two young women. People just started cheering and it was a crescendo that kept building. There was a performer who was on stage, backlit, and one girl looks to the other girl and says, ‘Look at that guy, trying to be Prince.’ And the other girl looks at her and says, ‘That is Prince!’

Reminds me of a story someone told me once. This girl and her friend were at a club in Detroit after a Prince concert. It was sometime either around Halloween or on Halloween. They were sitting near the stage and a table, and some guy was standing next to them and talked to them for a minute. After he left, they were making fun of him for dressing up like Prince and how stupid he looked. A few minutes later, this guy was on stage because it was Prince! This was the early-mid 80s.

It still blows me away, not knocking anything now or recent, and I understand a lot of the cost reasons. But $200+ for a show today. this 9.23.1984 in the beginning of the height of his Superstardom... these people got 2 C Prince 4 $5.00

Wow....never heard about this gig before. I love when he used to pull these little gangster moves. Also, the pics are revealing an INTENSE amount of pancake makeup. He looks like a fucking geisha.

I'm sure the set was roughly the same as others in that era, but where the hell is footage of it? Cruel, cruel fate......

I like this:Similar try outs tentatively scheduled for Chicago & Detroit were canceled when plans leaked out prematurely.
