Why follow a "real musician" like Prince today... when.. his new music "sucks" (most of it) Isn't it a paradox, Prince is definately a real musician, like he says whan playing live in concerts..: "Real music by real musicians".. yes.. U can hear he is, live in concerts. Prince is truly gifted, no doubt. One of the greatest - ever. Prince 4Ever.

I've often wondered why since the 2000s Prince has surrounded himself with top musicians, however, rarely seems to utilise them or even his own skills in the studio. Looking back, I would of thought P would have been creating really concept/Zappa like stuff....the 90's really killed him. It brought Cheese-pop to the studio. Keenmeister

i think age is one of the reason for i know, he don't do music for his fans, he just make the music which he want.. he dont want to play sexy lyrics with the age change.. he's a jerk for being so selfish..n too bad, we helplessly fallen in love with this jerk.. he's just trying tooooo hard to get rid of all his female fans who crazily in love with him cuz of the sexyness, mmm but abt his new music, it's just different from our female fans expectation, don't think it sucks, i really loved his guitar solo with cee lo green, n loved the message in the fixurlifeup a prince news a day, keeps the doctor away

I actually liked alot of the mid-00's stuff... but honestly lately your right! Prince is boring, makes shit music, its like he's running in place with the same "lets remember my youth of sly in the family stone" kinda bullshit.
Sure the newest stuff is different, but where's the edge??
Religion & Larry Graham cut Prince's balls off. The guy has become a dated bore...
Basically every new song is 85% crap song with a guitar solo that saves it. ( by the way his solos arent amazing anymore either. He's to busy making a face, but there isnt anything to make a face about).
Kinda sad.

You follow Prince now to this day because you're hooked and too weak to simply let go and walk away. There's no big psychobabble reasoning behind it. It is what it is. You're not going anywhere. You'll be posting this same dreary crap in ten years and asking the same questions and challenging others to validate their fandom while clutching yours like it's a life preserver. Accept it and keep the "woe is me" threads to a minimum. [Edited 6/16/13 6:12am] When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

it sounds like you want prince to go back to what he used to be which was swearing and singing nasty songs again. he addressed this issue on mtv almost 10 years ago.

You tell us. You are the one saying his new music sucks, yet are posting at his fansite. Do you need others to validate your opinion? "New Power slide...."

Simply listen to one of his latest shows with 3rd Eye Girl for your answer. A real musician playing real music that is reworked, innovative and fresh. This is why. The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I remember reading an interview he gave in 2004 to Guitar Player magazine and the writer asked Prince, why he hires top notch-grade A musicians like John Blackwell, Renato Neto and Maceo Parker in your band and hardly use them for your studio recordings. Paraphrasing Prince answered: "If I bring John Blackwell to the studio, he will do things differently than how I envisioned it. I can't even play "When Doves Cry" the way I originally planned to. It's like Billy Wilder. The reason his films are so seamless is because he did everything himself".
I was really disappointed that Prince didn't utilize the ONA players more in the studio. That vibe of that band is so mature and sophisticated. Like andykeen said, Prince from 2001-2003 was making music that followed his own artistic impulses and eshewed commerciality. After the Musicology album (which I love) he made 3121, which is a better major label album than Rave, but that's not saying a lot.
I was very pleased with "Condensate by the Original 7ven and showed that the Minneapolis Sound can be made by using analog instruments (real bass and drums). 20TEN sounds so forced like he is dying to please fans that can't leave the '80s. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I completely agree with you! Prince is still good live but on record he has been boring for 90% of the time eversince the beginning of the nineties. I am not even looking for real music by real musicians perse, i love well produced electronic music just as much. Problem with Prince is that he doesnt come with interesting ideas anymore, just rehashing his older music in less interesting ways. And where is the songwriting? Where is the adventure? Where are the innovative production skills? Where are the well written lyrics? They have all gone. It is really too bad he has become so lifeless and dull/lazy. He needs a giant kick under the butt, he needs to ditch his megalomaniac ego and humble himself to REALLY work together with some good musicians/producers who can help him develop new interesting ways of producing new music. Not that that is ever going to happen of course... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

There's a lot of people who would think tracks on Parade, SOTT, and Lovesexy are total weak shit compared to 1999 and Purple Rain.

thedance said: Ok, all opinions are welcome. [Edited 6/16/13 8:24am] I still enjoy the music output and the shows, both arenas and small gigs. So I don't see the paradox. You don't enjoy it but still follow it. That's a paradox to me. I used to be a huge Billy Idol fan back in the eighties. Now I'm not. Still love the old stuff but couldn't tell you what he's done since the early nineties. I moved on but still will jam to Rebel Yell or White Wedding when I hear them. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Not being sarcastic, but maybe you need a new stereo? Listening to tracks on a computer or ipod, smartphone, or whatever the latest gadget is distorts the music...
I enjoy Prince's output of today and yes, it may be somewhat different than what's past, but truly its all good.
Thicke's latest song that went to #1 -- is catchy but --- really? no disrespect to Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell but the lyrics are trivial and the sound....that's NOT music...so beauty is in the 3rdEye of the beholder.

I would say it went downhill after Emancipation. The only really great album's after Emancipation is The Rainbow Children and Lotusflow3r. Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth and 20ten are pretty boring with only a few good songs on each album.Yes hes much better live and he should release more live albums Welcome 2 The Dawn

I agree.. He lacks new original ideas, and stuff.. Tho I like Musicology album, but the rest of his work are total utter bulshit.. I can't stand it

I think many of you ask things of other people that you probably can't do yourself. That is, to be perfect and innovative forever. I believe his body of work is still amazing to listen to. Yes, he may not create songs like he used to like the past, but he's been in the game since he was 19. He's now 55. He has nothing to prove anymore and you will not find any artist who puts out a perfect album all the time for their entire career. there will always hits and misses. I'm just realistic.
You say you want your idol back? its not really prince's job to fill that void you have in your life. why not try to break away from Prince world and check out new artists, especially ones signed by independent labels.

I actually agree with Thedance on most of P's recent music, but if there's one thing I learned on this site, it's that for every P song someone hates, there's someone who loves it. We just disagree while back in the 1980s all fans were still excited. I'm still interested & I'm still on this site because I want to stay informed (imagine hearing about a P concert in your town too late!) and I'll give my opinion about what I hear. But I'm not going to make it a personal problem when I don't like something. [Edited 6/16/13 13:11pm]

Because being a musician isn't what it takes, if by being a musician we just mean "can play instruments with some proficiency." Top notch musicians, without something good to play, can only do so much.
I don't agree that he's completely dropped off, but what's missing is not his playing--it's the musical ideas that matter. And I'm not sure if that's not just a matter of his running out. He's put more down than most, maybe it's just not there anymore--at least not the earth-shaking stuff.
Or maybe he just doesn't listen to enough stuff. He always worked at combining and juxtaposing from different things--if he's not listening (and he routinely brags that he doesn't) than he's stuck with the same stuff to build from. [Edited 6/16/13 16:07pm]

They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.
