http://www.hornheads.com/

The Hornheads, an extraordinarily talented group of horn players, has been gathering international acclaim from artists and critics alike, since 1991.

On tour with Prince and the New Power Generation from 1991-1994, the Hornheads performed for over 2 million concert goers in twenty countries. Q Magazine, London, described them as “a peerless horn section...playing in bare brilliant syncopation, punching with a staccato precision beyond the grasp of science or Synclavier. Prince splashes their insouciant versatility all over the set list.”

11.19.1999 Channel 4, UK

Dave Jensen is a member of Hornheads, a Billboard magazine award-winning a capella jazz group. As a group, they have released three solo albums. They have also recorded eight concept albums for Target. As a horn section, they have recorded for artists in the US, Japan, Argentina, Denmark, Portugal, and the UK. From 1991 through 2001, the Hornheads recorded nine albums with Prince and the New Power Generation. This includes three Gold, and two Platinum albums with international sales of more than twenty million. During this time, they toured and performed with Prince throughout the world. Before Prince, Dave spent three years on tour with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. This included the PBS special “Ballroom Dancing” with Bobby Short and Juliet Prouse. His trumpet and flugelhorn can also be heard on the recordings of Chaka Khan,”Come to my house”; Larry Graham, “GCS 2000”; Mandy Moore, “Coverage”; Mavis Staples, “The Voice”; Phil Upchurch, “Love is Strange”; Tevin Campbell, “Get Ready”; Pedro Abrunhosa, “Tempo”; Carmen Electra, “Carmen Electra”; Ricky Peterson, “A Tear Can Tell”; Ben Sidran, Bruce Henry, Prudence Johnson, Debbie Duncan, Lucia Newell, Connie Evingson, Dave Graf, George Avaloz, Klezmerica, Pete Whitman’s X-Tet, The Steeles, The JazzMN Big Band, and others. Dave works as a musician for Broadway shows. He has also performed Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite” with the Minnesota Orchestra. Performances with touring artists have included Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Billy Eckstine, Natalie Cole, Rosemary Clooney and many others. Dave is on the faculty of McNally Smith College of Music. He graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music.

Can I Play With U? -Red Riding Hood

Can I Play With U? is an unreleased song recorded on 26 December, 1985 (the same day as A Couple Of Miles, two days before Slaughterhouse, U Just Can't Stop, Run Amok, Mobile, Madrid, Breathless, High Calonic and 12 Keys) at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with saxophone overdubs by Eric Leeds on 27 December, 1985. The track was sent to Miles Davis (in both instrumental and vocal versions) in January, 1986, following a request from Warner Bros. for Prince to contribute to Davis' first Warner Bros. album (called The Perfect Way at the time, before being renamed Tutu).

The tracks were accompanied by a note from Prince, reading: "Miles, even though we have never met, I can tell just from listening to your music that you and I are so exactly alike that I know whatever you play would be what I'd do. So if this tape is of any use to you, please go ahead and play whatever you feel over it. Because I trust what you hear and play."

Miles Davis added trumpet to the song on 1 March, 1986 at Capitol Recording Studio, Los Angeles CA, USA. Prince contributed additional material to the track to extend it in 1986, but neither Davis nor Prince were very excited by the final result, and after hearing the rest of the finished album, Prince asked that his track be removed, as it didn't fit in with the style of the rest of the album.

No!
(Prince)
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Saw U standin' over by the wall
Lookin' like U havin' no fun at all
If U want me and U have The Ball
Just give me your number baby, I'll give U a call

Hey baby, can I talk 2 U?
Can I walk with U?
Can I stay with U?
Can I play with U 2night?
No!
Lord, I wanna play with U
No!
Can I play with U?

I noticed that U were not havin' fun
Maybe it's because U ain't talkin' 2 anyone
Just give me a sign, pretty mama, and I'll be your number one
U and I creep 2 my house and then we'll take off everything

Hey baby, can I talk 2 U?
Can I walk with U?
Can I stay with U?
Can I play with U 2night?
No! Shh....
Can I play with U, mama?
Pretty mama
No! No!

I can tell U never really understood
The difference between bad and good
I can turn U out girl, U know I could
Let me talk, let me talk, let me talk, can I talk 2 U?
Oww!
I wanna play with U
Lemme talk, lemme talk, lemme talk 2 U, mama

Oww!

Can I Play With U?

Recorded in late December 1985 for Miles Davis for possible inclusion on his Tutu album, Miles and his keyboard player, Adam Holzman, added their parts to the tune, but when Prince heard the other material, he did not think his number fit and pulled it. The lyrics has Prince's speeded up vocals making advances on a girl, while the song is highlighted by Eric Leeds' funky sax riff and Prince's frenzied guitar playing.

Date Studio Additional info
19 November, 1986 Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA Initial tracking
Recording Personnel

Initial tracking took place on 19 November, 1986 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA as Adore (Until The End Of Time) (three days before recording Play In The Sunshine and the studio overdubs for It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night). The track was initially placed (using this original title) as the seventh and final track on the third disc of the aborted 1986 album Crystal Ball, and was kept as the seventh and final track on the second disc as the album developed into Sign O' The Times.

Until the end of time I'll be there for you You own my heart and mind I truly adore you
If God one day struck me blind Your beauty I'd still see Love's too weak to define Just what you mean to me
From the first moment I saw you Ooh, I knew you where the one That night, I had to call you I was rappin' till the sun came up
Tellin' you just how fine you look In a word, you were sex All of my cool attitude you took My body was next
You made love to me Like you were afraid Was you afraid of me? Was I the first? Was I your every fantasy?
That's why, until the end of time I'll be there for you You own my heart and mind I truly adore you

'Adore', one of my fav Prince songs. I wanted 2 type this at the bottom, but 4 some reason, it wasn't happening. Yea, deep song. Wonder if he had some1 specific n mind when he wrote it? With lyrics like that, I would think so. hmmm

I guess Atlanta Bliss was there according to an interview with Eric

http://www.sarahbacon.com.../nite5.htm

One of Eric's greatest memories was meeting Miles Davis. Miles came to Paisley Park for a New Year's eve benefit show in 1988. He got up on stage with Prince. Eric and Atlanta Bliss, the other horn player at the time were in awe. Miles is their hero, their influence, their jazz god. So they're watching Miles solo and pinching themselves because they can't believe what they're experiencing. Well, Prince has these hand signals that he give to the band - if he holds up his fist, they 'turnaround', i.e. play what I guess you would call a quick bridge and then resume the song they're on. Another is he'll hold up however many fingers and the band will punch it as many times. If he holds up 3 fingers, then it's "Boom, boom, boom" and then on with the song. Anyway, the entire band was awestruck by Miles so when Prince held up his fist for the change - everyone ignored him. Prince was like "Whoops, that didn't work!". Eric said that was one of his funniest memories because everyone was in the zone and completely ignored Prince's command. The nicest thing Prince ever did for Eric? When Miles was in town, he was having dinner with Prince at his house. Eric left Paisley for the day and had been home for about 45 minutes when Prince called. "Why don't you come over for dinner?" So Eric had dinner with Miles Davis, his hero (and Prince and Sheila E.).

TLM: On New Year’s Eve 1987, you finally got to play on the same stage as Miles, during a Prince benefit event at Paisley Park studios.
.
Eric Leeds: I always regret one moment. There was just one moment when I wanted to nudge the trumpet player Matt [Blistan, aka Atlanta Bliss] to go into a melody line in "Agharta" and the moment came and went by so quickly that I wasn’t able to grab it. I always regretted that because I really wanted to see the look on Miles’s face! The whole affair lasted for all of five minutes but it was cool.
