No problem I've always like Atlanta, I know people always focus on Eric, but that Bliss trumpet... When it came to Prince's dealings with Miles Davis, especially the dinner party 1986, I'm surprised he didn't invite Atlanta... would have been a good experience for someone in is band...

The Hornheads, an extraordinarily talented group of horn players, has been gathering international acclaim from artists and critics alike, since 1991. On tour with Prince and the New Power Generation from 1991-1994, the Hornheads performed for over 2 million concert goers in twenty countries. Q Magazine, London, described them as “a peerless horn section...playing in bare brilliant syncopation, punching with a staccato precision beyond the grasp of science or Synclavier. Prince splashes their insouciant versatility all over the set list.”

Can I Play With U? -Red Riding Hood
Can I Play With U? is an unreleased song recorded on 26 December, 1985 (the same day as A Couple Of Miles, two days before Slaughterhouse, U Just Can't Stop, Run Amok, Mobile, Madrid, Breathless, High Calonic and 12 Keys) at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, with saxophone overdubs by Eric Leeds on 27 December, 1985. The track was sent to Miles Davis (in both instrumental and vocal versions) in January, 1986, following a request from Warner Bros. for Prince to contribute to Davis' first Warner Bros. album (called The Perfect Way at the time, before being renamed Tutu).
The tracks were accompanied by a note from Prince, reading: "Miles, even though we have never met, I can tell just from listening to your music that you and I are so exactly alike that I know whatever you play would be what I'd do. So if this tape is of any use to you, please go ahead and play whatever you feel over it. Because I trust what you hear and play."
Miles Davis added trumpet to the song on 1 March, 1986 at Capitol Recording Studio, Los Angeles CA, USA. Prince contributed additional material to the track to extend it in 1986, but neither Davis nor Prince were very excited by the final result, and after hearing the rest of the finished album, Prince asked that his track be removed, as it didn't fit in with the style of the rest of the album.
No!

I guess Atlanta Bliss was there according to an interview with Eric
http://www.sarahbacon.com.../nite5.htm
One of Eric's greatest memories was meeting Miles Davis. Miles came to Paisley Park for a New Year's eve benefit show in 1988. He got up on stage with Prince. Eric and Atlanta Bliss, the other horn player at the time were in awe. Miles is their hero, their influence, their jazz god. So they're watching Miles solo and pinching themselves because they can't believe what they're experiencing. Well, Prince has these hand signals that he give to the band - if he holds up his fist, they 'turnaround', i.e. play what I guess you would call a quick bridge and then resume the song they're on. Another is he'll hold up however many fingers and the band will punch it as many times. If he holds up 3 fingers, then it's "Boom, boom, boom" and then on with the song. Anyway, the entire band was awestruck by Miles so when Prince held up his fist for the change - everyone ignored him. Prince was like "Whoops, that didn't work!". Eric said that was one of his funniest memories because everyone was in the zone and completely ignored Prince's command. The nicest thing Prince ever did for Eric? When Miles was in town, he was having dinner with Prince at his house. Eric left Paisley for the day and had been home for about 45 minutes when Prince called. "Why don't you come over for dinner?" So Eric had dinner with Miles Davis, his hero (and Prince and Sheila E.). | |
