Noon Rendezvous - favorite Prince version

Which Prince version of Noon Rendezvous is your favorite? I only know of two: the rehearsal from 1984 and the birthday show on June 7, 1984. Are there any others?

_

My favorite is the rehearsal. The vocal is beautiful, and the whole thing just builds superbly.

I love that song. But my favorite is the live version from Sheila E.

Interesting. Both the rehearsal and the birthday show have the "sitting in..." line, so just curious why you like the birthday one better. Is it the sound quality?

Sound quality sure, but it also is a better performance.

In my not-so-humble opinion, of course...

I love both versions but I prefer the rehearsal version and listen to it more often. I find it interesting that the live rendition and the rehearsal version of this song sound a bit different.

I also prefer the rehearsal version. Strangely enough, I'm so used to listening 2 it on the wrong speed (half a note lower because of the source tape it was on) that I've never even bothered to adjust it when listening.

So the version on the "Neon Rendezvous" bootleg is slowed down?

Prince & the Revolution @ 1st Ave 6.7.1984 Birthday Show

0.Shortberry Strawcake (Drumming prep)
1.17days
2.Our Destiny
3.All Day All Night
4.Free
5.Noon Rendezvous
6.Erotic City
7.When Doves City
8.Happy Birthday
9.Irresistible Bitch
10.Possessed

A totally different sound, the sparse linn/drum work of Bobby Z and electric guitar solo. Not better just different. Both versions have passionate feel. Lisa Colemans plush playing, the combined guitar cords of Wendy Lisa and the smooth bass of BrownMark. Love the club sounds in the background. This version sounds like the build of an ocean wave

hahaaaaa

This next song is dedicated to that little girl over there

I've been wondering what 2 wear
I love our noon rendezvous
I know U tell me U missed me
And I long 2 make love 2 U
.
Your words, they intoxicate me
I shiver each time that U speak
How much more can I endure, my love?
The sound of your voice makes me weak
.
If my bodily functions operate
This way when U just call my name
I'd hate 2 see when we are finally
Playing that nasty love game
.
Your words, they intoxicate me
I shiver each time U speak
How much more how much more can I endure, my love?
The sound of your voice makes me weak
Guitars & drums

(don't know what they are saying) .....my baby
You'll keep sing
(Prince softly rips into a guitar solo)

Not sure. I got it on a tape someone recorded 4 me about 20 years ago.

Now you've got me curious about the speed. The rehearsal version that I have is from the Neon Rendevzous bootleg which I downloaded in the early 2000s. So I don't know the original source, other than just some kind person in that file sharing community whose name I've since forgotten (was it the purple hub?)

I figured out what I like about the rehearsal. His vocal sounds really uplifting, which I think is because he stays in a major key. In the Birthday Show and on Sheila E.'s versions, the vocal dips into a minor key on lines like "your words, they intoxicate me." The uplifting melody of the rehearsal just does it for me.

I will say that the guitar solos in the latter half of the birthday show version are killer, just fantastic. If I could paste those onto the rehearsal version and create a 20 minute version of the whole thing ... vowla, perfection!

It's on a boot called Neon Rendezvous. Note the spelling of "neon" instead of "noon". I'm not sure what boot label put it out. The rehearsal is for the birthday show, so there some overlap in the setlists.

I like the rehearsal best. His vocals on the birthday show sound giggly - too much vibrato.

I think it appears on more than one boot. One version I had was around 13 minutes, and I later found one that had 19 minutes. Same rehearsal, the longer version was just cut short on this particular release.

Mine is a rehearsal and has a running time of 14:26. It skips/repeats at 49 seconds in for 3 seconds.

Is this the 19 min version which has been edited?

Birthday Show for me.

Could not find the rehearsal on my server, but a quick search found what I was after wink

What I like about the Birthday Show is I can picture Sheila E sitting there and Prince singing it to her as if she was the only person in the room - he is singing it with feeling.

Now if Sheila had just got up and sang on the next song it would of been HOT !! cool

Going back and listening to recordings of The Revolution it makes me think of how perfect they all "fitted" together - musically, vocally (though not brilliant singers they all gel - light and shade, bright and dark).

I some times wonder how much more successful Prince would of been with The Revolution still behind him - but thats for another thread.

I better get this track off repeat and go to the gym...... OK one more listen wink

The boot that you really need is titled "Noon Rendezvous" and is on the FBG label. This is the most complete circulating version of this particular rehearsal and includes the 18-19 min version of NR, other releases fade it out at around the 13-14 min mark. Other versions of this rehearsal are inferior in sound (imo) and quantity including the already mentioned "Neon Rendezvous" release.

The FBG version also includes various band chat in betwen tracks, which if I remember is also missing from other versions.

I still have the old CD bootlegs of that rehearsal, they were released by different labels ( I own two and one of them does not even HAVE a proper label, not even a made-up name lol ) and you are right, they are heavily edited compared to the FBG release. When I had nothing but the CDs back in the day I was so used to listening to the bootleg CD that the edits didn´t really bother me but now that I have the comparison I must admit that the FBG version is much, much better than those old CD bootlegs, even soundwise, as you said.

The CD releases also omitted a part of Erotic City, the part where he plays a snippet of All the Critics Love U in New York.

I always wondered why he said "All the Critics!" right in the middle of Erotic City. Years later I realized that that part was missing, but you could still hear him announce it to the band , but not play it.

^ I don't know, it would mean pulling out the old recordings and listening, and I simply can't be arsed. I don't recall any skips but then it is about 100 years since I last listened to the old ones.

Get the FBG version, it's all you need. wink

??= Vocal on right can be heard in addition to Lisa, though at a low level - makes sence it is Wendy not Brown Mark as I first thought - hard to make it out.

?= Vocal on Left in addition to Lisa could be Brown Mark??.

Now if I can get the Birthday show off repeat I will go listen to the rehearsal again smile
