What Was Your First Prince Album? I remember my dad being a member of the Columbia House Music Club. Every month he bought tapes and with each purchase there was some credit toward a free tape. Well, one month he let me get an tape since it was free(I was 10 at the time), and I chose "Pirple Rain", mostly because all my friends had this in frequent rotation at the time. My mother had him listen to the whole thing to make sure there wasn't anything too inappropriate for me. Dad was cool and said it was ok. I listened to that tape over and over again until it was so bad the sound was muffling. I'm glad i didn't choose "1999" as my first album because I don't think dad would have been THAT cool about it. What was everyone's first P album? Any memories from it?

1999 - after which I went promptly to the record store and bought the four albums before that, and had a full-on Prince orgy. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

First one I bought with my own money was Parade, aboot a month after it came out, up to that point I had been listening to my sisters Prince collection. My mates hated Prince, but I didn't give two shits. I thought he was the bollocks.

1999.
It's as amazing now as it was then. This record never fails to surprise me. Every time I listen to it, I hear another layer of sound or some little quirk I never noticed before. For instance, it took me years to notice that the woman's voice in "Automatic" was answering all of Prince's questions from a measure or two earlier. There's all sorts of subliminal, dark and creepy shit in "All the Critics Love You" but on first listen, it sounds like a pretty generic linn drum riff.
Put headphones on, smoke a bowl and listen to this album from start to finish sometime. You'll hear things you never knew were there.
After I heard this album and saw "Little Red Corvette" on MTV, I gobbled up everything the guy had.
Yeah, that^^^^. [Edited 5/9/13 13:01pm]

Decided to get into Prince about 7 years ago and bought Dirty Mind (since I had read it was first 'essential' album), and 1999.I didn't dislike them, but didn't get hooked for some reason. (In fact, I think I only listened to the first 3 songs on 1999, all of which I was already familiar with since they were hits).A year or so ago, I guess I wanted to try and get into Prince again, and bought SOTT (which I already knew was considered one of his best albums). For whatever reason I guess I was "ready" for Prince at that point, because now I have all his studio albums. Not sure how I didn't get hooked 7 years ago with Dirty Mind. I could literally listen to that album every day and probably never get sick of it.

Sign O' The Times.
My mom had brought home a bag with 1999, Purple Rain and one other in it, (she worked in the mall, and no one had claimed it after a month), but I wasn't interested. Once SOTT came out, I fell in love with his music, and went back to listen to the others.

There's some pretty good memories here so far, and some "it" moments when his music clicked with us. Was anyone into his protege albums early on or did you not gt into them until later? I was only hip to The Time, but then it was only for "Jungle Love" and "The Bird". Anybody get into the "6" bands or The Family right away?

My first Prince album was Purple Rain way back then when it came out but these first Prince moments are blurred with the strong positive effect that Around the World in a Day had on me.
I wasn't into his side projects, but I like what he did with Andy Allo. [Edited 5/9/13 16:31pm] ...every night another symphony...

So fortunate to have taken the journey with Prince from the very beginning.
Too bad it had to end (4 me).
I miss the glory days, but I'm happy I was there to witness so many historic moments.
and I had the book cover!

Prince was in heavy rotation in my neighborhood, even in my aunts' and uncles' cribs, but Drity Mind was the album that made me purple.

ok, the very first "Prince Album", That I purchased or got, received, or stole , (IMO, means a 12 inch vinyl LP),
was "Dirty Mind"........
However, I did have and still have all the 45 releases from the previous "For You, (soft and wet) & Prince (naked on a unicorn?), " i feel 4 u", I wanna be your lover, & all that b-side greatness in between all the albums
so I guess the answer is..whatever you interpret this to be.......
yeah....... [Edited 5/9/13 19:33pm]

[Edited 5/9/13 16:41pm] I saw that photo for the first time in the Ultimate collection. What's the "book cover" mean in this context? "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Sign o the Times, 1987 in the summer Some kids at soccer camp were singing "Tell me who in the house know bout the quake? We do. I'm really, really. If you know how to rock say 'yeah', yeah. If you know how to party say 'oh yeah', oh yeah!" And they were singing it over and over. I asked them what song that was? They told me. I bought the tape. And I was hooked. I bought or dubbed (can't remember which) Lovesexy and then got a vinyl copy of 1999. But I didn't become obsessed until about 5 years later. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Lovesexy. It was a big hype in Holland at the time. I tried very hard to stay awake watching the Dortmund concert on tv (it was aired in the middle of the night) but I did decide the time was right to buy the LP. I was hooked! No turning back any more. I wanted the rest too and could get the other LPs cheaply because the late 80s was the time when CDs were all the rage so stores wanted to get rid of vinyl. I think it was Sign O The Times for me too.
I was aware of Prince UK-wise from about 1984/1985 onwards but not really fully "getting" him until was about 15 and heard Kiss.
Then SOTT hit at age 16, just as I was starting to properly appreciate pop music. I was like "whoah!" this guy is amazing. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

A cassette of "1999" in 1983. I was 10 years old. In 1984 I got the "Purple Rain" album and weeks later I picked up "For You", "Prince", "Dirty Mind", and "Controversy" all at one time at Wee Three Records. I'll never forget that day. After that I bought an album and cassette on release day of everything after that until 1995 or so. I believe I was lucky enough to discover Prince at the peak of his creativity.
