I know Stevie loves her too. His radio station spins her music on a regular basis. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

That was just a little guitar riff added 2 that Stevie song. This new song with Janelle is a collab effort that he let her control.. Totally different effort & outcome.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! From what I've read, Stevie was working on the track and he asked P to lay something down on it. They jammed a bit and Prince ended up playing rhythm guitar and bass on the track. Either way, he was still produced by Stevie. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

No! He was a session musician 4 Stevie.Prince just added what he saw fit for the track..If anything Prince arranged the guitar rhythm himself.Produced means. Example! Stevie produced a whole track 4 Prince. That wasn't the case here. Stevie produced himself. Prince just contributed. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! So Monae is more your cup of tea. But why do you have to negate Klyph's opinion? Reasons for it were given, Klyph's heightened expectations based on related artists Klyph likes that Monae apparently didn't fulfill, Klyph's clearly stated feelings in response to Monae's performance style. But the conclusion isn't the same as yours, so "JUST NO"?
Monae's fans on this site (not just you) seem to want reasons for someone's musical preferences, but when people try to explain not liking Monae, they don't accept it. It just seems wrong to me. Sometimes people have "reasons" for the music they like, but most of the time people just like or don't like things, and reasons are something you construct later. Much of it really comes down to intangibles and ineffables--you either feel an artist or you don't. Should people who don't feel her just be quiet?
I still haven't listened to Janelle Monae. I realize that some people really like her, but some of her fans probably are not doing her any favors here. When I finally do listen, I don't think I want to post my opinion here. Because I know whatever it is will be difficult to explain, and I'd hate to have someone else tell me why they think I don't like her. They'll probably be wrong.
Based on my reading on Prince.org (and elsewhere, too): When I do listen, I'll go in assuming she is authentic, can sing, and is creative--not exactly rare traits, really. I'll also go in assuming that she is a strong black woman who thinks outside the box--admirable. I'll know that she's been endorsed by many prominent musical figures, some of whom I enjoy and others of whom I merely respect for their contributions to music whether I particularly care for them or not. I'll also know she's been endorsed by many orgers, some of whom routinely say interesting things about music and whose opinions I respect. I'll also know other orgers about whom I feel similarly will have not endorsed Monae. I'll also be aware that she's an attractive woman who some people seem to think is somewhat controversial in her style of dress and image. And I'll also know that there seems to be some difference of opinion about whether she's a compelling performer on stage.
And not a single bit of that should matter when it comes to whether I like the music. I know of a lot of artists who seem like interesting personalities, admirable, strong, independent, possessed of their own artistic vision. Others seem personally uninteresting, without any clear vision.
But when it comes to the actual music, my reactions don't always match up to my view of the artist as a person. Nor should they, in my opinion. There are great people who make sucky music, and great musicians who suck as people. And--and here's the kicker--great artists whose art I just don't care for and hacks whose work I love.
Now, someone might be able to point out things about an artist's work that help me move toward a different appreciation for it, and I might change over time so that my responses to an artist's work evolve and I learn to like something I didn't. But if someone told me "JUST NO" concerning my honest reaction to an artist's work, it would be unlikely to do anything but make it harder for me to hear the artist in question. And if you really believe Monae deserves to be heard, why discourage people by dismissing the opinions of those who have listened and considered her work?
But when it comes to the actual music, my reactions don't always match up. Someone might be able to point out things about the music that I've missed, and I might change in various ways over time so that my reaction to the music changes. But saying to me "JUST NO" will certainly not cause an overwhelming transformation in my perspective. It's far more likely to strengthen any negative feelings I have.

The remix is unnecessary and to me it's as boring as the original version.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
tell that to Prince anyway is not like it's an official release...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
anyway I love the original a lot more..it's better structured with the first part, the breakdown phase with erykah and in the end that magnificent rap

The remix is disappointing. Who would've thought Prince would be the one to take the funk out of the song ? It became very bland. Hope other collaboration efforts turn out better.

exactly janelle's original is way more funky...but let's see the positive side janelle didn't partecipate in this remix it was a remix made in paisley probably to stream some songs for the 3rdeyegirl tv .. [Edited 6/26/13 17:23pm] [Edited 6/27/13 2:43am]

Y'all are warped, I'm sorry, but the remix is funky, expectations are obviously spoiling good music for people.

Well Hannah just posted on FB that her husband did the remix not Prince. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I suspected that it came generally from the paisley camp with Prince approval on it..thanks for the info...let's wait for the real featuring between Prince and Janelle on the album [Edited 6/27/13 2:40am]

True...Joshua did the remix...Janelle likes it and nothing leaves Paisley Park without Prince his approval... .

of course Prince approved it...nothing see the light without his approval..

Whoever did it I still stand by what I said, it lost it's funky attitude and it's just bland, especially because local DJs in my town have been making way better remixes with this jam. Sorry I'm honestly weirded out, knowing 1. this wouldn't have gotten the love it did from the fans if it didn't have P's name on it, and 2. Janelle and Prince are usually the ones who love preaching about real artist, real music, real musician, real attitude, and real whatever else. They're all about keeping it real. So much for that when they follow the exact same tactic as what labels like Sony is notorious for.

A fan put it out there as a "Prince remix" because it aired on 3rd Eye TV. Hannah/Josh posted the truth about it after it was taken off Soundcloud. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

So should I blame that fan for all these articles caliing this remix 'P remix'? Or is it P and Janelle's people who dont give a damn when they should

All we got we the track off the livestream with no credits or statement about who did what on the track. A fan ripped it and uploaded it onto Soundcloud and promoted it as such. Mind you it went up yesterday afternoon and was gone by the evening so I think someone addressed it. Then the posts from Hannah and Josh went up. Ooh...you better stop expressing your honest opinion and making sense on this site. They will come for you. Can ya handle it? Can ya handle it?
I feel the same way though. It's like they're a bunch of young wolves in sheep clothing. The fans are their prey.
