Joni Micthell = Prince...he attended one of my concerts in Minnesota. I remember seeing him sitting in the front row when he was very young. He must have been about 15. Hmm. I think some of the biographies mention him doing it already in high school. It's possible he didn't start doing it for his song titles and lyrics until later (maybe WB told him not to?).

But, absolutely practically spoken, when and where should who have seen him use those letters and numbers? Certainly not in school-related stuff, I imagine, the teachers would have told him to cut that shit out pretty soon. And I doubt he was showing his personal letters to Joni Mitchell around in school before he sent them.

People scribble all kinds of things in their own notebooks. I know I did.

In the DMSR book is related that it's Britt Husney ( Owen's wife ) who made Prince discover Joni Mitchell during the pre For You sessions.
