Prince 1983-1993-2003

In an all out musical "battle" who would win?

I thought this was going to be a thread about the 3 years that Prince failed to release a new album (2003 remaining to be seen).

But think about it, Purple rain album was actually made in 83'. artist work hard usually 6 months to a year before they release an album, so he did work hard during 83', everyone says that he took a break in 83', 93', 03'.

But at the same time he had records come out in every other year on the calender. So when was he doing this work?

But as we know it's not like he was taking breaks from recording; he just didn't happen to release something that year.

Prince circa 1993 was really the pits with all that Gangster posturing, what with Tony M on the loose and that Goldnigga NPG album it really was bad. At the time i hated it too. Is there anyone out there who actually enjoyed this period or will admit enjoying this period?

"bits & pieces" of the "93 era" (that year itself) are alright, but fortunately, things did improve with The Gold Experience & Emancipation..

1993 was when I put Prince on the back burner for a while -- I was getting into Radiohead (debuted in '93) and also concentrating on "grunge", which was still in full-force.

I got back into Prince full-time in 1996 with Emancipation.

I think what Prince is doing now is more exciting and interesting than what he was doing in 83. Not to say that i necessarily like it better, or less, just that it is pretty experimental. Just like on controversy, 1999 and dirty mind Prince is once again blending styles and creating something new, only this time he has the courage to add a strong religious tone to it without fear of what the masses would think. It is a brave time in Prince's career, imho!

I admit as far as concerning Act II, the rappers were gone, the concerts were fantastic!
Goldnigga has some good songs which Prince had better used for himself.
The name change itself wasn't a problem alone in 1993, it took years to convince ppl about the reasons

If you are talking about from a pure, musical standpoint, I'd have to say 2003. He has mostly improved over the course of his career as far as his musicality and performance goes.

If you are talking about from a commercial, studio and songwriting standpoint, I'd say 1983. His creativity that year- he was surely on fire.

Having said that, I'd probably rather listen to Rainbow Children these days than Purple Rain.

1993 doesn't even come close in turns of musicality and performance...but he was doing some amazing and different things in the studio that year (all of the Come/Gold/Exodus era stuff saw its beginnings in '93).

I'm not going to call an almost year and half old piece of elevator music a Prince release.
